We had read such good things about this hotel and were looking forward to our stay. We booked a room with a sea view but were put in an inside room with no view (the only window was behind the shower). The room was damp and the toilet is only marginally separated from the rest of the room by a half partition. It was possibly the worst room I have ever stayed in. The person we talked to was rude and dismissive when we asked why we did not get the room wee booked. On the positive side, the artwork is great but it does not make up for the horrible room.

Room Tip: It does not matter what you request they will put you wherever they want to.

Barranco's a lovely neighbourhood to walk around, generally safe, with weathered low-rise charm, quirky colours, bars and restaurants. The view over the sea (and the sunset) from the house and garden, with Victor Delfin's artwork all around, is special. So is the breakfast, and you can help yourself to coffee or tea, including coca tea, all day long. Wi-fi's included.

If you're staying in the original house - and I didn't see the rooms near the artist's studio - you never forget that you're in a house. Although the house as a whole is quiet, noise carries internally from the other rooms. The rooms are generously-sized, with high ceilings, but on the funky side: ours had an odd, musty smell. The water alternated scalding and icy, so a bath was safer than a shower. The bedding was good, but on the whole, the rooms could use an upgrade. Best to bear in mind that you're not paying for the facilities so much as for the charm of the experience - anonymous and corporate this is not!

As you've probably read elsewhere Second Home Peru is the former home and studio of artist Victor Delfin. It has been beautifully converted to a small hotel in the quiet neighborhood of Barranco about 20 min. south of central Lima.

My wife and I spent the first 3 nights of our honeymoon here and loved it. We had a room with an ocean view patio. The common areas and grounds have stunning artwork (if you like contemporary art, that is). Breakfast was simple, freshly prepared and accompanied by wagging tails of the resident dogs.

Barranco is a lovely and above all quiet neighborhood where you can stroll the streets and enjoy yourself without being hounded by touts.

There are no real negatives about this place, but know that cab drivers will most likely not know where it is, so having the exact address will help.

Room Tip: We had a room in the older original home. It was large and comfortable. We even had the "shared...

We stayed here on our last night in Peru and it made us want to stay just a little longer. This is a beautiful hotel with gorgeous art everywhere and located in a very nice area of Lima. The artist has his studio there in the hotel and we found out after exploring the grounds a little. Normally I think you are supposed to ask for a tour of his studio but he saw us looking around near the pool and invited us in. His art decorates the hotel and it is just absolutely amazing. There is a view of the ocean and the Bridge of Sighs. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean. The beds are very comfortable and there is a heater if needed. The rooms seem to be kind of spread out and we stayed in a room in the interior. While the room was clean it did smell a little bit like an old, musty house, but it is a 100 year-old house so it wasn't a huge shock nor was it off-putting. Breakfast is in a quaint little kitchen and they will make your eggs to order while you sit at a large dining table with bench seating. It was a wonderful experience, don't pass it up!

We stayed here on our last night in Peru and it was a very special end to our trip. The place is just mind blowing with art everywhere around you. The rooms themselves are very nice too. Breakfast is fantastic. We generally liked Barranco, and this is particularly nice part of it, and also very safe. Very good restaurants in the area (I would recommend Canta Rana).

Stayed 2 nights at Second Home in Lima unusual and beautiful hotel in the very nice area of Lima, Barranco. Interesting house with pieces of art displayed, large bedrooms and great garden to sit in. Breakfast was in their kitchen although were we only expecting a continental type breakfast we were asked if we wanted eggs, boiled or scrambled which was a bonus. Near to town and restaurants felt very safe.

Room Tip: The three bedrooms we looked at with our party of 6 were all very good but liked the garden facing r...

The Second Home experience certainly feels quite unlike staying in a conventional hotel. The premises and its grounds are indeed beautiful and full of the intriguing artwork of Delfin (including many sculptures in the garden). Our room was comfortable and stylish, although the open plan toilet arrangements were a little inconvenient on occasion (being the occasions when you want to…..I think you can guess the rest).

We did feel a little abandoned on checking in (essentially handed the keys and left to get on with it) but a little exploring revealed what the place had to offer. We got to know the patron and staff a little better over the period of our stay and found the male receptionist (if that’s the right word for him) in particular to be incredibly helpful. He must have phoned around half the restaurants in Lima to find us a table at a good restaurant on short notice on a Friday evening.

For us, Barranco felt a little edgier than other travellers experienced. Our first stop on arriving in the district was a pharmacist on the main plaza. We were a little perturbed to see that the security guard was armed with a wooden club with six-inch nails driven through it and to find that the shampoo was under lock and key. The ruined church next to the Bridge of Sighs also struck a rather sinister note, with vultures looming on seemingly every available perch. The beach is amongst the bleakest stretches of seafront that I have seen – a blasted strip of rubble next to a busy highway. Still, from the vantage point of Second Home, the traffic noise disappears and the ocean views – and sounds of the sea – are very pleasant.

An unusual experience then, but a unique one that made for an interesting stay.
