My wife and I stayed at El Albergue for 4 nights and found the location in proximity to great hiking and walks, and steps from rail peru for connection to machu picchu.

The rooms vary, and we got one with a private bath; and it was beautifully renovated. The bathroom was modern, yet the floors, doors and windows seemed original; and the decor was perfect for an Andes retreat. The art work in the room of the properietor, Wendy Weeks, was not very good; but she did a great job restoring the Inn.

The staff was great, and breakfast options were a nice start to the day in a cozy setting with staff and fellow travelers. The staff certainly goes out of their way to meet any request. We even got a backpack strap sewed up by the wife of a gentlemen who worked for the property. The courtyard is private, and beautifully landscaped.

The rooms are next to a train station, so you will hear the train. I highly recommend the unique accomodations of El Albergue.

I stayed here for two nights with my daughter. Stunning scenery and fascinating history/culture. We just did a day trip to Macchu Picchu from here as Agua Calientes sounded a bit touristy (it was) and that worked just fine. We had no problems but most people recommended getting train tickets ahead of time.
Loved the hotel. Rustic (in the best possible sense) but had everything we needed. Nice warm shower. Breakfast was good. Had dinner there one night at short notice and they accommodated my vegetarian daughter. Staff all very pleasant.
The very best thing about the hotel is the peaceful courtyard with beautiful flowers/plants and hammocks with a backdrop of the Andes. Would definitely recommend. Good value. Trains did not bother us.

We targeted Ollantayambo, as the place to relax and wind up for our trip to Macchu Picchu and then to Bolivia. It was a great place to stay and have as a base camp to see around Ollantayambo as well as the Urubamba valley. The room was clean and cozy with plenty of hot water. We had dinner there on the first night and it was excellent and all the breakfast was good as well. Try the sauna, it is excellent.

My husband and I stayed at El Albergue in Ollantaytambo for two nights, after completing hiking the Inca Trail and visiting Machu Picchu. El Albergue arranged transportation to pick us up at our hotel in Cuzco.
The B&B is right by the train station, but the trains stop running at 9pm, so its nice and quiet at night. Our room was on the second floor, had a nice view on the balcony of the gardens below. Our room was decent size, the beds were great -- the best night sleep I'd had in a week, the shower was hot, good water flow, and nice new tile and sink in the bathroom.
The B&B is a restored 1920's building so it has alot of character, antique doors and windows, and nice simple furnishings.
Breakfast is a nice choice of eggs, yogurt or pancakes. Pancakes with bananas were great. Its an easy 5-10 minute walk into town and the main square. The road is lit at night, so its easy to walk back after dinner in town. However, you can have dinner at the B&B for $10USD -- a decent three-course meal, with the convenience of staying at the B&B.
The staff were very friendly, and helpful. They provided restaurant suggestions and arranging a taxi to take us back to Cuzco airport.
Overall, this was our favorite place to stay in the Cuzco & Sacred Valley area. Definitely will return one day.

Ollantaytambo will always have a special place in our hearts due to the gracious staff and fun location of this hostal. We loved the location of our room with the balcony overlooking the trains and enjoyed watching the comings and goings of the vendors and the passengers. After a long flight from Miami, it was a pleasure to see our names held on a board by the taxi driver sent by El Albergue. Our first impressions of the Peruvian countryside were enhanced by the relaxing drive to Ollantaytambo and helped set the tone for our entire 18 day visit.

I just wanted to add my two cents worth that this was probably the nicest places I stayed in my 3 weeks in Peru. No not the fanciest, but clean, comfortable, friendly, and a nice retreat from the crowds further down the tracks near Machu Pichu and Cusco. Highly recommend!

Just finished reading several reviews, and don't understand why no one commented on the sauna. It was a totally unexpected pleasure. A lovely memory for all the senses, including the scent of eucalyptus leaves.
