“Brilliant, but be well-prepared!”
Reviewed 31 May 2013

Brilliant hike (one of world's best) as long as...

- You choose a great guide. You will spend 5-6 days with this guy so choose someone who's safe, knowledgeable, and kind to his staff (which was not the case with our guide, Umberto, from Pachamama Adventure)
- You deal with a great agency. We went with Pachamama Adventure... Cheap but cheap. Old inadequate rental equipment, great staff, poor driver, awful guide... Be demanding: you are paying good money here and put yourself under a lot of hardship: be sure you go through this with the right people, even if it means paying a little extra.
- You bring GREAT WARM gear. As soon as the sun sets, it gets scarily frigid. Some people in our group were borderline panicking at the thought of going to sleep at night: it's almost a challenge, and it's high (4,500m).

Otherwise, brilliant scenery, most VARIED landscape I have seen in ages, with glacial lakes, alpine dunes (yes!), snow caps, glaciers, marches, man-made irrigation systems, old Peruvian farms melting in the landscape, beautiful people, vibrant fauna: one of the world's undiscovered gems! We saw NO ONE on the tracks: the place is immense and well under-visited.

GO! But be well-prepared!

“Great high altitude trek for the hearty hiker”
Reviewed 5 April 2013

I've hiked through this region twice (7 and 9 day treks) and am awed by the stark high mountainscapes, the amazing colors of the soils and waters, and rugged glaciers. The elevation changes were not difficult, just the altitude caused deep breathing to get oxygen. At night it was very cold, so bring your warmest jacket and sleeping bag.

“Breathtaking landscapes, fascinating experience”
Reviewed 15 March 2013

The 5-day Ausangate trek has been one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. Walking amongst snow-capped giant mountains and incredibly turquoise lagoons, feeling the crisp air on your face is unforgettable. I went there with ANDEXPLORA, a very reliable Cusco agency.
