“Bugs and garbage in room...”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

We stayed here on as part of a tour. This was on our honeymoon. We got a room with two single beds which was the first let down. Then in the bathroom there was trash in the shower, which was obviously not cleaned. There were also dead bugs in the bathroom which is disgusting. Not happy at all and unfortunately have to be here 3 nights.

Hotel Munay Tika is located adjacent to the river in Ollantaytambo and within easy walking distance to restaurants, cafés and shops. It's only a very small, yet beautiful, town and everything is pretty much within easy walking distance. The street the hotel is located on seemed quite busy with people and vehicles so it could be noisy if you had a street facing room. We stayed here as part of our Intrepid Inca Trail tour (GGTA) and so didn't have much choice about choosing this place. Overall it was a very unsatisfactory stay and I would choose to stay here again and cannot recommend it. Not sure why Intrepid have chosen this hotel because for the price of the GGTA tour you would expect much, much better quality and there must be better value options in Ollantaytambo - surely!

The good: it's close to the main attractions of the town and the river. There is a nice view of the valley at the back of the hotel and breakfast was good, the pancakes were nice. The mattress on the bed was comfortable if not a little small, and wifi worked OK.

The bad: the bathroom, whist it looked renovated recently-ish (in an odd black decor), was dirty and stank of urine from previous guests. There was mould all over the shower door, the drain didn't drain and water pressure was abysmal. The toilet cistern was faulty and water dribbled and ran all night meaning we had to turn the toilet off at the wall. The floorboards were broken in places (my neighbour fell through his floor) and the room was cramped with inadequate storage space. The reception and breakfast staff were standoffish and a bit surly.

The worst aspect was the noise though. We unfortunate to be there when there were a large group of high school students also staying. They made a huge amount of noise and the staff didn't bother to quieten them down or control them, making for a disturbed and restless night.

Also, we gave our passports to the the reception staff member to copy and were advised to collect them a little later after dinner. When we returned the whole groups' passports were just sitting on the reception desk for anyone to take and there were about a thousand high school kids just milling around in the foyer area. This was an incredibly disappointing lapse in security and any of our groups passports could easily have been stolen.

Overall I cannot on good faith recommend this hotel. We didn't get much sleep because of the noise which adversely impacted on our Inca Trail trek the next day. The room was woefully substandard compared to previous hotels we had a stayed in and in consideration of the prices they charge. Look elsewhere !

Value for money score 3/10

Had originally booked this hotel for only one night but soon after arriving I cancelled my other reservations and planned to stay here again when I returned from MP. Clean rooms, some with some great views, helpful and friendly staff. Way above what I expected for the price. Stayed here on and off throughout my trip and would highly recommend to any of my friends traveling there.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to main office have best wifi but really enjoyed #303 with excellent view but out of wi...

After a tiring day at Machu Picchu, we trained to Ollanta for a stopover, as the train from there to Cuzco was out of order. Lugging our gear from the station, we shortly found an unassuming entrance to this hotel and rang the bell. Continuing surprises inside as we were warmly welcomed, shown to a comfortable room with hot shower, and provided with a portable heater for the night. The next morning we had a bountiful and tasty breakfast in a breakfast room with a chef taking orders for pancakes and eggs, and spent some time wandering about the lovely garden replete with many flowering trees and hummingbirds. Would have stayed longer had our itinerary permitted. Oh, and the price was stunningly attractive!

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor room facing the garden

Stayed here as part of a tour. This was the overnight hotel before we started our Inca Trail trek. The room we had was upstairs. It was large but pretty basic. Bathroom was okay, enjoyed a nice hot shower which was going to be my last for a few days. Breakfast was adequate. I guess most people staying there would only be doing so for a night or two - nothing long term. Wi fi was good in the reception. The hotel is easy walking distance to the centre of Ollantaytambo and has a couple of restaurants close by. The hotel had a nice feel to it - this could be because most of the travellers staying here were anticipating their trip to Machu Picchu.

Homey and basic but also clean and comfortable with very friendly and helpful staff. What you get is great for the price and they handled our group of 14 with no problems. The breakfast room is bright and clean and the food tasty and filling but not fancy. It is good basic fare.
Toilet facilities and showers were better than many and the place was quite charming with good amenities for this style of hotel. The location is good and it is not far to the main square where there is some shopping as well as near the train and a short walk to the ruins and the crafters market. You could not ask for much more at such a good price.

Room Tip: Most of the rooms are very adequate and of standard quality. Further back in the hotel might be a bi...

"Munay Tika" means "beautiful flower" in the Quechua language. This hotel is aptly named because of the lovely open courtyard linking the front lobby with the rooms in the back. It is full of beautiful flowering trees. We stayed there two nights. This is not what I would call a fancy hotel, but it has everything one needs for comfort! Our room was in the front and faced Avenue Ferrocarril, but traffic noise was not a problem like I thought it might be. Instead, it was an advantage, as we could watch the local people going about their business and could see the rushing brook across the street. The breakfast, cost included, was very good. The cook made our eggs to order on the spot, and there was always plenty of fresh fruit. The staff were very helpful, hooking us up with someone to do our laundry and with a private car to take us to Cusco at a very good price. Munay Tika is just about a ten-minute walk from the train to Machu Picchu. I'd be happy to stay there again some day.
