“Ole Historic Hotel”
Reviewed 13 September 2011

The Gran Bolivaar gets high marks for nostalgia. A beautiful grand entrance and welcoming staff. We stayed 2 nights here. A great location for walking El Centro, the historic district. We couldn't have picked a better location. The breakfast was wonderful. They served all the staples but you could ask for extras like a piece of ham or bacon. If you are a light sleeper would recommend NOT sleeping on the Plaza side as there is a lot of street noise. There were 2 other couples so we had 6 rooms total. The rooms were spacious with nice showers and hot water. There was some mustiness, but to be expected in an old hotel like this that hadn't spent a lot on updates. They also arranged transport to and from airport at an additional cost of $24 USD (6 persons) or $18 for 4. A great rate per night for a matrimonial, we paid $70/night. Can't beat that. I would recommend the Bolivar for nostalgic reasons alone.

This was one of the highlights of the trip for us! Our room was amazing - all original features from over 100 years ago! We had a large wardrobe, a comfortable parlour type seating area, a nice bedroom and big bathroom. The staff were very friendly, and the location was perfect. However, avoid the restaurant for lunch or dinner. We were really disappointed. We stayed in Miraflores when we arrived and in Lima Centro at the end of our trip, and Lima Centro is far more interesting and beautiful. Its a UNESCO world heritage site!

This is a beautiful antique hotel located within the Centro Historico (Historic Center) and at walking distance from the Plaza de Armas. Staying at this hotel is like travelling with the time machine, there is even a Ford T at the lobby. Our room an bath were huge! All the furniture is classic. Service and personel were excellent. The food at the restaurant was delicious. Location is great if you are going to stay for a short time at Lima, you can get to know the historic center. You are also at walking distance from the Metropolitano (bus) which can take you to San Isidro or Miraflores for only a few soles and very quickly. I recommend this hotel.

Great funky old hotel. Large, expansive and old. Staff and rooms are were great. Rooms on plaza will be noisy plus one side of hotel you can hear a disco all night but the staff is willing to find a room that will suite your needs. Ask for inside rooms. Hotel and rooms are clean.

The hotel has seen better day and glamor. It remains good value for the money. Showing up with no booking is more expensive than using an internet booking service. You have to go to different floors and visit the various rooms at street level to experience the feeling of grandeur. Same goes if you use the stairs instead of the elevator.
The breakfast and the service are good.
The location means it is likely to experience local festivals or parades (weekends) but food, entertainment and shopping are less than Miraflores or Barraco.

The hotel is located close to the heart of the historic district with all the sightseeing highlights in walking distance. Entering the hotel is like stepping back in time. It offers the decaying charm of the early years of the last century. Lobby and reception area display rare collector's items, individual historic design and outfit, rooms are spacious and sanitary facilities are not luxurious, but acceptable. Everything is old, showing the signs of the century long use, sometimes a little run down, but clean. Day and night traffic noise can not be ignored, but is still tolerable.

Staff at the reception and the bar/restaurant is somewhat held back, even if you are in command of the Spanish language. Food is not too exciting.

If you are able to accept some of these shortcomings you will enjoy a very individual old fashioned stay which is rare to find elsewhere.

If you have the desire to explore the surroundings, to go to the modern Lima, to one of the museums not in the vicinity, to the beach or airport, you should take one of the taxis waiting in front of the hotel. The driver will take you to any place or on a tour and wait for you at a rate between 20-25$ for 4-6hrs.
