“Two Thumbs Up”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

You cannot go wrong by staying here. It's a very nice and comfortable place to stay in Ollantaytambo.

The room and bathroom were nicely decorated, bright and clean. I had a room on the ground floor that opened into a beautifully maintained garden. When I opened the door in the morning, I could see the sunlight hitting the mountains in the distance; One morning, the moon was also still out right next to the peak of one mountains; It was very beautiful.

One great thing about the lodge was the promise that hot water will always be available. The shower had very good pressure. It was very nice to be able to have a hot shower in the evening after a long day of trekking and/or climbing.

The staff was extremely nice. Zed and Louise checked in me, and they were both very friendly and welcoming. I'm pretty much a fuss free traveller, but I'm sure if I had requested or needed anything they would have tried to accommodate it. The other staffs also seemed very nice, but I didn't get a chance to deal much with them.

I stayed for 2.5 days and wished I had alloted at least 1 more full day To Ollantaytambo and at the lodge. It really was a neat place to stay. Make sure you do wander the cobbled alleys of the city in the morning and afternoon to see people going and coming home from work.

note:
It can feel like a relatively long walk on cobbled stones to get to the lodge, depending on how tired you are ;) . If you have big luggage(s) with wheels then you might want to arrange with the lodge beforehand to have a pick-up.

Our room at Apu Lodge was spacious, comfortable, and peaceful, with plenty of hot water for showering and a very tasty breakfast served up. This alone would qualify a high rating but what really impressed us was how helpful and accommodating the Scottish owner Louise was. When a problem arose regarding our over-sized luggage that we had intended to carry with us to Machu Picchu (not knowing about luggage restrictions and lack of left luggage facilities for Inca Rail in Ollantaytambo) Louise made several phone calls to the Inca Rail office in Cusco, gave helpful advice and lots of reassurance. As a result, we were able to take our duffle bag and backpacks on the train! The Inca sites in Ollantaytambo are fantastic so we recommend staying there a night or two and choosing Apu Lodge.

We really enjoyed Apu Lodge, truly felt like I was transported back in time. It was a great way to start our vacation (May 2013). The hotel landscape was jaw-droppingly beautiful, and a fabulous way to ease into the Sacred Valley. Ollanta is a great stop before Machu Picchu (acclimitizing) and it is much lovelier than Aguas Calientes.

Location: Apu Lodge is located on the north east corner of the quaint little town. It is at most a 5 minute walk to the center of town, 10 minutes to the Ollanta ruins, 15 min to the train to Macchu Picchu. Cusco transfer is less than two hours, and the train to Machu Picchu approximately 1.5 hours. The roads are all cobblestoned so it is a bit tough to drag your suitcase. They do have carts to transport them.

Rooms: The rooms are tidy, clean and spacious. Beds were comfortable. Overall the room decor was simple. Our room happened to face out towards the town with views of the ruins. The only small trouble we had were with some small bugs that hung out on the ceiling of the bathroom but were not bothered by it. Internet was a bit unreliable when I visited, but functions well in the gathering area.

Service: We received phenomenal service from a group of enthusiastic and friendly volunteers. Before we arrived, I had easy helpful correspondences arranging everything from transfers for Cusco, to booking Machu Picchu + train tickets. The payments I made were through Western Union, which was a small hassle but seems to be a standard through South America.

*** The morning of Machu Picchu, we woke at 4am and found our continental breakfast laid out nicely with a packed lunch (prepurchased). The 5am train was perfect so we could be at Aguas Calientes by 6:30 and onto the bus up the mountain early enough to watch the sun peek over the mountains and the clouds clear over the ruins.

The hotel is at the end of one of Ollantaytambo's tiny, cobbled, pedestrian-only, lanes. It is beautifully set and exceptionally peaceful. The room was spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was nice. Packed lunches were an option we chose twice. They were basic but fine. The owner and staff were wonderful in helping arrange a horseback trip to see the Inca quarries on the other side of the river. Really went out of their way to make our stay terrific. We, too, had trouble with hot water for the showers. It ran hot for a short bit and then turned ice cold. Solar water heaters anyone? The other surprise was that it was the only hotel on our trip that charged at extra 4% if one used a credit card to pay. I have no memory of seeing that anywhere on the booking information.

Room Tip: My guess is that from the second floor one can see the temple ruins. We asked for one but didn't...

Spent two nights here in order to go to Machu Picchu. The hotel is in a nice setting and I had high hopes. But after a long day hiking the mountain at Machu Picchu, what I really wanted was a hot shower. Unfortunately at 9pm at night, the shower was ICE cold. Not even a hint of warmth. And there was no one in reception at that time to ask about it. We were dirty and sweaty from the climb and we both took short but very cold showers. It wasn't pleasant. The next morning, the showers were warm.

I am so sorry that your shower was cold when you arrived from Machu Picchu, as I know how important hot water is to our guests and usually our showers are fantastic, very hot and very powerful, but we do have the occasional glitch. I am glad you got a hot shower the next day and would have been happy to give you a good discount on your bill because of the problem at night.

Although the receptionist goes off duty at 9pm, our night watch person is an expert in maintenance and would have been very willing to fix any problems with your room or the hot water. It may not have been clear during your stay that he was available and so as a result of your review, we have put more information in the rooms and in reception so that in the future guests can know just to knock on the kitchen door off reception if they require assistance when no-one is on reception.

We try to make our guests' stay as comfortable as possible and hope that they will let us know as soon as they can if anything is amiss or we can help in any way.

Great option to sleep before going to Machu Pichu. Good value for money, comfortable bed and clean. Breakfast is included. Located walking distance from the plaza de armas and arqueological site. From the garden you can get amazing view of the sky full of stars.

This is perfect way to inject yourself into Ollantaytambo, a living Inca city. Louise and her staff are very friendly and helpful, the rooms are very comfortable, and what you read about the showers is true! Unlike the backpacker hostels, this is a few minutes from the central plaza, right up against the mountains. Many people make Ollantaytambo a stopover on the way to Machu Picchu; for me it was a destination so it was important to find a place like this to relax.
