“Fantastic place to stay!”
Reviewed 25 May 2010

We highly recommend this wonderful hotel--it was by far the nicest and friendliest place we stayed in during our travel in Peru. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, reliable and helpful. We also very much liked our room (spacy and bright, with comfortable, clean bed, hot shower) and the restaurant (the food was excellent and always fresh). Great breakfast, brownies, and pisco sours. The Albergue is a few minutes walk from the center, which we liked very much because that made it quiet and relaxed.

Loved this place. From the start Gabriella was easy to work with via the internet even when it was necessary to change our reservations. When we arrived, Segio met us at the front desk. He was an attentive gentleman with a great sense of humor and greatly improved our stay. We loved our room, the garden area and the restaurant, which served us the best meals we had in Peru. They even arrange transportation from the airport in Cusco ($45) in a private vehicle with a professional driver. Top notch place and a must see town!!!!

We stayed in Ollantaytambo to explore the sacred valley before going to Machu Picchu, This was a great choice. They helped to arrange for drivers to the hotel from the airport in Cusco and we knocked off a few sites on the way to the hotel. The hotel is very well situated right by the rail tracks (or while they are out, about a block away from the shuttle buses that will take you to KM82 to pick up the train to MaPi). The staff was GREAT. Very friendly and alway helpful. They helped us to plan for excursion, whether by walking or with a driver. I wish to give them a very special thank you for helping us with critical information about the trip to machu Picchu at a time when there was so much confusion (we were scheduled to go only one week after the rail to MaPi was opened back up again and there was a lot of misinformation..... they found out everything and made sure we had it all prior to coming to Peru. G, you know who you are, THANK YOU!!) The kitchen was also AMAZING. This I did not expect. we ate so well there, the restaurant would not be out of place in any major city and in fact I'd still go. Freshly made pasta, the Alpaca steak that was one of the most amazing grill jobs, on par with great steak houses. And this all for a very reasonable price. I would definitely go back to this place again!

I have known this hotel almost from its inception and made an early booking to make sure my girlfriend could experience it.
Run by the same family for 30 years, positioned next to the station it is still by far the best hotel in the area,a mixture of old world charm with modern facilities a restaurant making fresh pasta as well as local dishes, spotlessly clean and friendly staff...its a must.

We were most happy to stay at the El Alberque in Ollantaytambo on our way to Machu Picchu. The vllage is wonderful, surrounded by many Inca ruins and the hotel sits right at the railroad station about 300 yards off the main street. Our room was very comfortable, quiet and impeccably clean. The hotel offers a continental breakfast with eggs to order, all of good quality. A eucalyptus enhanced steam room is available by reservation, heated by a wood fire. It is a nice place to "sweat out" the rigors of a day's hiking. Complimentary Pisco sours are served guests nightly. Helpful staff provide answers to travelers questions and a particularly engaging young man named Sergio is cheerful, funny and very, very accomodating. His English skills are excellent and we had a lot of fun with him. We strongly recommend El Alberque as a nice clean place and great value. The evening restaurant is also very good.

Ollentaytambo is the place to connect with the Inca past (ruins, Inca Trails, village life and people) and El Albergue is the place to stay. I always enjoy the colorful enclosed flower garden gazing upon the mountains. The quinoa salad and other chef prepared meals are wonderful. After a day hiking the Inca trail the sauna will feel great. Take the time to make a trip to a remote mountain village observing the villagers daily life. The staff will make you feel welcome helping you enjoy each precious moment. I have stayed twice before and I plan to return again.

the staff is knowledgable, charming and attentive. it is tempting to just stay within the confines of this oasis and disregard the irresisistible immediacy of the local ruins and other attractions. located next to and within a historical train depot, the albergue is a welcome rustic retreat. there is a restaurant--try the alpaca. although not on the menu, the exquisite guinea pig (cuy) and matacuy available on request. i would like to go on and on about finding a special place that is like no other place because the albergue is that and much more.
