“Nice, but very pricey”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

We stayed at this hotel for a night. The location is quite novel, given it is right on the platform of a train station.

The rooms are well equipped ( Do not expect TV and other modern facilities). The bed was very comfortable.

The restaurant attached to the hotel serves very good food. We liked the Quinoa soup very much. However, it is pricey too.

Wonderful hotel, restaurant, and service. Room #13 was lovely! I highly recommend the 1/2 day tour from Cusco to Olly and the 1/2 day tour from Olly back to Cusco - great way to see Pisac, Maras, Moray, and Salinas. We loved our driver Eloy.

What initially appealed to me, when making the reservation with El Albergue, was essentially the convenience: it is located inside the station where trains go to Machu Picchu. Nonetheless, it turned out to be much more than I had expected.

Beyond the nonchalant exterior of the building and the most modest reception and lobby area, it opens to a lushly grown garden, which tourists such as myself would learn later is literally a miniature of the fertile lands of Sacred Valley. The room in which I stayed at the back of the hotel for 4 nights in late May, is spacious (and away from the noises at the train station). The deco is minimalist but tasteful, elegant and thoughtful. What’s notable is that, to the end of environmental protection and sustainable tourism, the shampoo, body wash, etc is all in refillable bottles.

After a day of visiting Machu Picchu or touring Sacred Valley, or days of Inca Trail hiking, it was such a blessing sitting on the wooden patio chair outside the back-to-basics room, enjoying the tranquility while appreciating various and exotic plants in the garden.

The restaurant was a pleasant surprise. Rated as the best eating place in town, it’s always busy and crowded during my stay and therefore, understandably advance reservations were needed. Despite being in a small village, the catering team puts lots of thoughts into the menu and the creativity and infusion well known in Peruvian cooking is not lost. Most importantly, most of the ingredients that go to your stomach are from their own organic farm which is just a minute walk behind the hotel! The hotel offers free tours to their farm - I highly recommend that anyone with 15-20 minutes to spare visit the farm.

And, did I mention they make the best Pisco Sour?!

I recently stayed at El Albergue hotel with 12 other people. Personally I loved the hotel but I was lucky enough to get one of the garden rooms in the back. The rooms overlooking the station platforms are cute and charming but on the older side and if you're sensitive to noise, the trains run until midnight, but they do have double windows. Spend extra money to get a garden room especially if you will be there for any length of time as it is just gorgeous out in the back.

When we arrived the front desk seemed overwhelmed by such a large group and took awhile to get us to our rooms. The convenience of having the hotel on the train tracks literally was fantastic as we had an early morning start via train to Machu Picchu so we ate our breakfast and stepped outside and onto the train. The hotel is very clean and nicely decorated and our beds were comfortable with nice down comforters.

The restaurant was a bit overrated. We ate there and paid a high price for small amounts of food that wasn't that fantastic. The breakfast however was very good. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone as long as you are not looking for the convenience and sterility of a Marriott or something like that.

Walk out the door of the El Albergue for your trip up to Machu Picchu and the tracks are 10 feet in front of you. No waiting behind the bars of the station or being there 30 minutes before. Just exit the hotel and enter the train. Rooms are Spartan but clean, breakfast is utilitarian, but dinner is very good and well prepared. Windows are double insulated so you hardly hear late night trains. Very good value for a 3 star in an excellent location.

We took a taxi from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. We stayed one night at El Albergue. The room was nice. The hotel is at the train station. This is perfect for boarding the train to Machu Picchu! They have a restaurant and bar. The pisco sours went down smoothly!

Our superior room no. 11 was very spacious, clean and tidy. It has got a high ceiling which made it difficult to heat up the room with the heater the hotel provided. A second blanket helped though.

The surrounding garden is beautiful. If you want to sleep in, you may be at the wrong spot though... at least for light sleepers that is. The train woke us up at around 5 am and the birds that soon started off did the rest.

Dinner at the restaurant is outstanding. Very good staff, delicious food, live music and a great atmosphere. Breakfast is a slightly different story though. I would rate the breakfast as average. The home made bread did not taste like anything and the fruits did not seem to be very fresh.

We would recommend the El Aalbergue to those who do not mind some noise from the incoming and departing trains. We did not check any other hotels, but believe it is one of the nicest hotels in Ollantaytambo.
