“Incredible!”
Reviewed 10 November 2013

I couldn't believe how large this cathedral is. It's really about six different churches in one building. Our tour was excellent; the guide was well informed and took her time to explain everything clearly. Unfortunately, you can't take pictures there, but there's lots to see. The gold, silver and woodwork on the altars can't be imagined. There is also beautiful art work (don't miss the painting of the last supper with guinea pig served as the main course).

“Touring the Cusco Cathedral”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

Built on the site of the Coricancha or Temple of the Sun is the Cusco Cathedral of Santo Domingo. It is located in the Plaza Mayor of Cusco. Among the buildings surrounding the square are the Cusco Cathedral (Catholic), and the Church of the Society of Jesus (Jesuit).

Photography is prohibited inside the catedral. However, an interesting item inside the cathedral is a painting by Marcos Zapata of the Last Supper where a roasted guinea pig (cuy) is in front of the image of Jesus and other dishes typical of Peruvian food. Guinea pigs are a favorite delicacy in Peru.

In the main altar covered with silver plates is an image of the Assumption Madonna to which the cathedral is dedicated to. There are two smaller churches adjoining the Cathedral: the Church of Triumph and the Churce of the Holy Family. Rivaling the Cathedral is the Jesuit Church of the Holy Spirit. These churches and places of worship are worth a visit when one is in Cusco.
