After doing a four day trek to Machu Picchu, the Amaru Hostal was total luxury. The rooms were great. Showers were hot. The hostal staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was handy and nice. The location was perfect for seeing the city. The views from the hostal were great too.

We stayed two nights before heading up the Sacred Valley. Desk staff were very helpful and were able to answer all of our questions and we were very happy with their recommendations and travel suggestions. Wifi is best in the public areas, but is available in closer rooms to the front of the hotel. The rooms in the back are quieter and a few have seating outside next to the room doors. We stayed on the top floor in the back and were happy with our room. I suggest asking to see two or three rooms before choosing one, if that is possible. Each room has a different layout and the one our friends were in, had a full flight of stairs to the bathroom. Fine for most, but not for anyone with limitations. Recommend asking for a room in back- 2nd or 3rd level- when you make a reservation. As a side note, Amaru II is also very good- not quite as convenient location but still close to everything and newer. If Amaru I is booked, try there. We stayed there when we returned to Cusco for three more nights because Amaru I was booked.

This place has it all: value, location, charm, yummy breakfast, cleanliness and an awesome staff.

They helped us with dinner recommendations, held our bags while we trekked, and helped with airport transport.

Highly recommended.

Charming, cozy hotel on one of the most beautiful streets in the city, close to Plaza de Armas. Beautiful views of the city from our room and from the cozy balcony seating areas around the courtyard. I suspect it could be noisy if your room is right by the road (the drivers seem to pay no attention to the 'no honking' signs posted everywhere), but we were not bothered. Coca tea on tap is much appreciated when you arrive, and it seems they have oxygen should you need it. The steaming hot showers were also appreciated after a long hike or on a cold night. We would definitely stay here again if back in the area.

Room Tip: Light sleepers may want a room away from the street or facing the inner courtyard.

I'm not sure how, but I think we got the best room in the house: Room 215, at the top corner of the back courtyard. Windows along two walls with stunning views over the red tile rooftops of Cusco and the hills beyond. A comfortable "matrimonial" with an additional single, lovely hardwood floors, and a clean tiled bathroom with a strong hot shower! The walls could perhaps use a fresh coat of paint, but there's really nothing to complain about here! Good breakfasts in the morning and friendly helpful service at the front desk.

Amaru is generally a quiet place but does get some neighbourhood noise: nothing extreme and nothing light sleepers can't remedy with a set of ear plugs (which if you're like me are a traveller's best friend anyhow). Ask for a room in the back courtyard. The gardens are lovely and home to a resident hummingbird (linger a little and you'll see him). Great location in San Blas about three or four blocks from the main plaza and conveniently just around the corner from delicious Jack's Cafe! It was a pleasure to stay and relax here on our last four nights in Peru.

Amaru Hostel is a very nice property located within easy walking distance of many of Cusco's main attractions. The hostel and its grounds are immaculately clean and well cared for. The rooms are comfortable and have ensuite bathrooms. It's more of a nice hotel than a hostel. Staff is accommodating. As others have noted, wifi is best near the lobby; the included breakfast is very good. I'd stay there again should I ever find myself in Cusco.

Although we stayed at Amaru Hostal for one night only, we were impressive by its garden and services from the staff. It is really unexpected to have a small balcony with chairs outside each room. The garden and yard are planted with colourful flowers which make the hostal becomes cozy and lively. The stafff at the reception are helpful. I have to send our special thanks to Jose Lovon who was very helpful on providing information of Macchu Picchu and train tickets. Jose was friendly and could speak in good English. What a pity that we did not take a photo with him. The hostal is very closed to the main square and there are a lot of shops and restaurants around the hostal. The restaurant for breakfast is also nice. I recommend this hostal to anyone who need cozy hostal in Cusco.
