“Best Stay in Ollantay”
Reviewed 16 November 2013

Halfway between Cusco and Machu Picchu lies Ollantaytambo. This best preserved Incan style town is relatively quiet and holds the second best Incan ruins in Peru. It’s a great place to catch your breath. El Albergue is known as the nicest accommodation in Ollantay. Incredibly it is literally entered directly from the platform from which the trains depart for Machu Picchu. Surprisingly this does not make it noisy as you might expect. The trains are rather infrequent, arrive only in waking hours, and come into the station at such a slow speed that they really do not make much noise. In fact from a table in either the café or restaurant they simply add unique ambience.

The inn is located a short distance from the center of town. The famous ruins can be reached either by road or by a little travelled Incan path which leads you directly there. The rooms are clean, comfortable and well appointed. We had one of the newer rooms toward the back of the inn. There were comfortable chairs for relaxing on the veranda outside and fantastic views of the mountains.

The restaurant on site is the best in town serving sophisticated renditions of local foods and supplied from its own large organic garden. We spent 2 nights here and could have stayed longer and used it as a base from which to explore the Sacred Valley.

I had concerns about staying in the 'train station', but what a surprise! We arrived on the last train down from Machu Picchu and were greeted by a great surprise. The staff were very helpful - they kept the kitchen open, provided a wonderful meal, AND treated me to a surprise, as it was my birthday. The colonial style room, complete with wooden shutters, heated bathroom floor, great linens, and delightful king bed was a real treat! in the morning, the buffet breakfast was individually prepared to perfection. The lovely garden area included the largest hummingbird I have ever seen. I definately would recommend this hotel.

A great hotel in a fantastic location if you are taking the train from The Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu. Good clean rooms and excellent very helpful staff. Would definitely recommend - and certainly take time to experience dinner in the restaurant, food was exceptional.

The rest of my party of six had reservations about staying at El Albergue especially after i had cancelled at a property which was very up-market in Cusco. However after the first night they were all singing it's praises. The rooms were spacious and clean. The views from our balconies were breathtaking and the food was great. The only train noise we heard was the early morning train starting up. Of course, being at the train station was ideal for our early morning departure for Machu Picchu. Although the restaurant was not yet open, we were given breakfast bags to take with us. This we thoroughly appreciated. My only issue was the hot water which I found very difficult to regulate. Maybe that's b/c we were on the top floor. The others who stayed below had no such issues. We would definitely stay there again as well as recommend it. Many thanks to Sergio and Natalia for arranging our tour guide (Paul) for us.He was simply fantastic and we could see that he really enjoys his job. Thanks Paul for everything...you are invaluable.

After visiting Machu Picchu we stayed at El Albergue. The setting was wonderful-next to the train station from Cusco. The rooms surround a flower-filled patio area brimming with all types of plants. The restaurant served great food and our dinner was accompanied by a harpest who included playing "Happy Birthday" for my wife. The lobby has a small selection of nice tourist gifts. The rooms were large and well furnished and everything was sparkly clean. I recommend this hotel without reservation. But make reservations well ahead as it is popular.

Staying at the train station was a great experiences. Best things - so convenient for catching the train to Machu Picchu, great food, large rooms, fantastic view. Downsides - the station is about a 10 minute walk to the main part of town, the hot water didn't always work, the noise from the trains was quite loud (however they stop from 11pm - 5am). All in all, the good things outweighed the negatives - I would recommend this place to friends. Very relaxing place and a great way to experience the Sacred Valley.

We stayed at El Alberque for 2 nights and WE LOVED IT! Perfect location for visiting Machu Picchu (it's virtually "station house"). Lovely setting, beautiful garden, walking distance from the village and the Ollantaytambo ruins. Excellent food - we enjoyed 2 splendid evening meals and 2 breakfasts in their Peruvian-style restaurant with its pleasant relaxing atmosphere. Great room, clean, loads of hot water. Wifi worked well in the coffee bar. Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. They fixed up transport for us to and fro Cuzco plus a most interesting guided tour to the Pisac ruins & market with a great guide called Paull Palmita (who speaks excellent English and is a mine of information about his beautiful country). We are so-called "seasoned travellers", through the years we have visited over 70 countries. We can thoroughly recommend the Albergue and the whole Peru experience to anyone.
