“Great style, friendly and helpful staff”
Reviewed 12 July 2014 via mobile

Stayed for a couple of nights while visiting friends in Cusco.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and completely fine for 3 people. It also felt very good value (from a Brit perspective at least!) The colonial architecture and decor made the general experience very worthwhile and feel pretty special, with paintings and architecture very stylishly flavouring the atmosphere. Breakfast was a good mix of eggs cooked as chosen, cereal, fruit, yoghurt, fresh bread.

I'm surprised by the number of positive reviews this hotel has. There are so many options in Cusco that the price and location do not make up for the cons of this hotel at all. I would never recommend this place to anyone I know going to Cusco, and especially not for anyone returning from the Inca Trail.

Positives:
-The morning front desk staff girls, Marco the porter, and the breakfast staff are all incredible. They really deserve a better functioning hotel. We were able to check in early after an overnight bus (ugh!) from Arequipa, and just continually received great service from all of them during our 4 nights at the hotel
-The room we had was huge so if space is your top priority then you might like that
-The hallways and courtyard area are very very charming (but ALL of Cusco is!)

Negatives:
-The room is huge, but it's musty smelling and I felt a lot of the space was useless
-We weren't given a matrimonial room we requested on booking
-There is only a plug-in heater to warm the room, and you can only use it if you aren't also trying to watch TV, or charge an electronic as the outlets could only handle one thing at once
-There is only wifi in the courtyard or in the dingy/uncomfortable lobby rooms and even then there were numerous times it wasn't working
-The hot water was okay...until we returned from the Inca Trail and wanted it most, then it was non-existent
-The bathroom is poorly designed with no counter space
-The walls are paper thin. I was able to hear the word-for-word conversations of the couple next door discussing the wife's cold shower and how the husband was currently enjoying a warm-ish shower and wondered if she wanted to join
-There was some incessant hammering noise going on in the hotel until around 10pm on a few nights. Not a big deal normally, but when you're leaving every morning for excursions at 5am, 10pm is brutal!
-We were told (more than once) that breakfast starts at 5am. On the morning we left for the Inca Trail we were expecting to eat at 5 (pick up was at 5:30) but there was no one there until 5:20
-They ruined our laundry and made us go through a huge ordeal to get some reimbursement

I really do not recommend this hotel for those trekking the Inca Trail (or other treks to Machu Picchu), especially for your return stay. You return from the Inca Trail late (it was about 9:30pm, had been awake since 3:30am), and all you want to do is have a good shower, tell loved ones you made it, and go to sleep. With no hot water at all, terrible wifi and paper thin walls it was just an awful place to come back to.

We stayed in this hotel for several days before and for the Inti Raymi festival. The hotel has preserved the historic feel and décor. This does not impact the comfort. Our room was spacious. It was on the second floor and we opted for the room with the window (and a balcony). This meant it was overlooking the street. Some people companied about the noise but we did not find it to be much of a problem. We were in Cusco during the peak of the festival and there was indeed a lot of people on the streets late into the night and the music from the main square was loud but I do not think our room was more loud than the rest of the hotel, or the city center. This also means that the hotel has a really nice location very close to the main square and other points of interest. Lots of good cafes nearby, one was just down the road.
The courtyard was an excellent place to sit and sip the coca tea while waiting to adopt to the altitude. Breakfast were quite what we needed (eggs, ham, cheese, fruits, yogurt, cereals) and the lady serving the breakfast was very nice. So was the rest of the stuff. The hotel rate included the transfer from and to the airport which was very convenient.

We stayed here before and after we left for the Inca Trail. The hotel has an interesting history and the rooms are all unique and sumptuous. I could easily imagine that I was staying in an old Spanish mansion. The staff really went out of their way to help several times. Loved the breakfast, conveniently available beginning at 5 am.

Room Tip: Ask for a deluxe room! They are in the front of the hotel and each one is unique.

I would highly recommend this hotel if you are hiking the Inka Trail. Most guests are doing just that which means very early wake ups for trek bus meetup and people arriving late at night after their hikes. A lot of early morning and late night noise. The floors are very squeaky. We were downstairs initially and ended up moving upstairs. The breakfast is very nice, espresso every morning (yay) and coca tea all day long. The staff is very friendly. Our airport pickup was ready and waiting when we arrived in Cuzco. Location is great, walk everywhere.

Room Tip: Upstairs to avoid squeaky floor syndrome

The rooms are clean but don't have windows-often skylights (so take an eye mask as it can wake you early!) Breakfast was delish with fruit, cereal, toast, choice of eggs etc. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Location is great- just 5minutes walk from the main squares.

We stayed at this hotel two times. Lovely hotel with a great location at a good price. Staff were extremely helpful on a number of occasions. Unique rooms. Breakfast was good and started very early. 24-7 coffee/water/coca tea.
