Many of the conventional travel guides will have you believe Lima is a flyover city - somewhere you transfer on your way to Machu Pichu or other Inca-related sites; however, this would be a mistake, not least of which is because of Lima's vibrant culinary scene. We sought out Peru Culinary Vacations to provide us with a market tour and private cooking class and they delivered. It was a lovely experience with a very personable chef and a private lesson in his restaurant kitchen. Our group (3 people - all foodies) was watched over by Ursula who did a fantastic job. This is a great experience and well worth the time and money.

We were late signing up but a great private day with Carlos was arranged. The market trip was fun and quite educational. Carlos takes his time and seems to enjoy it all himself as well. We bought some great oil (an Inca kind that lowers cholesterol!), pink salt, and dried fruit. Then off to San Isidro for our pisco sours and lunch at Carlos's place. Again, he takes his time and is so pleasant and helpful. My husband and I made some traditional Peruvian food, and now that we are home we will wow our friends with our new culinary skills. A little tour of the Lima grocery chain Wong ended our day. It's sort of a Whole Foods + department store with the helpers in costume. Cheers for PicaPeru.

We had a very memorable experience with Pica Peru Culinary group that was one of the highlights of our trip to Peru. My husband and I are not great cooks, but we do love food and wanted to explore the Lima food scene. Further, we were looking for something to occupy our last day in Lima before our midnight flight. Pica Peru tailored an afternoon of activities for us and was very accommodating with our requests.

We started at a juice bar and tried several juices. The variety of fruits and vegetables is so much greater in Peru than other places and we tried juices made from fruits we had never heard of before. During this time, we had a great conversation with Ursula, one of the owner-sisters of Pica Peru, about living and working in Lima that gave us more insights to the lifestyle there.

Then we met up with our chef, Fernando, at a local market. I love visiting markets in our travels, but this was the first time we went with someone who knew what everything was! He would pick up any fruit we asked about and cut a slice off for us to try. It was a great experience.

Next we moved to the restaurant Fernando runs (La Gloria) and made pisco sours and chilcanos at the bar. The restaurant wasn’t open yet so we had the place to ourselves. Back in the kitchen, we made three different dishes that are currently on the menu. He was very good about instructing and then letting us make our own. He also had a few assistants to help us out. It was really cool to be in the kitchen of an actual restaurant making some very good dishes! Then we moved out to the restaurant and enjoyed our meal with a few glasses of wine. The chef talked with us about his background and living in Lima, which really added a personal dimension to the 'class'.

It was an extremely enjoyable and unique experience all around. We would highly recommend it.

Had a wonderful time with Chef Carlos. He is so friendly and very funny. Just loved it! Went to the market with Chef Carlos and tasted many different fruits and seeds. Afterwards went to Chef Carlos' place to cook with him. His house is just gorgeous! Highly recommend it!

The one day Culinary Excursion with Chef Carlos is an experience my husband and I will always treasure. From the introduction to new and exotic fruits, vegtables and seafoods at the market to the fabulous class at his roof top terrace this is a excursion that should not be missed if you love food, new flavors and cuisines. Plan an extra day in Lima for this. You won't be disappointed.
