“Pretty, friendly, sparkling clean, great value for the price”
Reviewed 11 May 2008

Pretty, friendly, sparkling clean, and a great value for the price, the Pension Alemana is on a quiet street near the Plaza San Blas, just uphill (or a $1 cab ride) from the Plaza de Armas. We were greeted with a cup of mate de coca and pointers for minimizing the effects of altitude sickness, which proved very useful. (Oxygen is reportedly available if the mate de coca and coca leaves don't suffice.) The rooms were full of charm, and we succeeded in getting room 12, actually a suite, with the best views. The staff were wonderful. The pension works with a wonderful cab driver who handled airport transportation and also drove us to & from Ollantaytambo. The Plaza San Blas neighborhood is full of artisan shops and restaurants. We would definitely return here.

In a beautiful neighborhood with narrow, hilly, cobblestone street and colorful gardens, the views of the city from some of Pension Alemana's rooms are fabulous. It's low-key, very quiet, clean, and cozy. Each room is different. We had one with a separate bedroom on the top floor. It had a mini-kitchen that wasn't functional and a decent sitting area. View from the bedroom was really nice. Breakfast was good and you could get hot eggs too for no extra charge. We left our luggage here for three days while we went to Machu Picchu and they took good care of it. Free Internet upstairs. This was the cheapest place we stayed in Peru and one of the nicest. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Really, the only down side is it's quite a walk to the Plaza de Armes, all downhill..............which obviously means all uphill on the way home.

  • Liked — Ambiance
  • Disliked — All the stairs - but how do you get such great views without working a little??

Booked 4 double rooms for 3 nights prior and 1 night after our Inca trail hike. Our flight was 3 hours delayed, so they didn't pick us up but covered the return back to the airport instead, which was fair. It was 30 soles FYI for a minivan for the 8 of us.

Since it's on a very narrow street, the minivan made us walk a block, which was ok, though the altitude was certainly playing a part.

It's $50 per night per double.

We had 2 rooms in the main building, which is nice because it's right by the internet computer (free for 15 minutes) and breakfast, but can be a bit loud if people are up early or from street noise. Some of the rooms in the adjacent building were similar, but the upper floor ones had amazing views of the Cusco city and valley below. Seems a little quiter than the main building since it's set back a little bit. Has a large well maintained garden and patio.

Breakfast was simple but good. Bread, toast, yougurt with fresh fruit and granola, fresh squeezed OJ, fresh fruit, eggs (scrambled or fried). They will prep it as early as you need and until 8:30.

Coffee water and tea are available for free at any time.

Great value and would recommend it.

Nine of us stayed at the Pension Alemana in Cusco in March 2008 and we loved it. We were given a warm welcome by Katy including some coca tea. We were then shown to our clean, comfortable, and charming rooms. I had contacted them via email and everything was as promised. The rooms in the "new building" are a little nicer and quieter. The courtyard and common spaces were delightful. Our rooms included a "safe" which was a locked drawer so it was easy to store our valuables. Internet access was free. Breakfast often included eggs made to order and real, brewed coffee!

It was a bit of a hike back up from the main square, but the cafes of San Blas were close by and it was easy to go out and get something to eat without going too far. The only other downside is that when we got picked up or dropped off from the hotel we often had to meet the vehicle several blocks downhill as many of the larger busses did not want to come up to the hotel on the narrow streets. This would only be a problem though for someone who could not walk very well. Otherwise, any relatively fit folks would find this hotel a delight.

  • Liked — The rooms and the common spaces were lovely & breakfast was delicious
  • Disliked — It was up the hill - but that made for great views!

My husband and I stayed at the Pension Alemana and we loved it. The hotel is perched on a hill in the San Blas neighborhood and we could see all the rooftops of Cusco from our hotel room window. Our room was spacious and comfortable. We actually had two twin beds which was fine for us because all of the "marriage beds" we had at other hotels were just doubles and a little cramped for the two of us. We had hot water and great water pressure in the room. The senora of the hotel served up a great breakfast with bread, jam, cheese, fruit juice, coffee and scrambled eggs. At one point my husband had a fever (we think from something he ate in Aguas Calientes) and the senora made him some tea to help. So nice! And the hotel also has the most beautiful garden with lots of gorgeous flowers. We would definitely stay there again.

We found Hostal Pension Alemana through the internet and read other reviews on the place. We requested room #11 as suggested, but it was taken. Nonetheless, we were happy they had availability since it was Cusco Week leading up to Inti Raymi. For a matrimonial (double) room with private toilet and shower, it's supposed to be $45/nt. They gave it to us for $40/nt instead because they said it was smaller than their other matrimonial rooms.

There was airport pickup, which is great when arriving at the Cusco airport. (And for us, we had just arrived in Peru via Lima, so it was long day already.) Upon arrival at the B&B, coca tea was provided and Kati sat down with us to go over our plans. Since we arrived in Lima with minimal reservations and plans, she assisted us beyond on our expectations. She told us where to go for tickets to Machu Picchu, Inti Raymi, etc. They even assisted us with finding accommodation in Machu Pichu Pueblo (aka Aguas Calientes) and when we returned to Cusco. Since they were full on our return to Cusco, they found us another place (Hostal Madre Tierra) to stay that was fabulous! Throughout our stay, they called for taxis, arranged for a private tour to the Sacred Valley, a greeting note when we arrived and chocolates on the bed. The shower knob did fall off, but we were able to put it back on and the toilet did leak but we were able to fix that too. It gets cold in Cusco, so a heater is provided along with warm blankets that will definitely keep you warm. There are hair dryers available if you ask and cheaper rooms along the front of the hostal. Our room was in the back so it was quieter. Unfortunately, we never noticed the lounging room mentioned. Breakfast is provided, even very early for those flying out or taking the early train out. (Breakfast is fresh bread, cheese, eggs your way, muesli, and fresh fruit.)

Fruit and tea are available all day long and you can take it to your room. The staff there are exceptional and very pleasant. It's German-Swiss owned and located in the artist quarter of San Blas. There is luggage storage available and the front door is always locked. There is someone at the front to answer it 24 hours/day.

Overall, we were quite pleased with our stay at Hostal Pension Alemana.

Our experience was first-rate at this pension which included a large, clean room (No 1), with a nice view, truly wonderful staff and reasonable rates. We would like to mention Senoras Catia, Lucha and Cristina who were helpful in going beyond what we normally would expect to make our stay pleasant. The hotel desk too provided excellent help, proving itself flexible in finding accommodations for us as our plans changed. And to boot - the food was very good..
