“Serene beauty, peace and tranquility”
Reviewed 15 June 2009

We had been in the jungle for a few weeks and wanted to end our trip with a night of comfort... we weren't disapointed.

The hotel is situated in beautiful gardens and each room has access to a shared balcony or you can find a nice place to sit among the gardens. Mountains surround you on each side and you can see the Inka fortress in the hills. Just two minutes walk to the train station to Matchu Pitchu and 5 in to town.

We ate in the restaurant as altitude sickness prevented a walk to the town - the food was good but probably not the best value. The only other negative was the hotel reception welcome which was unusually officious for Peru - not unfriendly just a bit stuffy, a shame but not a disaster.

If you have a bit of spare cash then upgrade to this hotel

We stayed one night at the Hotel Pakaritampu in Ollantaytambo during a two-day Sacred Valley tour. After a longer than expected drive down a narrow street that led from the Plaza de Armas to the train station, we were pleasantly surprised when we pulled into the courtyard of our hotel.

The rooms are arranged in beautiful little houses around a lovely lawn with flowers and alpacas. They have the feeling of somewhat fancy nice wooden cabins - that kind of upscale rustic look. During the day, the mountains provide a beautiful backdrop to the hotel. The room was clean, large, and fairly basically furnished with two twin beds pushed together to make a very large king, wood furnishings, and a beautifully tiled bathroom with a shower stall that had nice hot water and water pressure (though our friends in a different building had hot water issues and less water pressure, so it might be room-dependent). There were several balconies accessible from the hallways with chairs and tables from which to take in the scenery.

We ate at the hotel for dinner since it was a bit late and we didn't feel like walking back to town (some of the guidebooks make the hotel look closer to the Plaza de Armas than the train station, but I'm pretty sure it was the opposite, though still walkable). The food was fine if a tad expensive, and served in a nice big wood dining room. Breakfast was included, and served in the same room, and was a decent spread with breads, cakes, fruits, yogurt & cereal, and juices. There was internet available though the cost was a bit higher than the internet cafes I had used thus far, so I didn't use it and can't comment on it.

I wouldn't have minded having more time to spend at the hotel (we left early the next morning to continue our Sacred Valley tour). It's not as close to town as the Hostal Sauce (which we passed going to and from this hotel) but it was a lovely, comfortable hotel, and I'd recommend it.

We stayed at the Pakaritampu twice both before and after our visit to MP. The hotel is cute and comfortable. The rooms are simple but comfortable. We ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was good. It look forever to get a drink but the food came reasonably fast. They seemed to have lost our reservation for the second night which was odd since I confirmed by email and when we checked in the first time. Luckily it was not a problem since the hotel was not full. Ask for a room on the second floor since it is all wood flooring I imagine it can be a problem downstairs. Allow a little time to relax in the gardens if you can.

Pakaritampu Hotel has lush landscaping and comfortable, quiet spacious rooms.
A few blocks from the plaza, Pakaritampu is convenient to town and is a 3 minute walk to the train and bus station. Use their telescope to find the Southern Cross. The resident llamas are adorable. Great breakfast. Living room available to guests with fireplace.

This hotel has a beautiful setting with llamas roaming the grounds, flower gardens throughout the area. It has the feeling of a lodge more than a hotel. The rooms are large and tastefully decorated. The breakfast room was very cozy. They have a TV room and reading room also, although we did not use either. The staff was very helpful. We were not able to get to the hotel on the first night as the farmers had rocks in the road and on the train tracks protesting water rights. The hotel did not charge us for the first night that we were unable to get there. We would have loved to spend 2 nights here though. The location to the train station is perfect, like one block. It is the closes hotel to the station. The rooms were quiet. I would stay here again without any hesitation.

We only stayed at the Pakaritampu for one night, but we enjoyed it. The grounds are lovely. The bed was a bit small, but the rooms were adequate and clean.
We had a great meal in the hotel's restaurant, and took advantage of the happy hour discount of 50% off drinks. (Pisco sours...mmmmm.)
The location right next to the train station was great, since we had a 5:30 a.m. train to Machu Picchu.
The front desk staff was helpful and happy to hold our luggage while we were at Machu Picchu. They also helped us pack up a tasty breakfast to go at 5 a.m. for our train ride.

All the wonderful things noted in the other reviews about this hotel are spot on. The grounds are spectacular, the flowers in the gardens reminiscent of an English country estate. Well insulated rooms with comfortable beds, the photos don't do them justice because the color scheme makes them look like scout camp... Location is 75m's from the train station (but you won't be bothered by the train noise), and a 10 minute walk to the town square or the Ollantaytambo ruins. Breakfast buffet had quite an assortment of food. Dinner was good, with prices comparable to what you'd expect of Lima (or Houston for that matter). They have 3 alpacas (penned in a corner of the property) that they let out in the morning to greet the guests going to breakfast. There are also lawn chairs to sit and enjoy the gardens.

On our first night there our room's hot water didn't work. The staff was very apologetic and let us use the shower in an adjoining room while they fixed the problem. Service to our room was restored a few hours later.

We had purposely scheduled 3 days in Ollantaytambo to be able to absorb the feeling of the place. Staying at Pakaritampu allowed us to enjoy the town but still be able to spoil ourselves by returning to an oasis of calm and comfort. Ironically, the fact that internet use cost US$1/hour was also a good thing as it made us less inclined to check our email and focus on enjoying Ollantaytambo instead.
