“Brilliant centre doing a fabulous job for manatees”
Reviewed 18 April 2013

You don't need long to visit this rescue centre, about an hour is long enough. A motor taxi costs s/10 to get there at 4.5km. It cost s/3 to get in and we were given some information by a man about the centre and manatees. We got to feed the babies banana and pet them - they are very cute and enjoy chewing your fingers! The centre is doing a great job at rescuing manatees and educating the public in the protection of these animals. Well worth a visit, much better than quistococha.

“wonderful resuce center :]”
Reviewed 26 February 2013

This is a real rescue center that helps rescue and rehabilitate baby manatees to bring them back to the wild. It was an amazing place to visit during my stay, and although the center is free to visit, I highly recommend donating to them because the employees and volunteers do a wonderful job to help these beautiful animals thrive, become healthy and feel strong enough to release back into the wild. The people who work here are knowledgeable, professional, and educate the local, communities, schools and children about their project.

Plan to stay only about an hour or so here. Not a huge rescue center, but stay long enough to talk to the employees, educate yourselves more about this wonderful project, and bottle feed milk to the baby manatees. Once you get face to face with them, it's easy to understand why this rescue center exists. Be part of the solution to saving and freeing the endangered animals of the world. This rescue center deserves the positive attention and support.

“Amazing RESCUE Center!!”
Reviewed 22 February 2013

This Place is an actual Rescue center that works to rehabilate and release Manatees back in the wild to preserve this endangered speices!

They are doing an amazing job, they do not charge to visit the center BUT please donate because they are soley non-profit and these programs in the Amazon need to be supported.

They go into local communities and teach about conservation, which in this part of the world is needed so critically. Education is key and already the children they have taught are reporting manatees that the center has rescued.

Amazing project, a MUST VISIT.

There are a lot of places you can visit in Iquitos to "interact" with animals. BE CAREFUL where you spend your money! You could be supporting the illegal animal industry, make SURE it is a REAL Rescue Center.

Tourism is a huge industry and where you decide to spend your money could decide if an animal lives or dies, and if a speices survives.

“Amazing Rescue Center in Iquitos”
Reviewed 7 February 2013

Visiting the Acobia DWAzoo Manatee Rescue Center was one of the highlights of my stay in the jungle. We took a motokar to the rescue center, which is about 25 minutes from the center of Iquitos. The motokar should cost 10 soles ($4) for 2 people.

A worker explained the project and why it's so important. Many manatee adults are killed for food and their babies are sold. People are not aware that manatees eat 80-100 kilos of food per day! He showed us the special milk replacer they give the babies. Manatees eat 12 hours a day, so tourists are allowed to feed them plants. We got lucky and were able to bottle feed 2 of the babies. It was such a special experience.

The manatee rescue center also has an amazing program where they are going into the local schools to teach about the project and the importance of saving manatees vs. killing them.

There are many tourist attractions in Iquitos that exploit animals and keep them in inhumane conditions. Acobia DWAzoo is legitimately helping the manatees and releasing them back into the wild. It is such a great place doing great work and I would not miss coming here if you're going to be in Iquitos. There is no admission fee so please leave a donation to help fund the project!
