Flying Dog Hostel Iquitos
Reviewed 12 October 2013

First time at a flying dog hostel... We stayed for 2 nights after our amazon trip, welcome was really friendly and all staff spoke english well. We had a private double room which was really big on the 2nd floor. Had our own bathroom which was clean. Fan provided in room which was great.
Didn't really spend much time in the communal areas but they were big and seemed good if you wanted to socialise. Went out for dinner and the receptionist gave us a little map of the area and told us where was good and where not to go, which was helpful.
Breakfast was ok: tea/coffee, toast with jam/butter and eggs which was better than the other hostels we've stayed in where breakfast was a let down.
Location is good, really close to the plaza and food places. We didn't really explore too much of Iquitos as we didn't have enough time but there are maps and info on the walls of the hostel of things you can do besides amazon trips.
Only downside is the room wasn't cleaned which didn't really bother us except some new towels and toilet roll would have been nice.
Overall good hostel, would stay again.

Hi, I was 2 different nights at that hostel. First one was awesome, second floor with fan and alone in one shares room. Second night was terrible, I was in first floor with loads of noise by reception and all common area. Receptionist is a bear, snoring so loud. I listened inclusive using earplugs.
The staff was very friendly and Marcel is a cool guy and take care of everything. This guy save this hostel.

I have now stayed in Flying Dog hostels in Arequipa, Lima and Iquitos. Loved the one in Arequipa, really didn't like the one in Lima (to the extent that very nearly didn't come here) and love this one. Huge open airy communal space, big kitchen, good dorms and private rooms. Stayed in a private double with bathroom (90soles) and a dorm bed in a 4 bed dorm (25 soles). Both had good beds. Bathrooms are clean and good (sometimes you get hot water!). The staff are absolutely excellent- friendly, helpful and efficient. Manages to be friendly with a party atmosphere without being a "party" hostel. They have been building a bar but it wasn't quite ready to open while I was here. Is on the waterfront but seems to have fewer mosquitoes than anywhere else in Iquitos.

We stayed at the Flying Dog in Iquitos before and after our 3-day tour in the Amazon. not only did they recommend a great tour group - Green Wild with the amazing tour guide Randy, but also were amazing when my boyfriend had a medical emergency on our tour. We got back to their hostel and they had a staff member assist us to the hospitals around town, translating and driving us everywhere. They were an amazing help during a very stressful time and without them we would have been completely powerless. Marcel and Wolfers are amazing warm people who from the moment we first arrived were very accommodating and helpful. We will be back again.

Arriving in Iquitos is quite interesting - it is like stepping into a slice of Bangkok, hot, humid and busy with tuk tuk's taking over the streets - and then cross this with a 3rd world version of Venice.

Flying Dog welcomes you in with big smiles, and a helpful attitude. We booked a private double room ensuite - we had a view looking out over the river, large room, great shower and an even more comfortable bed. After spending 7 days on a canoe going down the amazon, it was like arriving to a touch of paradise.

Breakfast was great - bread, eggs how you like it and fresh juice. The staff were always willing to help, and nothing was a bother to them.

One particular staff member - his name is Marcel - was just incredible! He took us shopping in the local food market, showing us around to later make some Ceviche - his special dish, and all this on his day off. We all ate Ceviche together for lunch and just had a great laugh.

We were able to get our laundry done with no hassle, handed-in in the morning and returned by the evening.

Only thing is the guy the recommend for the floating village - we were told one price and when he arrives you are giving a much larger price - we opted out. With the tours whether to the floating village, or serpentario or butterfly world rather just go yourself to the docks and bargain with the boat drivers ( just make sure you go to the right dock - there are many).

Would definitely recommend.

Having just stayed at The Flying Dog for a couple of nights before a trip into the jungle and a few nights after it´s got to be one of the friendliest hostels I´ve stayed in. All the staff go out of their way to make your stay the best it can be and always greet you with a smile and friendly conversation whatever time of day or night. I stayed in a dorm for 4 people both times (different rooms) and both were clean and enough space for 4 people and all our stuff. Lockers are available in each room (bring your own lock) and the showers were hot with a good amount of pressure! Breakfast is included (toast, butter, jam, eggs, great juice, tea, coffee) and the communal area with computer and TV is used by the guests and the staff alike, which is great to get to know the staff and even challange them to a game of table football. On our final morning we had to get up super early for the boat to Leticia and at 5am one of the staff gave us a wake up call and made sure we made our moto. Everyone speaks really good English as well, which is an added bonus. The only negative is that the internet is pretty slow, but that´s Iquitos in general and to be expected considering the location! Don´t hesitate to book here.

I found the guys at Flying Dog very friendly and helpful. I had a 4 bed dorm which was clean and spacious. The breakfast is a bit light on (even compared to other Flying Dogs in Peru) and the wifi is slow but it is in the worlds biggest jungle and they are upfront about that so no qualms there. Overall had a great time in Iquitos and at the Flying Dog. Thanks guys. Ps if traveling through Peru ask for a Travelling Card to get discounts at the other Flying Dogs. It all helps!
