“Very friendly staff, best in Ollantaytambo”
Reviewed 4 December 2013

Before we arrived the hotel helped us arrange a taxi from the airport for a good price. We decided to head straight to Ollantaytambo from the airport to acclimate to the high altitude for a night before heading to Machu Picchu. It was a bit a of a walk from where the taxi dropped us off, but not too bad. When we arrived the woman there was very friendly and offered to cook us some eggs and toast. The room was comfortable and the showers were hot, but the wifi did not reach our room, so we had to go to the common area to access it. They let us leave our luggage for the two days we were gone to Machu Picchu, which is convenient because it is hard to take a large bag on the train there. They even arranged for the taxi driver to pick us up again at the central square with our luggage already in hand when we arrived back. All in all, we felt very welcomed here and would love to stay here again if we ever return.

They arranged taxi for us.They met us at the curb to transport our bags. It was an oasis when we arrived! The staff was very friendly, the building and grounds were perfect. They had great recommendations for restaurants. We had only been there a few minutes before my companion stated they'd like to stay longer!

Apu lodge, at the end of a cobblestone lane in complete silence, a lovely lodge with kind and caring staff.ask beforehand to have help with your suitcases.from the lodge and the rooms you have wonderful scenery. Every where you look. The rooms are simple and clean with modern bathrooms with hot water. Was I glad I stayed here the 3 nights and not Aquas Calientes which is a busy, noisy, touristy place which has prices double that of Ollantaytambo.A coffee , 10 sol !there is a very good restaurant at the end of Apu lodge lane, ask the name . Ruth, who is a local girl, helped me with all my questions, and also bought my MP entrance ticket for me months before.she also arranged a driver to pick me up at cusco airport, very safe, Rolando.
But, on my way back to Cusco as Rolando was busy, It was Ruth's husband who took me, Reynaldo. I asked for a visit to Moray and Salinas on the way, was I glad, it's absolutely the best scenery here( apart from MP), and Reynaldo told me all the local customs and stories, he was very knowledgable and kind.A trip not to be missed.

All in all one of the best holiday weeks of my life. thank you Apu lodge.

Room Tip: Maybe the upstairs rooms are quieter due to the wooden floors.

Apu Lodge is a mid-size B&B in a garden and peaceful setting that needs a 7 minute walk on cobblestones from the corner of the Plaza de Armas in Ollantaytambo. Our room with a double bed is spacious and simply decorated. Portable heater was provided for our visit in September. Special thanks to Ruth for her friendliness and assistance.
During our 3 night stay, the hot water and the breakfast were OK. However, we found that the amenities were basic, for example, a small soap was provided for our entire stay and the slow wifi was only available in the front desk area.
The train station to Machu Picchu is 20 minute walk away or you may take a economy taxi (tuk tuk) from the Plaza for 2 soles per person. The Ollantaytambo Fortress is within walking distance.
The lodge responded our inquiries promptly and arranged a Cusco airport pick-up which was late on our arrival with sightseeing stops en-route at a reasonable rate.
Our suggestions : Apu Lodge is good for short stay (2 nights max ?). Request upstairs rooms and bring your own reliable alarm clock.

We stayed at the Apu Lodge 3 nights. When we arrived in Ollantatambo, we were surprised to learn that the Lodge was at the end of a long cobblestone walkway. Our luggage was transported to the Lodge in a cart powered by a 3-wheeled bicycle. It was all rather charming. The Lodge itself is simply but pleasantly furnished. The atmosphere is casual. The reception area is in part of a large common room with tables and chairs (also used for breakfast), a small sitting area next to a fireplace and book shelf/library. Our room was clean, simple and pleasant, with a terrific view of the Ollantatambo ruins. The queen-sized bed was very comfortable. There were plenty if blankets on the bed, including a comforter. The hot water tap in the shower was a little finicky but we had good hot showers. WIFI was a bit of a challenge. I could not get it in the room and it was “hit and miss” in the common area depending on where I was sitting. Breakfast was included in the price and was very basic (eggs on request, bread, fruit, granola and coffee). The owner was pleasant and friendly. Overall, I would recommend this charming hotel if you are going to stay in low key Ollantatambo. If you book a room here, be prepared to pay in cash (only good, untorn US bills or Soles accepted), and keep in mind that there are only 2 cash machines in Ollantatambo. Also, if you are taking the train to Machu Picchu, the train station is about a 20 minute walk away.

Lovely 1 night stay in Oct 13. The owner is from Scotland and has lived in Ollantaytambo for 10 years - building this place from scratch. Very friendly and helpful staff - all speak good English. Good breakfast of cereal, eggs and bread - and will get it ready early if you need it. We had an amazing room - 3 singles and 1 double bed for 2 of us ! Lovely clean room, sheets and towels. Boiling hot showers, lovely gardens and views of the ruins. It is down a lovely narrow footpath with Inca walls and a little stream flowing along the side. Would love to have stayed longer.

Making arrangements for our stay through emails with Apu Lodge was incredibly smooth and easy. Questions were answered promptly and thoroughly. They arranged a driver to meet us early in the morning when we arrived at the Cusco airport and transport us to Ollantaytambo. He was very pleasant and after reading so many descriptions of the drivers in Peru, we were pleased to feel safe in his care:) The driver took us to the small town square and someone from the lodge met us with a bicycle cart to help us get our luggage there. Altho we only had one suitcase each, the lodge is a short walk down the narrow, cobblestone streets and dragging luggage would have been a pain!
After almost 24 hours of planes and taxis, walking into the charming courtyard of Apu was delightful. The landscaping was beautiful, the reception from the staff and the offer of coffee/tea much appreciated! They continued to be helpful with any sort of questions and with recommendations for the three nights we stayed with them.
Breakfast was simple but sufficient-granola, wonderful yogurt, fresh fruit, local breads, eggs, coffee, tea. Filtered water for your use was a great convenience. Plenty of books to browse and a notebook full of comments and suggestions from former travelers.
We actually stayed in three different rooms for the three nights we were there! The first night we were downstairs but asked to be moved to the second floor because of the view. Also turns out that when someone on the second floor happens to be leaving early, it sounds like they are square dancing above you, so opt for the top floor! After being gone to MP for a night (and they are happy to store your luggage) we returned to yet another room for the final night. When it was time to leave, they once again "bicycled" our luggage to the square to meet our driver.
I would absolutely stay here again. We loved the entire feel of Ollantaytambo-so quiet and peaceful compared to other cities we visited in Peru. Just remember it is not luxury-if you need that I'd be looking elsewhere. The rooms were basic, there was hot water, the furnishings were adequate but it certainly wasn't five star. But the views and the staff were incredible!

Room Tip: Opt for the second floor!
