“Hotel Sol is the place to stay in Ollentaytambo”
Reviewed 4 August 2013

Hotel Sol was actually our alternate choice for our stay in Ollentaytambo. We originally wanted to stay at the hotel near the train station and we are so glad I didn’t reserve the room in time! Ollentaytambo is an amazing little town and Hotel Sol is right in the middle of it. The train station is about a ½ a mile away from the town down a road that can be quite dark at night.

At Hotel Sol, we requested a room with a view of the ruins which was amazing! We timed our visit to the ruins based on how many people we could see on the stairs of the ruins from our window. The market and the ruins were about a 2 minute walk in one direction as was the Plaza de Armas in the other direction, which had a lot of different places to eat. We were surprised to see the amount of restaurants with pizza on the menu! I highly recommend having wood-fired pizza in this town.

The rooms were nice and clean. They were a bit cold at night when the sun went down. Breakfast was okay as well. The staff was amazing. They held our luggage for us while we went to Machu Picchu for one night with just our overnight bags and they arranged for a taxi to drive us to Cusco directly to our next hotel upon arriving back from Machu Picchu.

Highly recommend staying up in Ollentaytambo rather than at the train station, especially at Hotel Sol.

Room Tip: Request a room with a view of the ruins.

We stayed here due to it's good rating on Tripadvisor and a recommendation from a friend. Totally worth it. The staff is super accommodating and super friendly. The place is stylish and comfortable. The best part is it's just a stone's throw from the ruins and if you're on the right side of the hotel, you can actually see the ruins from your room. There's also a little stream that runs next to the hotel that adds to the ambience. The shower in our particular room was not as warm as possible and the breakfast in the morning was not set up by the time they said it would be, but we found these two things to be not quite right in a several hotels in Peru. Waking up in the morning with the view of the ruins off in the distance was amazing.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the ruins.

I had a room with the view of the Inca ruins and the river. At night the river sounded as if there was a storm outside. Great sound to make me fall asleep. The room was nice and clean. The bed was comfortable. The staff was nice. The only down side is that there are a few cats the lobby area. So you might have a few cats hair on you if you sit down in the lobby.

Hotel Sol was a breath of fresh air after all of our travelling chaos and stress. After seemingly hundreds of unhelpful employees, from the airlines, to the airports, to the taxis, to other hotels - we got to Hotel Sol and took a deep relaxing breath. Lluc helped us out with everything. Our pick up service in Cuzco was right on time and the driver was so friendly - and we were able to pay him through the Hotel. Our room was one with the balcony and a view of the Ollantaytambo Ruins. It was quiet and beautiful. They even held our bags for us while we spent an amazing day touring the quaint town.

Room Tip: Choose room 201, or a balcony room

We stayed in Hotel Sol for 1 night, before taking the train to Machu Picchu. Our room had a balcony that overlooked a stream and had a great view of the Incan ruins. Breakfast was disappointing as the selection was very limited. Otherwise, we were very happy with the hotel.

The hotel is located close to restaurants, the ruins and the main square. Staff was very helpful We were given a later checkout (to 11:30 am) as our train to MP did not leave until the early afternoon.

I would describe this hotel as "charming." It's situated in a beautiful location: within sight of the Incan ruins in Ollantaytambo, and right next to the river (request a room with a view of the ruins and you'll be able to see both the ruins and the river from your window). It's also just a two minute walk to the handicraft market, the main plaza, an ATM, and is directly across the street from my favorite restaurant.

The rooms themselves are simple but have character: the paint may need touching up in places, but they're very clean and the decorations are tasteful.

The person working at the front desk was more than helpful, and answered many, many questions for me (bus and train schedules, calling my next hotel in another city, ATM, etc). Also, they provide a water jug you can fill your reusable water bottles from for less than the cost of buying bottled water. A simple but yummy breakfast is included as well (several types of bread, jam, fruit, fruit juice/coffee/tea, and eggs).

Space heater can be provided upon request. 10-15 minute walk from the train station.

Room Tip: Request a room with a view of the ruins.

Nice hotel located close to everything in Ollantaytambo. It has a stream flowing next to it and a nice view of the ruins from the balcony. Property could be managed better. I had requested for a pick up from the train station but nobody showed up. There were people from other hotels to pick their guests. We had to get a cab ourselves to the hotel. Breakfast wasn't anything to write about. Room that we stayed in was spacious and overlooked a nice coutyard on the inside. Would consider it for my next visit to Ollantaytambo.
