“Apu Lodge Wonderful place and people”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2013

We stayed at the Apu Lodge last week for two nights. It was very nice, the breakfast was good and the people were wonderful. The views from the lodge are great and there is easy access to the ruins in Ollantaytambo. There are great things to do and see there including catching the train to MP and the staff was very helpful with planning and information.

I connected with Apu Lodge a good 8 months before our trip to Peru and they very helpful with suggestions and working out details of my plans. We booked two rooms at the time, confirmed them a month before our trip and scheduled the final tours. Amy, Ruth and Louise were delightful hosts, along with several other volunteers and staff helping out around the lodge. Accommodations were simple, but clean and well presented. Everything we set up in advance and agreed upon via email occurred without a glitch. Amy had scheduled Roni, a taxi service in Ollantaytambo and Elvis, an English language guide, to meet us at the Cuzco airport - and they were waiting. Elvis was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and concerned about our adjustment to the higher altitude of Cuzco. Roni was a superb driver, immaculately dressed and kept his car very clean - he made us feel welcome and helped us with our connection to Apu Lodge once in Ollantaytambo. Amy and Louise were happy to make recommendations for restaurants and for adjustments to our touring plans while staying at Apu Lodge. Elvis and Roni also drove us touring our second day to Moray terraces, Salinas de Maras - the salt flats - and to the ruins at Chinchero. They were both consummate professionals and I cannot praise them enough. Apu gladly stored our luggage during our overnight to Machu Picchu, helped us with some tips regarding catching the train and put out a great early breakfast for us before we left. Amy arranged for Alberto, a native of Ollantaytambo, to guide us around the town and through the ruins. Alberto was well spoken, thoroughly knew his material and was most gracious. He helped us arrange a cuy lunch and even had us sample Chicha! Finally, we said farewell and Apu had arranged Jesus to drive us to our hotel in Cuzco via Pisac market and the ruins. He did very well, helped us to get an English speaking guide at the ruins and even found our hotel - it seemed to be a bit out of the way - with little difficulty. We would definitely stay in Apu again when in Ollantaytambo and heartily recommend this to any travelers. One very slight warning: while water pressure was good, the hot water did run out a couple of times when many guests decided to take showers around the same time. The breakfasts were simple, but plentiful, the hosts gracious and concerned, the surrounding amazing - in my opinion, it was excellent!

Gorgeous, relaxing setting with a friendly Scottish host who is well informed about nearby treks, train logistics, and recommendations. She serves a delicious breakfast and will also prepare early breakfast (0400) and/or a bag lunch for travelers to Machu Picchu. The hotel has beautiful grounds framed by the mountaintops as well as a cozy den that is inviting. the train station Is easily accessible. There are nearby hikes that leave practically from the backyard. Wonderful stay for me and my daughter!

We had a very pleasant experience at Apu Lodge. The hostal is comfortable, with great views and lots of light. Optional space heater was oh-so welcome. Great bedding. Nice hosts and pleasant fellow travelers. We had some trouble with hot water, but that's something that was beyond the managers' control. They did try their best to rectify the situation, including issuing a small token of monetary apology at the checkout. Overall, nice neat hostel--we'd stay again.

Traveling with the family we tend to tone it down a bit. This place was $160 for 2 rooms with breakfast and we loved it. Clean, comfortable, with a hearty breakfast: I can honestly say I left there breathless (possibly because of the altitude). Would definitely stay here again

This was the best sleep we had had in South America for the last 5mths. The Lodge is only a short walk from the main plaza thorough delightful cobbled streets. They staff had organised a taxi for us when we arrived from the Train, and the guy was very helpful with carrying out luggage to the Lodge. I would recommend this place as a great option in Ollantaytambo. The bed was very comfy and the water hot! The only downside to our room was it was downstairs which meant there wasnt much light and it was very cold in the day. At night the room seemed a bit warmer, so I dont know what that was about. No internet in the rooms either but it worked find in the dining area which was sufficient and frankly South America isnt great for the internet. We enjoyed the breakfast with home made museli and eggs and would come back here again at the drop of a hat. Thanks Ruth and Louise for the great say, as well as the couple from Holland who are currently working there....

Room Tip: Try to book an upstairs room if you can. Theres more light up there due to the windows and Im sure i...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Apu Lodge. Yes, there is a walk from the square but visitors to the Sacred Valley should plan on doing a lot of walking. I found the location ideal. Away from the crowds with the lovely, soothing sounds of nature and a beautiful garden to enjoy. The staff was very helpful. We had the family room which had very comfortable beds and soft sheets. Above all, I can't imagine a better view of the ruins and surrounding mountains.
