Amaru Hostal is a nice hostal about 5 min. from the central plaza. The rooms are clean and the gardens and views over the city are very nice. The breakfast is above average. However, the service and friendliness of the front desk staff were very unsatisfactory. The tours offered by the hostal are overpriced. Late at night there was not enough warm water though.

We had stayed in a different Cusco hotel and were disappointed, so when we went to the Sacred Valley, the B&B owner there booked Amaru for us & we were very happy with it.

It is 5 minutes walk from the main square, up a hill towards San Blas. You can blink and miss the entrance but once you get in and meet the friendly staff, you will be happy that you found the place.

Our room had two levels, a queen bed & large bathroom downstairs, another single bed upstairs with skylight.

The bathroom was amazing, the ceilings must have been 15 feet high, with skylight & even natural stone on part of the wall. Very interesting bathroom !

There was a nice view from outside our door overlooking the rooftops of Cusco. Also a nice public balcony with chairs to relax.

Breakfast was good with eggs/fruit/juice/coffee.

Very happy with this nice hotel. Would recommend it.

Very nice stay. Comfortable beds and rooms. Pretty loud with barking dogs in the streets but worth it to stay. Breakfast was really good and even has eggs and fruit salad (most just have bread). All in all I would recommend it to others. Be sure to get the price settled before you go as they seemed confused about what to charge. Ask for a deal before you arrive. It´s close to the plaza and some rooms have great views of the city.

A friend and I stayed at the Amaru in August, a few days before we did the Inca Trail, and then a few days after we got back.

Overall I would have to say it was perfect. Not a 5 star resort by any means, but for $40 a night for the 2 of us, it had very friendly staff, clean rooms, lots of hot water, quiet garden areas to relax in, and a great location in the best part of town. All that and less than a 5 minute walk to the main square.

Our room was on the second floor and was great. It had a double bed on the main level and stairs up to a loft area with a single bed. Great views of the city, and a bit more privacy for each of us.

Free breakfasts were very good, though once we found Jacks Cafe a block away, it was hard to say no to their incredible pancakes and great coffees.

Overall I would not hesitate to recommend the Amaru Hostal.

As a family, we recently spent a week in Cusco, staying at Amaru Hostal. The facilities were terrific, and the staff helped organise additional activities, including accommodation in Aguas Calientes and Puno, bus tickets, and an individualised trip for 5 people to locations in the Sacred Valley. Nothing was too much trouble, the breakfasts were fantastic (including coca tea to help with altitude), and the quality of the bedlinen was appreciated. We will certainly return again, finding Amaru to be our favourite location in a 3 week South American trip.
