Just got back from pleasurable evening at Cafe Bacacay, just minutes from my hotel. Nice contemporary design but old school feel, like a place you'd image poets & revolutionaries met in Montevideo in old days. Excellent music playing: one of few places where I heard Uruguayan & other regional sounds rather than MOR American radio. Fine bottle of Tannat washed down a simple but well done omelette & onion soup. Best service so far & good price considering it's opposite main theatre. Shame I'm leaving tomorrow.

Cuidad Vieja closes down on Sundays, holidays, late nights, etc. But Cafe Bacacay is almost always opened. The citrus-ginger chicken is great. The ravioli is very good. Salads and sandwiches are good. Try to sit close to the window looking over Teatre Solis -- beautiful view and fun people watching.

After a day of travel we checked into our hotel on Indepence Square and walked over to Cafe Bacacay. What a pleasant suprise. The food was really good, I had the citrus-ginger chicken with grilled vegetables. It was light and yummy, just what I needed after a full travel day. They have cocktail called a Pisco Sour that would recommend as well.
Atmosphere was very appealing with a beautiful view of the Teatro across the street. Clean modern look with a cool Uruguayan vibe. Playing music that was modern tango for a while and then switched to a good jazz.
Service was good and I thought that prices in what seems to be the heart of a tourist area were very reasonable.
