“A great base for Sacred Valley/Machu Picchu”
Reviewed 21 November 2009

We stayed at El Albergue for our first 3 nights in Peru. It's about a 1.5 hr beautiful drive from Cusco. We found the location convenient, as we were taking the train to Machu Picchu our 3rd night. It is an uphill walk into town, which might be tough if you're affected by the altitude- we weren't, so it was fine. It's walking distance to the Ollantaytambo ruins, and we had a car take us about a half hour drive to visit Moray and Maras which were beautiful and worth seeing.

The rooms are spotlessly clean. We stayed in Room 1 on the 2nd floor- no TV or hairdryer like other reviewers said, but we slept pretty early and didn't spend much time in there. Dark plank floors, textiles on the walls, it was very charming and rustic. The food was excellent. We had dinner there twice, and the included breakfast (eggs and toast or pancakes) was delicious and filling. The coffee there was the best we had in Peru. We took their packed lunch to MP, which was a godsend after climbing Wayna Picchu- if you are going on the first train out (5am), you'll need to eat something as you're climbing all over everything and it's exhausting. We ordered room service once (a pressed hot sandwich) which was delicious, and later wished we used the laundry service (it was cheaper than our later hotels.)

The staff was super friendly and helpful in every way. There was wifi, but it wasn't very strong unless you were right next to the office. We were glad we chose this hotel as a base for exploring the Sacred Valley.

Really enjoyed our 1 night here. The location is unbeatable if your only reason from being in Ollantaytambo is to take the train to Machu Picchu the next day. Its literally through the barriers on the train platform - romantic location, packed full of rustic charm, trains arriving and taking off whilst enjoying dinner/coffee etc - gorgeous. Probably once in a lifetime location if you think about it... staying right on a train platform??! Train stop after 8pm so noise isn't an issue at all. We loved sipping a glass of wine on the platform cafe at El Albergue and later had dinner and the last of the trains to and from Machu Picchu passed, great seeing all the passengers delighted with their trips to MP really sets the scene and excitement for your own trip (assuming thats part of your trip to Ollay). The rooms are basic but gorgeous, lovely old shutters on the windows, gigantic 6 foot bed, lovely rustic blankets (duvets just wouldn't sit well in this rustic place!). Ensuite bathrooms has lovely shower, loo and handbasin what more do you want? Tight squeeze but you don't need a huge bathroom do you?! The bedrooms are lovely, original floorboards, very few fittings in the pared back bedrooms and it totally fits with the age of the property. Stripped back walls just simply whitewashed - great! We ate in the restaurant - enjoyed dinner very much. Good value, nice food, attentive, friendly honest and genuine service. (We had same waiter at breakfast at 4.30am next morning - lovely fella). Lluc on the front desk was very nice also - friendly, chatty and genuinely interested in helping with any queries.
We can't complain about this place - we loved it. It has personality and charm we recommend it wholeheartedly. Note - it is about a 10 min max walk from 'town centre' we didn't bother treking back up after walking to hotel as we dined in-house. The best thing is that you are right at the train station for early start next day that beats staying up iin the main area .... just think of that 10 min trek at 4.30 am to catch the train...! No thanks. Great memories, would love to revisit this once in a lifetime type location.

Even tho it is located next to the train tracks, El Albergue is an oasis for travelers in the Sacred Valley. Everything about the hotel is comfortable. We had a delicious meal of homemade pasta and the best pisco sour we had in Peru. If we ever were to return to Peru, we would make this our base for visiting Machu Picchu and all the other sights in the Sacred Valley.

My wife and I stayed at El Albergue for 3 nights in late June in the middle of a 3 week tour of Peru. It was by far our favorite place to stay and we'd go back in a heartbeat. The hotel is cahrming, well-kept historic property dripping with character and a gorgeous and quiet courtyard (a bit surprising considering its location right next to the Machu Picchu train). We also loved the home made, gourmet cuisine at the restaurant on site, the wood-fired sauna, and generally excellent service. I was sick with a bad stomach bug when we arrived, and this place helped nurture my body and spirit. A special note of appreciation for LLuc, Adela and Joaquin for their attention and great service. Worth every penny!

Friends in the UK recommended "the place right on the station platform" to us and we can fully understand why. If Machu Picchu is part of your Peru itinerary, the Albergue makes getting there all-but-painless. On the outbound journey, you really can walk straight from your breakfast table (taking their good-value packed lunch bags with you) to your reserved seat on the train. You skip the half-hour check-in at the Perurail security gate because you're already on the "train side". On the way back, it's even better: you can be sipping your complimentary pisco sour within 5 minutes of the evening train returning from Aguas Calientes and seated in the Albergue's restaurant (after a restorative hot shower and change of clothes) within 15. With luck, you may even find that their eucalyptus-powered sauna has already been fired up, so you can soothe all those tired post-trek muscles before tucking into a delicious alpaca steak and bottle of Chilean merlot... Pity the poor turistas flogging back to Cuzco by bus or train that night (or even walking 600 mts up the unsurfaced track to their hostals in Ollantay village)!

If we didn't end our trip staying at a super chic hotel in Lima, this hotel would have been our favorite of our whole trip.

You can't tell from the oustide entrance of this hotel, but inside is a super cute and charming courtyard where the rooms are found. The hotel staff is perfection! We had an issue with our train tickets, and the next morning when we went to go solve the issue, we found that the hotel manager had already gone to the train station for us -- at 6am!

Don't forget to try their restaurant. We ate here both nights of our stay because it was so convenient and so delicious -- some of the best food on our trip. Try the trout and pastas!!

People have complained about hearing train whistles in the morning. We did not experience this because we were already up at 5:30/6am getting ready for our day. It seems as though most hotel guests were also up at this time. SO if you do plan on sleeping in on your vacation to Peru, then maybe this isn't the place for you. But, most people don't sleep in on their trip to Peru -- we didn't think we'd be getting up at 5:30 in the morning either, but somehow you just end up doing it!!!

Finally, the location is unbeatable if you plan on going from Ollanta directly to MPicchu. The hotel is past security in the train area, which means you don't have to arrive early for your train. Instead, you can pop out and hop right on.

Oh -- one final thought. Fodors commented that this place had "huge" breakfasts. Its just not true. Actually, the smallest on our entire trip. Not a huge deal, but just FYI to all of you out there!
