“Great location and service!”

Hotel staff picked us up at the airport, fast service to the hotel and easy check-in. First night a triple room on the fourth floor, no elevator. Next three nights in a double on first floor. (Change because a fourth friend met up.)
The triple were ok, last floor, high up and away from the traffic, more silent than the double on first which fased the front of the hotel. Both rooms were spacious and had great quiet aircon. Fridge in the rooms. A small supermarket behind the hotell, convinent.
Breakfast alright but nothing special, toast, scramled egg, freshly made juice, te-coffee.
When it was time to leave Iquitos hotel staff drove us back to the airport.

Given that Iquitos is pretty much the back of beyond (it is only reachable by air or boat, there is no road connection and saw its days of glory end over a century ago) one has to adjust one's expectations of hotels accordingly. The grading I have given takes this in to account. We stayed at the Marañon as part of a group before departing in to the rainforest. There is no obvious reason one would otherwise go to Iquitos. The hotel is very simple but clean and the staff are friendly and helpful (including happily lugging ginormous suitcases upstairs - there is no lift). I was scheduled to be collected from the airport but due to a misunderstanding the hotel thought I was arriving the next day. When I called they said they would send somebody along in 15 minutes to pick me up and (to my surprise) the guy arrived right on time. Breakfast is rudeimentary: coffee consists of hot water and small pots of nescafé on the table. There are two computers with free internet access in the reception area. I have no experience of other hotels in Iquitos but imagine that the Marañon is probably as good as it gets in the town, and certainly within the category in Iquitos.

We stayed here for around 8 nights whilst working with some missionaries in Iquitos. The location was convenient, very close to the water where there were little shops and places to get a drink. The plaza is just around the corner, which is lovely. The air conditioning was very welcomed. The rooms were small and tidy, with a window over the housetops. The shower worked well. We didn't go in the tiny pool, although it was very tempting. Breakfasts were nice enough, the toast was very dry and crunchy though! A wonderful fruit smoothie was served with it. We didn't have any problems, it wasn't a luxury palace but it was good enough for what we wanted. It didn't cost much, and there was nothing uncomfortable about it. It wasn't too touristy at all, but it wasn't scarily foreign. I loved my whole stay in Iquitos. The hotel didn't make the trip, but it certainly didn't make me like it any less!

We stayed at the Hotel Marañón for two, one-night stays before and after our Amazon River trip. Unfortunately, neither stay was without problems. Our tour operator had arranged with the hotel to provide our transportation from the airport to the hotel upon our arrival. They failed to get us. We needlessly spent an hour waiting at the airport and then arranged for our own transportation at additional cost to the tour operator.

Before checking out from our first stay, our tour operator re-verified our reservation for our stay upon return from the river. Upon arrival they claimed not to have a reservation at all. Upon further pressure from the local tour operator, they admitted their mistake; however, they were currently full and would not have a room until 19:00 hours when someone was due to check out! We eventually got a room, but not until nearly 20:00 having waited nearly four hours in the lobby. That is not what you want to do after an already long day of travel in the Amazonian heat. On top of the misplaced reservation, the desk clerk was unfriendly, bordering on rude, and made no effort to help us until the tour representative stepped in. To be fair, the hotel manager did lower the room rate from S/120.00 to S/100.00 as partial compensation.

The hotel is located just a couple of blocks off the Plaza de Armas and is convenient to the downtown sites, as well as the malecon. It also places you within walking distance of the Belen Market, a must see for any traveler to Iquitos.

The rooms are in fair maintenance condition and air conditioning is provided via independent room ventilators. We appreciated the cooling effects, and the white noise the units provided helped to buffer the street sounds. The room rates included a simple continental breakfast served in the attached restaurant.
