“Nice charming place to stay in the center of Cusco”
Reviewed 25 February 2014

The hotel is perfectly situated in the center of Cusco. The hotel is a well maintained old Spanish Residence, you can breath the past while walking through the building. The personal is very friendly, and was always willing to help me with questions I had. I was amazed how the building looks like the buildings I encounter in my hometown in Cantabria, North of Spain. Rooms are pretty basic but comfortable. Every basic thing you wish for while staying in Cusco is present. You can reach lot's of restaurants, bars, disco's, etc. at walking distance. Breakfast could use a little more variation but the quality of the food is ok. I also want to thank Elizabeth Castro Vargas for making a visit to the little internal Chapel possible. That was a nice surprise for me.

Room Tip: I had a room on the back side, not the street side. Quiet and clean.

In a city of fabulous old buildings, this hotel, in an old monastery, certainly played its part. Based right in the middle of the old section of town, you walk from the street through reception into a courtyard. There is another courtyard further on, set out with tables and all the rooms are based around these courtyards in the traditional way. The doors were either thick, ornately carved wood, or in some cases for communal rooms, glass with a stencilled crest cut to fit the original stone arches. There were a few rooms which looked as if they were still in active monastic use.
If you are looking for a room with character, this hotel has many. But check them out first – some have several joining rooms, even spanning two floors, while others are quite small. Ours was on the small side (for this hotel) and some nice lighting illuminated a kind of vaulted roof. Just as well, as the only windows were a tiny square cut into one of the ornate doors and an equally tiny sky-light.
The furniture was very old, solid and wooden and the floorboards creaked like hell. Full of character! Bathroom was OK with a good gushing shower.
Breakfast was reasonable – the usual range of cereal, toast, rolls, fruit, eggs, fried vegetables, served in a cosy but dark dining room.
The staff were friendly and very helpful with all our needs, and there was fresh water and hot drinks available all the time.
For a place which is well-run, central and full of character, this is one of a kind and I would gladly go back.

I spent a few days here in 1994 when there was a good staff but unfortunately no water - either hot or cold. Glad to say it has much improved and now has excellent staff and water from both taps. Great central location, wonderful hotel structure, courtyards & carvings. Rooms are basic and you can occasionally hear a pin drop in the hotel - but this is not a Marriot (thank god) and who spends much time in ancient creaking bedrooms anyway especially when you have to get up at 4.30am for your Machu Picchu trip with your "packed breakfast" box (actually just a thin ham sandwich but you will use the calories). And did I mention the free mate de coca tea to help your altitude attitude. You should value this place for it's eccentricities if nothing else. Really enjoyed it again.

Room Tip: upstairs with balcony

This hotel is charming & full of character. Yes, the floorboards squeak, its super noisy (street traffic as well as guests in other rooms), you have to use an oil heater in the room, and the old doors leave gaps BUT the rooms were spacious, bed was comfortable (extra pillow & blanket are in the cupboard), shower water was hot & staff was friendly. Buffet breakfast was nice- you get eggs cooked to order, a selection of fruit, yoghurt, bread for toasting, strong coffee, etc. the location was fantastic- within walking distance to everything. Check out chicha restaurant just around the corner, down the hill... If you need a late night meal, we enjoyed the quinoa soup on the room service menu. The laundry service was reasonably priced & the staff were super helpful & friendly. We were upgraded to a deluxe suite on the 2nd part of our stay but the only difference was that the deluxe had a bath tub. Also, the deluxe room didn't have a skylight which was such a relief!!! The wifi doesn't work well in the bedrooms. The signal is in the courtyard so we sat outside our room (there are couches) & were able to FaceTime there.

Hotel Marqueses is a national icon. Truely a museum masquerading as a hotel so yes, some rooms have squeaky floors and warped doors from 200 years of use, but we found our rooms (3 different rooms in the old courtyard area over a 2 week period) to be a privileged study in artisan craftsmanship from a long past era.

Friendly and engaging staff always available to ensure the complimentary urns of mate coca tea and coffee are full (remember Cusco is 11,500 ft high). Excellent location between two major plaza's and walking distance to all attractions. WiFi was spotty depending where you are in the courtyard rooms, but always available in the PC lobby. Recommend upgrading to a Superior room (courtyard) for a modern bathroom and old world charm.

Strong positive recommendation - great price and location, plus heritage legacy.

Room Tip: If you stay on a Friday or Saturday night, avoid left side courtyard rooms as next door building is...

Pros

Friendly Staff
wi-fi in courtyard only
Storage while treking
Nice breakfast
Tea available all day
Comfortable beds
Good Location

Cons

Soundproofing very poor , travelled as part of a trek group sharing rooms with people I did not know very well, ensuite had no soundproofing, en-suites seem to have been an afterthough ; poorly constructed at a later stage ?

There was also no sound proofing between floors

Overall though would recommend is you are not to sensitive to the lack of soundproofing !!!!!!

This hotel is charming and centrally located in Cusco. The staff is friendly and helpful. There is bag storage if you are headed off on a trek. Hot breakfast every morning with eggs cooked to order is always a plus with us when we travel. The room is nice, but nothing super special. The pillows left a little to be desired, and a blackout curtain would have been nice for our room. Also, the bathroom had nowhere to place anything. An etagere or shelf would have been nice to have. Great hot shower as well as a hair dryer. Also reasonably priced..
