“Didn't meet up with our expectations”
Reviewed 9 August 2014 via mobile

We had dinner in this small restaurant. It was suggested to us by our host.

We didn't like it very much and it was not very cheap.
The room was filled with strong cooking smells.

Portions are really big.

“3.5 Traditional peruvian cooking.local institution”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

Eclectic decor in an old building. High ceilings, plastered with soccer memorabilia. Quite large and popular but quiet often at night. Been around for very long time.
Food is typical peruvians with none of the new fusion style. That means well cooked, fresh ingredients, large portions, hearty rather than delicate, flavor. Large menu. Friendly old style waiter when we go.
It's a simple place to go with a group of friends or slip in as a couple. Fun. Ok value in part because the portions are large and you can share plates.

“Loved it”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

It's been a while since I last visit Peru but go there every time I am there. Local, not fancy, small place, FANTASTIC ceviche and the other typical Peruvian dishes are all excellent and taste home cooked.

“What not to order”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

The decor will get you in, especially while the world cup is on and everyone is football mad. This corner building is painted in the most divine shade of turquoise with red woodwork, but if that isn't enough to identify it, the interior hung with national flags and football posters will.
There seems to be some claim to fame on the part of the chef at this establishment: there is a certificate from the Cordon Bleu framed on the wall, but from our experience it belonged to a chef long gone or at least absent the night we ate there.
Choosing from the menu would have been simpler if we were in the mood for anything battered and fried, but feeling like a lighter and healthier option was fraught.
My partner's mojito was watery in the extreme, lacking both alcohol and mint, so he exchanged it for a local beer. The free corn nibbles on the table were hit or miss- some were decidedly rancid, leaving literally a bad taste in the mouth.

We ordered tiradito- that was a winner. More delicately prepared than a ceviche and light on the palate with a smattering of not too hot chili, lime and salt sprinkled over the thin carpaccio style raw fish.
Unfortunately fish a la meunier was a travesty. The fish was far too heavily floured and fried until stiff and the sauce accompanied it was no doubt from an industrial chemist's laboratory. I had no idea anyone would resort to a commercial sauce for such a simple dish- why on earth would you?
Lastly a large bowl of langoustine soup was notable for the lack of the aformentioned langoustine in both flavour or physical presence. There were prawns aplenty, but that was not what I ordered, and language difficulties being what they were we left if at that.

People are attracted to this restaurant because of the decorations- and a restaurant with patrons in turn attracts more patrons.
However, there is no chance when I return to Barranco that I will give this over-hyped 'restaurant' a second glance.

“The Best”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

We walked in just wandering around Barranco while the place was empty, but we liked the feel of it so we took a chance. Before we finished our starters the place was packed, and I understand why. Ceviche is amazing. Their soups are also delicious. Everything is delicious. We ate there at the very beginning of our trip around Peru and Bolivia, and for the rest of the trip were planning what we would eat at Canta Rana on our last day back in Lima before going home. Loved this place, definitely best food we had in South America.
