“GREAT LOCATION. BEAUTIFUL. DECEPTIVE BILLING PRACTICE.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 December 2013

Our week in Peru was awesome. The Peruanos are wonderful people. We spent three nights at this resort. It is off the normal route, of the way, quiet, and was a beautiful hacienda converted into a first class resort. The hotel was easy to get to, despite its remoteness... about 10 minutes from Urubamba by taxi, in the country. You can get a Taxi from Cusco or Ollaytatambo for about 80 (at the MOST!) soles, approx. $30 USD including tip. Everyone we met and employees at the hotel went out of their way. The food is excellent but a bit overpriced. Watch out on the bill (the billing is deceptive). Pay with cash, not a credit card. There is a "tax" which is actually a service charge of 10%. You will not see this explained anywhere. I asked if this was a government tax and they tried to evade the question, but, when they finally answered, told me it was used to pay the employees and not a government mandated tax. I had already been tipping 20%, unaware of this charge. They finally took it off after I refused to pay it. This would not stop me from going back.

Room Tip: We had a really quiet suite on the river. Spend the money and get an upstairs suite. Ours was 201. R...

After an all day drive from Cusco through the Sacred Valley, arriving at this property was anticlimactic, until they opened the huge wooden access doors and driving into the front of the hotel. WOW! It literally took my breath away. The check- in was totally painless, the guided tour to the suite was informative and appreciated, and the first impression of the room was OMG! and it remained that way the two nights we stayed. Great dinner, substantial breakfast, impeccable service, outstanding SPA services and staff, beautiful grounds, and simple, no stress check out. If there were one place I would return to in Peru, this would be the place. Unbelievable!!!

Room Tip: Be prepared to be pampered!

Writing the review now as having a tough time falling asleep after being woken up by the front desk at midnight to see if someone was using the jacuzzi(?). With a 530 AM wake up call, don't understand what they were thinking. Perhaps they noticed how noisy the heating and cooling system was and wanted to fix it in the middle of the night.
The grounds are nice, many lovely flowers. The room is generous sized. Food was served with a smile, the limited menu was only ok and was told by the waiters to give tips in cash.
Sadly 2 evenings running the room was loaded with tiny Mosquitos. Hundreds to thousands. This in spite of the windows being taped sealed at my request after the first night as I noticed large gaps due to lack any sealant strips. Appreciated they vacuumed them out instead of using an insecticide before bedtime. But that doesn't make this a high grade hotel.

We spend 3 great nights at Aranwa sacred Valley Hotel in a 2nd floor Junior Suite with high ceiling and huge bathroom wiht jacuzzi tub. Wow! The landscaping is lush and the chapel is very beautiful. The resaurants were first class with excellent food and service. This is a very special place. Don't worry as you take the dirt road in from the highway, even the front gates and entrance are special.

Spent one night at Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel with a tour. I was leary when our guide told us that our hotel had been changed and "upgraded." Sounded like a line, at the time. But this was the absolutely the most beautiful grounds and setting for a hotel that I have ever seen! True, it was a couple of miles from "town" but there can't be much in Urubamba that wasn't available at this amazing property - and all of it seemed to be open until 10 PM.
We arrived to a specially arranged demonstration by talented craftswomen on dyeing, spinning, weaving wool. The gardens, water features, museum, chapel etc. kept me busy exploring and photographing for a couple of hours. We had been warned about the bugs - told to be sure to close the windows and turn out your lights when you left the room. This kept my room perfectly bug-free, but others had to have staff come in and vacuum the bugs up - which took, reportly, 45 minutes.
I believe that I heard some complaints about slow or broken wifi signals. I went to the business center and their internet connection on those PCs was inconsistant. I wasn't able to connect to Google, but another person was able to do so.

In addition to the huge jacuzzi tub and oversized room, I have to mention the heated towel rack. Was a luxurious treat. And the resident, friendly tabby cat was a fun addition to the ambiance of the grounds, for me, a cat lover.

Our dinner was not hearty and rather mundane, but the breakfast was extensive and delicious.

Room Tip: They are all nice, but a hike to dining and reception. Plan on stairs.

We stayed in the thick-walled old section of the hotel and that alone made our stay special. The room was spacious and very nice in all respects. The food in the restaurant was fine as were the Pisco Sours we had in the bar. But there are two especially wonderful aspects of this hotel. First, the complex itself is beautiful - the landscaping, ponds and bridges etc. I took dozens of photos of pretty scene after pretty scene just walking around the various sections of the complex. Second, there is so much to see besides the spacious room and gorgeous landscape. There is the original family chapel, the orchid greenhouse, the photo gallery, the "museum", and lovely art and antique furniture everywhere. We did not take advantage of the health spa but the list of offerings and the facility all seemed impressive. The only negative comments I can offer is that the complex is large enough that one can easily get lost and there was not a lot of good signage. My wife and I were not the only guests who ended up wandering around a lot trying to find our way! But on the other hand, the place is so beautiful being lost for a while gave me a chance to take a lot of photos.

Room Tip: The old section (the original hacienda section) was "special" for us and I think would be...

How often do you have the opportunity to stay in a hotel with llamas wandering around extremely beautiful grounds? And that's not the only special thing about this property.

Here are a few tips:
If you're staying in a Colonial Room, ask for the second floor. The ceiling is vaulted and makes the room even lovelier.
Bring bug spray. And if you're going during October, make sure the room has been sprayed for bugs before you accept it. There are lots of tiny flies at this time of year.
Definitely try the Passion pisco sour. It's especially delicious.
If you need/want alpaca scarves, the stores have good quality at surprisingly fair prices.
One important note: if you don't want seclusion, stay somewhere else. While especially lovely, this hotel is not close to anything except natural beauty.

And if you can afford it, try a River Suite. Beautiful. Spacious. And a real fireplace.

Room Tip: In the "cheap" rooms, ask for the second floor. The ceilings are vaulted and it gives the...
