We took a leisurely walk to the Sun Gate. About an hour going up and 45 minutes coming down. We spent about 20 minutes at the gate admiring the view and looking back down the Inca Trail that enters the gate. The trail is a bit steep but if you take your time and look back down toward Machu Picchu and enjoy the view and take pictures it is easily doable.

It's not as hard as Huayna but can be hot in the sun. It gives you a view looking down on MP that you don't get unless you do this or Huayna. It's a casual hour but the average person will get up quicker. Wear decent shoes, bring some water and you'll be fine. It's not so much about the ruins as it is about what the location means and the view. The more you get around the whole Machu Picchu complex the more you will appreciate it.

This hike is long and fairly steep at points. From the guard house at Machu Picchu it takes about 50 minutes of strenuous hiking up, but worth it to see the great views. The hike down is much easier, but can be a little slippery.

As others have mentioned this is a one hour walk (and 45 minutes back) that will see how fit you are. We loved the hike and the various viewpoints you get of Machu Picchu. The only advice I would give is go early or late (not in the middle of the day), take water, sunscreen and mozzie spray (even in winter) .....and most of all keep your eyes out for sheer cliffs of red bromeliads, plus native orchids and begonias beside the trail. A great day for the botanically minded!

Fairly easy walk up to the Sun Gate for any one in fairly good shape with no altitude or heights issues. Expect an hour hike uphill and another hour back down. We headed up as soon as we got to Machu Picchu, and the weather was lovely; I expect that it gets quite steamy by the afternoon though. The views are well worth the hike.
