“Best in town”
Reviewed 28 September 2011

We stayed one night before going downriver. Hotel is modern and comfortable, with a good bed and quiet environment. Iquitos is a very interesting place to visit with much of the city in serious decline. The residents we met were happy and friendly. Far from 4Star, but a good place to stay in a frontier city.

I go to Iquitos frequently for business and always stay at dorado plaza for several days. By far the best hotel in town. Great service, airport transport, good amenities, rooms well-equipped, friendly employees, clean facilities, great food (always now dishes to try), good security, large rooms, fair prices for a 5* hotel. Internet connection is pretty bad in the whole town. In the past 2 years I've seen the Hotel remodeled twice. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Choose the rooms with pool view, those are quieter!

I stayed here on business for several weeks in August 2011. It was a frustrating and disappointing stay. This hotel might have been a 5 star at some time in the distant past (the building has the physical characteristics of a good hotel), but even by Peruvian standards, it is nothing more than a dirty, run down and poorly managed 3 star today.

I WILL NOT return to this hotel. In the future, I'll stay either at the Victoria Regia or at La Casa Moray. I visited both of these hotels just before I left Iquitos, to suss them out for future use, and both of them are much better (and about one third the price) of the El Dorado Plaza.

I've listed the pros and cons of the El Dorado Plaza hotel below.

Advantages:
- Great location directly on the main square (Plaza des Armes) of the town
- Large pool, kids would enjoy it
- Large rooms
- Good security
- Free transport to and from the airport
- Fast and good quality laundry service

Disadvantages:
- COCKROACHES - not what you want to bring home in your clothes and luggage

- No hot water at any time, warm water available in the mornings only, tepid the rest of the time. Water heaters have been turned down very low to save energy.

- Very noisy at all times due to location on main road (affects rooms at front) and loud music from the patio at the rear (affects rooms at the back)

- Internet service is hopeless, with speed equal to a 9,600 baud modem, the hotel firewall and 'parental controls' associated with the hotel ISP make sending emails almost impossible

- Air conditioner in room noisy and frequently inoperative

- Rooms are dirty, decor is worn out, carpet and furnishings in rooms and public areas are all original from the early 1980s. The hotel did not have a single operating vacuum cleaner anywhere in the building during the two weeks I was there. Makes me wonder what the kitchen cleanliness would have been like.

- Bed was lumpy and the mattress was long past its 'best before' date.

- Housekeepers and hotel staff are noisy when in hallways and public areas, they are completely unaware that guests use the rooms primarily for sleeping. Staff have no formal hospitality industry training.

- Breakfast food offerings are dismal, limited choice at the buffet, no variety from day to day. Get there early or all you get is the leftovers.

- No coat hangers provided in the closet in the rooms.

- No Kleenex provided in the bathrooms

- No desk or other suitable business work area in the rooms

- No coffeemakers or complimentary bottled water (and the rack rate is $200 a day!)

- Bathroom amenities are similar to what you would get at a Super 8 or Days Inn

- Hotel posts all expenses in US dollars, then converts that US$ total to Peruvian Sols at a very inflated rate (3.1 sols to the USD when current bank rate was 2.8 to 1), then charges your credit card in Peruvian Sols... what a scam, and you are not told about this until the day you check out.

- Coffee costs $4 and cappuccino costs $5.50. Anywhere else in the town you pay $1 and $1.50 respectively.

-75¢ a page to print documents on an old inkjet printer that uses a poor quality, recycled toner cartridge - and your USB stick is then returned with various viruses and Trojans on it.

All in all, this hotel is a real nickle and dime operation. The owner is squeezing every last penny of profit out of the place, and not re-investing a penny. This hotel is a place where the Thénardier's (the thieving and treacherous hotel keeping couple from the musical Les Miserables) could go to learn new tricks.

For short term visitors (1 to 3 nights) to Iquitos, I would recommend Le Casa Moray. For longer term business visits, I would recommend the Victoria Regia. Both of these hotels are cleaner, better run, and offer far better value for the money.

We were staying in Equitos only one night to prepare to be picked up by a riverboat company the next day. After arriving we were sorry we could not arrange for an additional day stay as the area and community looked very inviting and interesting to say the least. Our room was OK but had absolutely no view of anything but it really didn't matter as it was nightfall already and we were out early the next day. We were woken up at 3:00 am by construction noise of all things - called the front desk to complain and shortly after things quieted down. Very strange. OK breakfast the next morning. They seem to keep the temperature around 80 degrees with high humidity in the common areas of the hotel, but that's Iquitos.

Room Tip: Get one facing the plaza or you get zero view.

My husband and I, and another couple stayed at this hotel twice during our trip to the Amazon basin. Considering that Iquitos is the largest city inaccessible by road in the world, it is more expensive than some other cities in Peru and some amenities are hard to maintain. That might explain why the Dorado Plaza hotel struggled with its air conditioning, and had its only elevator out of order for at least 5 days running. In spite of these inconveniences, we were delighted with the service and cleanliness of this hotel. My husband forgot a few shirts in the room after leaving for our Amazon cruise, but the hotel staff not only located them, they had them laundered and waiting in our new room upon our return at no charge. The free breakfasts in the morning were very good, and the location on the Plaza des Armes can't be beat. As our friends summed up, "it is a 5 star hotel with a 3 star bathroom". Bring your own toiletries, and you will be fine. All our contacts in Iquitos confirm that it is the best in the city; after all, you are in the middle of the Amazon !

You have to put this hotel in context and consider that it is located in a very remote, hot and humid part of the world. At the same time, calling it 5-star conjures up images which it cannot and does not match.

Iquitos is a busy, small, dirty, hot, sweaty, lively, noisy-with-hustle-and-bustle kind of place. There are roaches on the street, "tuk tuks" everywhere and kids working hard to sell you souvenirs. I loved the place but I realise more delicate people won't want to leave the refuge of their hotel. This one is in a great location in the main square with shops, restaurants etc all on its doorstep and Eiffel's Iron House close by. The street frontage is nice and stylish if I recall correctly but once inside you already start to think, "5-star? Are you sure?" as everything looks quite drab.

Our room on the 4th floor was fairly big and had almost everything we could need including a little lounge/TV area with a sofa and coffee table, a safe, a minibar, large wardrobe (no iron though) and a sizeable bathroom. It was let down by the tired decor, thin walls (we could hear our neighbours' heated discussion) and the view overlooking an unoccupied building but we were very comfortable.

The pool area is lovely as others have described. The restaurant is an atmosphere-free cafe - there are lots of better options nearby if you are happy to explore a bit. The bar tucked along a side wall is also fairly unappealing. The lobby offers surprisingly little respite from the heat as it is atrium-style and almost feels open-air. The staff are friendly and helpful and I'm assured this is the best hotel in Iquitos.

I stayed at this hotel after 8 days in the jungle camping. We needed air conditioning and a great shower and bed. Obviously I have no problems roughing it.

We arrived and were checked in - I specifically asked about the air conditioning and was told they had it. We were escorted to our room which was adequate - and the bell man turned on the air conditioner and told us about the temperature control. We set it at the coldest setting and went to dinner.

On our return at 9 pm the room was still hot. I called to the front desk and was told it was broken and they were working on it. I asked for a fan to be sent to our room as the windows did not open. At 10 pm no fan - and the room was 32 degrees celcius. I called down and was told that they did not expect the air con to be fixed but the would send a fan. At 10:20 pm I went in person to get a fan or get moved. I was told that the air con had not been working for several days. I asked for the manager who eventually came after 20 minutes. He finally suggested that he would move us to his sister property a block down. We agreed and also asked for a concession on the rate. He offered 30% off which we agreed to.

By now it is after 11 pm and we have packed up and he cannot figure out how to give us the discount. He offered us a late check out (which we did not need). My husband was so pissed off and exhausted that he agreed so we could get some sleep. The next day at the new hotel we discovered their rack rate was at leat $60 cheaper. We had to leave for the airport and did not have time to argue.

Overall not a great experience and the service levels left much to be desired.
