I had an amazing experience at Monkey Island. It is very hands on with the Monkeys, they come right up to you and are not one sky. One baby monkey jumped in to my arms and didn’t want to leave! It was so cute. There are many different species of monkeys there. The owner is a kind genuine man who dedicates his life to giving the monkeys a safe sanctuary.

Highly recommended!

It took 2 boats or launches to go to Monkey Island from Iquitos about an hour’s trip. The boats do not leave until they are full. The first boat cost 15 soles each way, the second you will need to call the Island to arrange pickup, and it is 10 soles round trip. The entrance fee to the island is 20 soles bringing it to a total of 60 soles or about $25US and worth every penny. Do bring extra for tipping your guide and the kids that are extremely helpful. There are also souvenirs to buy as well.
I was greeted, as soon as the boat landed, by a remarkably precocious Mono Arana Spider Monkey; what a delightful surprise. Our young guide was there ready to begin showing us around and introducing us to all the different monkeys. They do have their own individual unique personalities.
Some of the different monkeys were the Choro Barrigudo or woolley Monkey, Tocon Titi, Coto Aullador or Howler, The devilishly cute little Pichico Or Tamarin, Huapo Negro or Monk Saki, and a Pelejo sloth but that one we did not see. Sloths sleep during the day, and as far as that goes, most of the night too, they move exceedingly slow, so it is harder to find them when walking through the jungle. The population of monkeys does change as new ones come into the group. Some are too aggressive to start and are caged for their own protection and the protection of the other monkeys.

This place is unreal. Don't ask questions, if you love animals just go. Go and donate. Gilberto is a great human being who deserves help and support. Take the boat boat from Puerto de Productores. The boat ride is over 40 minutes to Mazan and another 15 to Isla de los Monos. We intend on returning!

I have always been fascinated with monkeys, and I was grateful to learn about Monkey Island from tripadvisor. Be aware, there are many "tour guides" who will take your money, to take you there. It is NOT necessary to do that. You can take a speed boat from the dock. The boats are public transportation, and will not leave until the boat is full, so you may end up having to wait a little while for the trip, but for only 6 sol each way, who can complain. The taxi boat takes you to another side of Iquitos. From there, you will be picked up by the boat that takes you to Monkey Island. YOU DO HAVE TO CALL AHEAD, TO LET THEM KNOW WHEN YOU EXPECT TO BE THERE, SO THEY CAN PICK YOU UP. There is no charge for this boat ride, as it is included in your tour, but we did tip our driver. The "donation" at the island for the tour is 20 sol. We had thought we'd need about 2 hours to see everything, and had told our driver to be back at that time, HOWEVER, since we were the only ones there that day, we could quickly see our tour would be over much sooner than we expected. Luckily the driver was still there, and we asked him to wait another half hour for us, which he was happy to do. If there are no other visitors, plan on visiting about 40 minutes. We got some GREAT pictures, and would HIGHLY recommend visiting the island.

We went to Peru for a mission trip and visited Monkey Island on one of our free afternoons. We were very impressed with the care the monkeys were receiving and loved how friendly the monkeys were. We were able to get some great pictures of the monkeys with some of our friends. Definitely recommend others go to visit the island and help support the great work being done there.
