Me and my husband have been travelling for two weeks in Peru and we were staying in several 5 star hotels all around the country.
I really hev to write a review about this place because our stay was absolutely outstanding.
The hotel itself is extremely peaceful and relaxing. Situated just next to a river, it is perfectely calm and the scenery is breathtaking.
The staff of the hotel is very friendly and the breakfast was providing a great range of very high quality products.
But the main reason why I will never forget this heavenly place is the perfect surprise birthday dinner they organised for me and my husband. I contacted the hotel a couple of weeks before to ask them to organise a private romantic dinner just for the two of us, but I would never imagine how perfect it would be.Thanks to Ms. Miriam Challco (who was in charge of the organisation) we will never forget this wonderful evening. From the moment I met her, I could feel that she would do whatever it takes, to make the birthday surprise unfogettable.
The first inexpected surprise was that we had an uprade to the orchidee villa which ist absolutely stunning. It's huge with several beedrooms, a modern but yet typical decorated living room with an open fire place and a stunning view over the garden and the river.
In the evening while we were having a drink at the bar of the hotel restaurant, they were preparing secretely the living room of our villa with a very romantic decoration including lampions and candles everywhere. They made a fire at the fire place and set up the table like in a high end restaurant. Then we had a six course menu which was excellent. The ingredients were perfectely assembled, the whole menu was very well balanced and the fish as well as the meat coocked to perfection. Our personal waiter Gilmer couldn't have been nicer. He was very proffessional, explaning us the dishes and giving us precious information about the country and the culture and
at the same time he was extremely friendly.
During the dinner there were two musicians (one playing a violon and one a traverse flute) playing classical love songs.
After the dessert we were finishing the evening in front of the fire place with one more sweet courtesy: chocolates and chocolate-covered strawberries!
This evening will be forever in our memories.
Muchissimas gracias!

This hotel hidden behind an unimpressive wall opens into the most amazing and beautiful setting.
A wall of flowers leads you to a building set on a hillside overlooking the river as it meanders through the Sacred Valley.
A llama or alpaca may be seen grazing on the lush but well tended lawns. Deck chairs or a hammock strung between trees invite you to stop and watch the Torrent Ducks as they swim effortlessly against the flow.
The rooms are beautifully decorated to allow maximum light and blend into the landscape so cleverly covered in bushes and foliage. The mountains all around make this a majestic sight.
Our shower had a glass roof so it was just like having a shower in a mountain waterfall.
There is only one TV in the reception but if you want they will supply a DVD and screen to your room.
The restaurant was clean and the buffet breaks fast will meet all tastes. The dinner was excellent and the service first class.
We found this to be a first class place to stay and relak

Room Tip: We had a mountain view room

Dear Guest,

We would like to thank you for choosing the Rio Sagrado Hotel and for sharing your experience with others.

We concur that our location is fantastic with stunning river views especially if you could enjoy them from your room. A must, should I say, is to overnight here for at least 2 nights.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Until then, we remain at your service.

Sincerely,

The staff is very friendly and accommodating. But, as alluded to by the previous reviewer, the hotel will look for every opportunity to overcharge you. For example, we asked the front desk how much it would be for a ride to the airport in Cusco. They said it would cost $75 (through their own transport service). We had to press them further about how much it would cost to take a cab and found out that it was less than 100 soles. The driveway was being worked on the entire time we were there, so the taxi driver could not turn in. And the electricity went out the first night we were there. But what I found most annoying was how kid-friendly this place is. I was on vacation with my boyfriend and expected to have a quiet and relaxing stay. What I found was that this hotel caters to families and there were lots of small children that were right outside our room every day we were there, screaming and playing in the hammocks. The hammocks were located right outside our room, so we asked that they be moved. The staff moved them for one morning, but put them back up by the afternoon. So, for couples that are looking for a quiet place to relax, stay somewhere else. This is not that place.

Dear Guest,

I appreciate the time you took to post your comment in Tripadvisor. Comments like yours make us to improve our service.

I regret to learn your disappointment with the transportation rate from the hotel to Cusco Airport. The price of it, is on par with others similar hotels on this area. In addition, we provide this service through the best company in town, this are not our own transportation.

Despite that fact that we are open to welcome all Belmond guests, we hope that you had enjoy your stay with us.

Sincerely,

The setting was lovely. The breakfast good. Dinner mediocre at best and slow. They cut off the water to our room when plumbers were fixing the plumbing in another room. When I asked the plumbers to turn it back on so I could shower, they answered that I could use it when they were done. I had to call the manager to complain, and then it was turned back on. This place is a work in progress. They were working on the driveway, so even the taxi drivers could not approach the hotel. It is in an isolated location, so they need activities there. But they charge multiples of what the charges are in town for renting a horse, and it is not their horse, they just organize it through someone in town. They charge a price for a family of four of $440/hour, and then you can only walk on the horse, no cantering or galloping. Same with kayaking and rafting --it is organized through someone in town and then they overcharge you for organizing it. They were never successful in organizing any activities for our family, so the only thing left to do is the spa (which is in fact lovely and reasonably priced). To grab a taxi from Ulluntaytamba costs 20 soles ($8). I asked them to organize a cab fro me to pick us up at the station and they said they would charge me $75 (ten times the actual price). Most good hotels provide the transfer service for free. Their staff really do not GET it when it comes to the quality of services expected of a top hotel. They charge top hotel prices, but the services are not to standard yet and yet they try to gouge clients with outrageous prices for additional services like taxis, horseback riding and rafting.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing your comment with the Trip Advisor community. We would like to express our most sincere apologies for the incident that you experienced in our property, concerning our staff, I am very proud to say that most reviews that we get refers to our staff friendly and very professional.

Concerning the cut off water, please rest assured that we already took actions to avoid any similar incident. In addition, the transportation rate that you mentioned of $75.00 is from the hotel to the Cusco´s airport, 1 hour and a half ride, it is not to the Urubamba Town.
Regarding our activities, we work whit the best adventures companies at the area and prices are on par with others hotels of the same high category.

Definitely this is not the image we will like our customer to take home and we will do everything to avoid the recurrence of incidents of this nature in the future. We hope to be able to have the chance to welcoming you and your family back to demonstrate our high level of service that you were expected.

Sincerely,

This was the perfect place to spend a few days upon arrival in the high Andes and before Machu Picchu! Such a lovely setting, the view from our balcony was just fabulous. Flowers everywhere, birds singing, the soft sounds of the Urubamba River...
Probably the best part was the kind and welcoming staff, who made sure we had everything we needed. Well run, beautiful food and setting.
