“Nice hotel...off the beaten path”
Reviewed 29 April 2010

This hotel is only good for those people who don't mind walking 20 minutes or taking a cab to the center of town..The hotel itself is nice, but the location is in the middle of a neighborhood that closes up at night. We never felt unsafe, it's just a hike if you want to come and go into Cusco. Breakfast was fair...rooms were nothing special..bathroom was lovely

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights prior to traveling to Machu Picchu. Then we returned back for another 2 nights. The hotel is not in the center. Its 20 min walk to the main square or a 5 min taxi ride (4sol, less then 2$).
The rooms are OK in size, clean and comfortable. Good cable TV with English channels. Big clean bathroom which might only need a new layer of paint on the ceiling. Overall, the room is good for the price and the 4 nights there were a good deal.
The service in the hotel is amazing. As soon as you arrive, they give you coco tea which is available 24h in the lobby bar. They change money for you. They call taxi and do anything to please you. Very friendly.
I would definitely recommend this hotel for the price. I don't see a need to overpay to stay in the center when you can walk 20 min or spend 2$ on taxi. The hotel is clean and new. The area is safe to walk, but looks a bit dark as the hotel is surrounded by auto-shops.

Nice and helpful staff. Pretty hotel, clean, breakfast was extremely good, everything was very fresh and well presented.
It's a good 20 minutes walk from the main plaza, we did it just once. Every evening we were so tired from our trips that we didn't try to even take a taxi, just go to bed.
I have to agree that beds were quite hard and the street wasn't pretty. Other than that, we were pleased with this hotel.

This hotel is a ways from the main city square, requiring a nice little hike back and forth each day, sometimes several times. We did not mind as the city felt quite safe and one must keep exercising to adjust to altitude. Little bit down-at-the-heels neighborhood but great + cheap little eateries and shops close by that are patronized by locals. Walking distance to two local craft markets, where we picked up some wonderful art and reasonable costume jewelry. Nice complementary breakfast spread every morning on the top floor which had nice views of this ancient city set in a bowl. Dinner was also served in a small restaurant space but we didn't eat there. We did gather there afterhours for conversation and wine and had the space to ourselves. Rooms were tidy but walls a bit thin and hot water not always guaranteed. Still, a very reasonable and pleasant place to stay if you are in Cusco for adventure and experience, not luxury.

Although the Mabey was a little further from the center of town than I would have liked, it was still within walking distance. Plus, a cab was only 3 sols - that's about one dollar. It had plenty of hot water and a decent breakfast, plus free internet. It was also very close to the artist's market.

I loved this hotel. The rooms were comfortable with a TV and everything. Everything was great except the bathrooms. The shower was broken it was late at night so I couldn't take a shower. The hotel offers free internet access in a lounge where you can get coca tea. The 6th floor had free breakfast or free snacks anytime which I liked. Great place!

Nice little hotel with an OK staff, but in a semi industrial area that seemed a little scary at night. After a certain time, they close a metal overhead door and cover the glass front doors. You have to be able to recognize the side door if you come in late.

Beds were hard, but the room was clean. If you're used to American luxury hotels, this will seem sparse--with a plug in space heater and little TV.

It's only about a $1 taxi ride to the main Plaza de Armas, so if you're after economy, it might work for you.

  • Liked — Free internet access. Free matte de coca bar to help with the altitude. Pretty good breakfast
  • Disliked — bed was too hard
