Nicely kept hotel. Fast check in and check out good breakfast buffet spread. Lots of restaurant and money changer around the hotel. Exchange rate for P19/20 for $ 1. The staff knows how to speak English very well which is good for the non native speakers like me. Easy to get around the hotel and everything is walking distance

This is NOT a 5-star hotel, but it is a very friendly and helpful 4-star in busy, downtown, Montevideo!

Our room was clean, well-equipped (yes, rather small, but did have a sorta queen bed), and the desk was over-the-top in helpfulness! I mean...the desk clerk even walked me down two blocks to the ATM to read the script in Spanish and help me get some local money! Yes, he got a tip (but I screwed up on understanding the exchange rate so his "tip" was only about $2 UDS). In spite of that he continued to be very helpful and even stored some of our luggage, without charge, for a week while we went off on a wine-tasting tour.

Would we stay here again in future trips? You BET! Clean, helpful. Not a "destination" hotel, but really cool for the purpose!

Room Tip: As always, higher is quieter, but all of the rooms have good insulation and double windows, so even...

I booked a single room for one person. It was tiny, claustrophobic and way overpriced for what I paid. However I complained and I was transferred to one of their suites. Which was absolutely huge by any standard.
So I was overly compensated beyond my expectations. It is quite an old hotel, but if you get the right room, it is worth it.
The breakfast wasn't bad, especially the Dolce de leche. Breakfast room was very surreal like being in the early 19 th century and other guests were very friendly there.
The Balmoral is in a prime location of Montevideo, right bang in the centre.
Make sure you do not get the tiny single room

Stayed in late November 2012 and the hotel was under construction and had scaffolding blocking the plaza side. Trying to find the hotel proved very difficult as we were arriving in rental car and the garage was on the back of the block and no signs for parking were clear. Parking in the underground lot was quite tricky so we had to have the porter park and retrieve the car each time but he was fast and cheery.
The hotel itself is quite dated but the location is ideal- in a safe area right down the street from some great restaurants. The staff are professional although always looking as if they are overworked/too busy but any request was filled in time. Restaurant in the hotel was quite good and appeared to be a local favorite. Room was long and a bit tight but comfortable.
There is no wow factor with this hotel, but it seems to be a safe bet that can provide the necessities of a pleasant stay in Montevideo.

Balmoral is OK. Good food, good service. Location... is close to the old town (about 15 minutes walk) and close to shops, but not so close to the newer part of town, or the higher-end part.
The hotel rooms are TINY (and I mean tiny... the same size as the showers), yet they are clean. Good hot water. As the hotel, the elevators are old... so is the hotel, where everything is dated.
The food is good. Room service costs $5 extra!

Room Tip: something facing away from the streets. rooms have double windows, so not much noise there...

We spent a couple of nights in this hotel on 2 separate occasions and were extremely pleased with the rooms and the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. Good morning breakfast buffet. The rooms were clean and comfortable and we were able to just walk out the front (or back)door and be right in the center of Montevideo. Two main plazas are just blocks away. Great choices of places to shop, sightsee and eat very close by.

Good, but not great. Very good location, in Centro, so easy to get to places to eat and shop. Room was quite comfortable and we found staff very courteous and helpful. Breakfast was good and reasonably diverse, but after the fourth morning we were a little tired of it. Unfortunately, the coffee was not good (but neither was it much better anywhere else in the land of mate drinkers). Overall, we'd stay there again.
