“Great start to our trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2013

We loved our stay at Hotel Sol. The staff was courteous and helpful. The location is great for this little town and access to the ruins. The hotel was clean, functional, and had lots of hot water. Our view of the ruins was perfect. Lluc helped us with everything we needed from a van from the airport to our MP tickets. We were able to set up day tours and a van for transport all over the Sacred Valley for the two days we were there (there are 6 in our family so this is a big task). We loved the experience of staying in Ollantaytambo and would recommend Hotel Sol and the staff over and over again.

Room Tip: Get a ruin view, you won't be disappointed,

Ollantaytambo is a beautiful town, in the sense that you feel the village is just as it always was. After visiting Machu Picchu, we wanted to see the other sites through the Sacred Valley and so the last stop for the Perurail train that we took was Ollantaytambo...and so we made it our last stop that day as well.
We took a Tuk-Tuk up from the Train Station to the hotel (on the end of the same street, at the corner). If it wasn't for our small, yet heavy bags...we would have walked the easy 1 km.
The Hotel was expecting us, we booked ahead online and were quite happy with the simple accommodations.
The town was perfectly situated near the archeological site and one of our best restaurant finds in the country and this allowed us to check in, drop our bags and to see the site before the Sacred Valley Tour crowds arrived.
Once the crowds had come and gone, Ollantaytambo takes on a whole different feel, as though you are living in an existing Inca town...which in fact it is. The aqueducts that you see in all the ancient sites are still functioning here, bringing an incredible amount of water down each street in the urban center. Stone walls and stone fences run up every street, making way to stone buildings. At night, the streets come alive with the local people...many in their beautiful traditional clothes.
All of this you wouldn't see unless you stayed the night and Hotel Sol is great value for the night. I enjoyed the family atmosphere and yet how quiet the town and the hotel were at night, once we were warm and in our rooms. The internet signal wasn't all that strong in the room and only marginally better elsewhere in the hotel. We kept busy enough here though that we only needed it for minimal purposes.
I was able to get up early and take more photos of the Easter exposure, as Ollantaytambo is built on two mountain sides, one facing east the other west. I was able to re-enter without paying again, using my multiple Cusco pass and by showing my passport.
Breakfast is served in a beautiful 2nd floor room of the hotel facing the archeological site. some of the rooms, I believe the triple rooms faced the site and the small river running beside the hotel.
Choosing to stay in Ollantaytambo was a great idea as it allowed us to continue on the next day seeing site after site on the way back to Cusco.
Choosing Hotel Sol was the right choice as well.

Room Tip: I think the triple rooms face the river and the archeological site, which would be nice. Our room fa...

This is a great hotel in Ollantayambo!! Awesome quality for the price. The staff are nice (all former muleteers or cooks, so they value good service). Delicious breakfast. Located across from a charming cafe that makes awesome Bonafi pie. Would definitely stay here again!!

Had room with view of ruins. Clean and comfortable with great location. Staff excellent, Lluc was awsome setting up tickets for MP and Train flawlessly. While it might be a basic hotel, in this location it was an island of serenity at the end of our long days. Stayed 3 nights. The KB hostel next door is ok also but no views of Ruins.

Room Tip: Room with view of ruins

Loved the views of the Ollantaytambo ruins and sound of the river from our hotel room. Staff were pleasant and friendly. The Hotel is 5-10 minutes walk to the train station so it is a very suitable place to stay on the way to Machu Picchu. Breakfast was very basic but sufficient with cereal, buns/scones, jams, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, juice, and eggs made to order. Our beds were very basic and much less comfortable than what we had been used to on our trip, but we had been staying in 4 and 5 star hotels. The room furnishings are very plain but our room was a good size. Washroom was not high end-modern but was clean. Shower had great water pressure. The hotel is small with just 1-2 people on staff. If you want a luxury hotel, this is not the place for you, however, I am not sure if there is a luxury hotel in Ollantaytambo. The traffic near the hotel can be loud as the hotel is next to the main road and bridge over the river - traffic volume and noise seemed less at night. We were woken by a door bell around 4am.

Hotel Sol Ollantay is THE place to stay when you visit Peru. Located just a couple of blocks from the Fortress (La Fortaleza) in Ollantaytambo. The personnel (Frida, Wilberg, and Jenny) will do anything to ensure your stay is pleasant and memorable. We stayed in Hotel Sol Ollantay for 3 nights in a room with the best view to the ruins (the Fortress) and next to river Patacancha. For an extra fee, the hotel provides taxi from/to Cuzco and to the archaeological places in the area. Marco Antonio (one of the taxi drivers/tour guides hired by the hotel) not only drove us to the nearby ruins and Cuzco but gave us really good advice about which restaurants to visit and not-to-miss places. Frida and Wilberg in the lobby helped us with every detail during our stay (they certainly know what it is to be the perfect host!). Jenny in the cafeteria made sure that we had a good breakfast before starting the day. The hotel is conveniently located close to the Fortress, the Plaza the Armas (town's main square), the Punkuylluna ruins, and the train station (but far enough so the train noise won't wake you up). The rooms and general areas are clean and neat. I specially loved that they use fresh flowers as decoration. For only 2 soles per liter you have the option to refill your bottle of water in the lobby (helping the environment and your pocket because it's cheaper than buying a new bottle). There is also free coffee and tea (assorted flavors) in the lobby (24 hour service). And after a long day in the ruins, and tours to the textile communities, a hot water shower helped us to relax.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view to the ruins/river are the best.

Hotel Sol was actually our alternate choice for our stay in Ollentaytambo. We originally wanted to stay at the hotel near the train station and we are so glad I didn’t reserve the room in time! Ollentaytambo is an amazing little town and Hotel Sol is right in the middle of it. The train station is about a ½ a mile away from the town down a road that can be quite dark at night.

At Hotel Sol, we requested a room with a view of the ruins which was amazing! We timed our visit to the ruins based on how many people we could see on the stairs of the ruins from our window. The market and the ruins were about a 2 minute walk in one direction as was the Plaza de Armas in the other direction, which had a lot of different places to eat. We were surprised to see the amount of restaurants with pizza on the menu! I highly recommend having wood-fired pizza in this town.

The rooms were nice and clean. They were a bit cold at night when the sun went down. Breakfast was okay as well. The staff was amazing. They held our luggage for us while we went to Machu Picchu for one night with just our overnight bags and they arranged for a taxi to drive us to Cusco directly to our next hotel upon arriving back from Machu Picchu.

Highly recommend staying up in Ollentaytambo rather than at the train station, especially at Hotel Sol.

Room Tip: Request a room with a view of the ruins.
