We spent three nights at El Albergue last week during our ten day visit to Peru. This property absolutely deserves its accolades. The staff (particularly Sergio) are warm and helpful, the grounds are beautiful, and the rooms are very comfortable. The location next to the railroad tracks is very convenient if you have a dawn ride to Machu Picchu. The flipside of the location is noise: expect to hear it at all hours. We travel with foam earplugs, so after the first night, we were blissfully isolated from the trains various hoots and whistles.

The only other downside to the location is that it puts you on the opposite end of town from the ruins and bustling main square in Ollanta. The walk up is kind of unpleasant because of the traffic, but Sergio showed us a very quiet, serene hidden path behind the hotel that leads all the way up to the ruins. Be sure to ask about it!

We stayed in two different rooms at El Albergue because we didn't plan very far ahead. Our first room was one of the new "superior" rooms, and our second was an older mini-suite. The new room was big and airy, with a brand new bathroom, radiant heating on the floor beside the bed, and a very comfortable bed. Our mini-suite was older and smaller, but set up high and apart from everything else in a way that made it feel like a beautifully decorated tree house. The restaurant, which is listed here separately, has good food and we loved the candlelit ambience at night.

Based on service and charm alone, I'd like to rate El Albergue as excellent. Unfortunately, there are a couple of small problems that might be total deal-breakers for some travelers. On El Albergue's website, they advertise that "all rooms have private bathrooms, free wi-fi and safe". Our first room, the superior room, had no wifi access at all, and no safe. When we inquired, the staff explained that the room was "new", and that it was perfectly secure to leave our things in the room without a safe. Those new rooms have been available for a couple of months; it shouldn't take that long to add basic services that are promised on the website. Our mini-suite was closer to the lobby, so we were able to get a wifi signal most of the time.

One more complaint. We were there three days, and had problems getting enough hot water for brief showers on two of them. Nighttime and afternoon showers are fine, but the hotel couldn't seem to keep up with the pre-breakfast shower rush.

On the whole, El Albergue's a delightful place to stay. If wifi and/or safe are important to you, be sure to mention it when you make your reservation. And if possible, plan your showers around the morning rush.

The service was grand and the food was excellent. We ate trout, chicken, llama, and alpaca, all tender, well accompanied and served with penance. The front desk, with SIr Hito is especially helpful. the location near the bus station and on the train tracks is handy. This is a good place to acclimatize while visiting machu pichu. they have great contacts for guides and drivers and arrange what you need for the Sacred Valley.

My husband and I stayed here for four nights during our honeymoon and had such a wonderful time! The rooms were simple but beautiful with great courtyards to relax in. The staff was so helpful and hospitable. Sergio and Lluc both went out of there way to help us with anything we needed. El Albergue was a beautiful place to spend a few days exploring the Sacred Valley. There is also a wonderful restaurant attached to the hotel where we ate our best meals in Peru. Highly recommended!

We selected El Albegue based on reviews in Trip Advisor and we were not dissappointed. Sergio was very professional and helpful beginning with our on-line reservation. The hotel was very clean and comfortable with a beautiful view. The walk from the square is a bit of a hike, but you can get one of the mini cabs to take you. It is best to book a room in advance as this is not a large hotel. We also dined in the resteraunt and had a very enjoyable meal of Trout and Alpaca. I wish we could have stayed longer. Sergio, we will come back.
