El Albergue is a great boutique hotel. Although it is on the Ollantaytambo Railway Station (really, you open the door and you are on the platform), if you think you do not want the sounds of the trains to disturb you, stay in the rooms towards the back. It is really worth it. We chose it for its location. We took the first Vista Dome Train to MP and were able to take the last Expedition Train from MP because of this hotel. Just got off the train, walked into the hotel and into our room!!!! What more can you ask for! (By doing this we got the maximum time in MP (6 hours at the site itself not including the bus and train journey !!!).
Back to the hotel. Our superior balcony room was spacious, neatly and romantically furnished and the view from the windows and our balcony was breathtaking. It was a heady feeling to see the snow capped peaks of the Andean mountains so close up.
El Albergue boasts of the best restaurant in town. We agree. Although on the pricy side, it is worth it. My husband tried the Alpaca steak and liked it. Do try their Pisco Sours, especially during the happy hour. The breakfast is wholesome and good. The staff is courteous and helpful. Sergio at the reception took great pains to ensure that our stay was a memorable one. He told us about shortcuts to the ruins among other useful information and he has a great sense of humour. An asset to any service oriented place.
We stayed here for 3 nights and whole heartedly and strongly recommend it.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at El Albergue. For us it was an indulgence and worth the money. If on a tight budget this is definitely the place for an indulgence! The rooms are beautiful and immaculately clean. We enjoyed two meals in the dining room with our friends and no one was dissappointed. The alpaca steak is fantastic; and there are great choices for vegetarians. If you are missing salad this is a place you can enjoy fresh greens as the owner has an organic garden on the premises. There is also the Maya Cafe at the hotel serving up espresso for your train ride to Macchu Pichu! Can't say enough wonderful things about the place, It is charming and the service is superb. Did I mention there is a sauna available for hotel guests!

We stayed 1 night at this hotel in August 2011, as part of a 3 weeks trip to Peru and Brazil. El Albergue definitely qualifies as one of the best hotels we stayed at in Peru.
The hotel is conveniently located near (almost in) the Ollantaytambo railway station.

Our room was nicely equipped, very clean, fully meeting the room description from the hotels website. It was located at the back of the hotel, so pretty quiet.

The hotel has a small and beautiful garden and overall bursts a warm atmosphere. The hotel staff is very kind and helpful.

Breakfast was good too and our dinner at their restaurant was simply great.

If you travel to Machu Picchu and want to spend some quality time in Ollantaytambo, we definitely recommend El Albergue. You won't regret!

Barring the fact that it took almost all day for them to get the water running in our room and that the shower went from scalding hot to ice cold sporadically this was a really great place. The environment in this place was amazing. We had dinner reservations and tried the Alpaca which tasted kind of like lamb. The server was new and very sweet. The bartender/manager did a great job of making the experience professional. The artwork was also great and you can buy a t-shirt etc. from the artist. The hotel also arranged our transportation back to Cusco by taxi via Salinas, and Moray for a great price considering it was by a tourist van all to ourselves. The only reason I wouldve stayed anywhere else is that this hotel was connected to the train station and a little outside of the main city square. Due to the limited trains though there was no disturbance as far as noise. OH, and if you ask they will hook you up with the sauna which was really nice at the end of a long day a Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo ruins

Room Tip: great ambience

Right next to the train station with online pictures of a train in the foreground and the hotel in the background we were a bit skeptical and decided to book the first night at a different hotel. After a quick tour of the hotel the next day, we realized there was more here than met the eye. Yes, this is definitely one of the nicer properties in Ollantaytambo and the good restaurant and proximity to the train to Aqua Callientes say this is a smart stay. For dinner we had the Ocopa & Yuca appetizer and local trout with veggies and a four-cheese fettucini - with a Fuzion Shiraz-Malbec for wine - and it was all excellent.

Our room was in the back, quiet, beautiful and clean with very comfortable quality beds. Many moto-taxis are available at the train station to run you up the hill into town and the ruins, i.e., a 10-15 min. walk up a gently sloping street.

Through the hotel we hired a driver, (a bit pricey but safe- you might be able to do better on your own), to take us up into the mountains to the living Inca towns of Willoc and Pattacancha. The drive up the steep dirt road is beautiful and awe inspiring and gives a good idea of the spirit and tenacity of the proud and strong mountain people. (The drive also includes opportunities to stop at local mountain Cooperatives for textiles and rugs.) At the high point in Pattacancha over the ridge is the start of the Amazon.

El Albergue is owned by an international artist from Lima and her work is prominently displayed in the restaurant and hotel. He artistry is also evident in the wonderful rooms of the hotel.

This is good value and should put you in a good mood for the train ride to Agua Callientes and Manchu Picchu.

My husband and I stayed here one night on our way to Machu Picchu. It was recommended to us by a friend of mine and we were not disappointed! We stayed in many fabulous places in Peru, but this one was by far the most charming. The rooms were very comfortable and clean, the food in the restaurant was ...WOW (try the pasta!), the sauna was rustic and relaxing, the service was good, the garden in the back is beautiful overlooking the mountain, and the coffee in the morning was one of the best. Overall- excellent value and would highly recommend this b&b! One last thing to note - the owner is an artist and her work is displayed throughout the property - it made it all the more charming. And ps. it's also environmentally consciously managed which is always a plus.
And while you're here - make sure you walk the cobblestone streets near the town square and climb the mountain to the right (it's a trek uphilll with ruins which is for free and the views of the valley were unreal). the other trek was crowded and touristy..

We stayed here on our way back from Machu Picchu and it was a fabulous place to stay! The food in their restaurant was excellent, the lodging was incredibly cozy, and the free & private wood burning sauna reservations didn't hurt either!

It is a bit odd that the hotel is connected to the train station, but being that we are from NYC, it was actually nice to have the trains going by every once in a while. Don't be concerned if you aren't used to listening to trains, they go by very rarely and make a great old time "choo choo" sound!

I highly recommend this hotel for anyone that wants to stay somewhere mellow and cozy with a nice rustic vibe (while having access to wifi!)
