“Beautiful...could have stayed longer”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

Upon our arrival in Cusco we were taken down into the Sacred Valley to assist with our acclimatization to the high altitude. We had two nights booked at the Sol Y Luna Lodge and Spa and this hotel served as a base for visiting Pisac and Ollantaytambo.

The grounds were magnificently maintained and our casita was very spacious, very well appointed and luxurious.

There were a couple of negatives. Our casita was located down near the Ranch which is where the roosters are kept. On both mornings we need not have worried about wake-up calls as these annoying roosters woke us up very early. So I recommend that you request that your casita be situated well away from the roosters.

Breakfast was interesting. I don't think the waiters were that confident in speaking English and for the most part we had to go hunting to find one when we needed something. I noticed other guests experiencing the same issue. They seemed like they wanted to avoid guests as much as possible and hid in the kitchen for lengthy periods of time. But that was a minor point and certainly would not suggest not booking here because of that.

We wished we could have stayed longer but Machu Picchu was waiting...

Room Tip: Avoid casitas down the bottom of the lodge near the horse ranch.

Stayed there one night while visiting Sacred Valley en route to Machu Picchu.

The casita (a detached room) was lovely and very unusual, but lacking in adequate lighting.

All members of our party of four were disappointed with the food and dining service. We expected great and got good, and we are not foodies. Trying to be professional, the waitstaff put our ordered items in front of us without asking who had what. However, everything was wrong, and it was Keystone Cops time. At breakfast, it seemed the staff was always looking elsewhere, not to our needs.

And the promised wifi was available in only the reception and main dining room, but not in the casitas or breakfast room, which was adjacent to the Dining Room. "We're having a problem with wifi in the casitas" was the response to my phone call to the front desk, where, just 5 minutes earlier, I received the wifi code. Is that service and attention to detail?

So, it's a near miss, but a miss nonetheless.

Set away from the main road in a very quiet location.
Individual villas set in lush grounds.
Each room is well appointed, although oddly without a hairdryer, and very comfortable. Samll private sitting area overlooking the grounds.
First floor bar and slightly formal restaurant beneath. We used the less formal, I suspect the same menu, second restaurant at the far end of the grounds. Very good food, and an additional horse riding show thrown in much to our surprise. Good breakfast.
Wifi in the rooms was out / suspect this was common. But free and stable wifi available in reception.
Highly recommended.

Dear Pwcrafton,
Thank you for taking the time to write. For us your comment is very important.
I am quite surprise to read you did not have a hair dryer in your casita, since we have equiped all of them with one. You should not have hesitated to ask for one, since one of our main goals is to provide our guest anything they might need and try to make of their stay one of the best experience ever!
We hope you can visit us again anytime soon.

Our best regards,

Sol y Luna Team

The rooms were really spacious, like mini cottages. The grounds are beautifully tented to, and service is very friendly. It was a little outrageous to find $4 bottles of water, knowing how far that money would go outside. We walked down the street and came across a random parade that included a pickup truck piled high with about 6 bed mattresses. The culture around is incredible and real. I felt safe here, travelling with all girls.

My friend and I happened up the Sol y Luna while traveling in Peru and booked rooms straight away. What an incredible place! No detail of the resort was left undone. The grounds were spectacular, our rooms well appointed (we loved the local art), meals were great and the service wonderful!

This is a walled hotel in what appears to be quite a poor area. The grounds are beautiful and there are spectacular views of the mountains. Hummingbirds feed from the flowers outside your room. Nothing much outside the hotel within walking distance.

Rooms are self-contained bungalows. Food is good (there is a cheaper alternative in the hotel grounds as the main restaurant is expensive). Short shows/demonstrations in the evening add a little local interest while you are eating.

This place is nothing short of amazing. Every detail of the resort from the carefully manicured grounds, to the bar, restaurant, spa and of course the rooms is well designed and maintained. The service is first class and I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Urabamba.
