“Great location and great service.”
Reviewed 15 January 2014

This is a fine hotel in a great location. The staff is very friendly and the food is great! We had a great view of the Rambla. The locals use the Rambla day and night. It goes 16.2 miles. Great for walking or running. I will stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a good view of the Rambla.

We were greeted warmly and offered a coffee during the short and efficient check-in. The staff is friendly, helpful and speak excellent English and Portuguese, as well as Spanish. Guillermo also speaks French, due to his French heritage. Our room was on the Rambla, overlooking the Rio Plata beach with views all the way down to Faro Punta Brava - the lovely 1876 (non-automated) lighthouse.

The buffet breakfast was a delight (served from 7Am through 10:30) with an attending omelette chef. ,Scrambled eggs, sausages, cured ham as well as Spanish fresh ham, cheeses, artesanal breads galore, pastries, cakes, cereals, yogurts, fresh fruits including kiwis and pineapple with delicious unlimited steaming coffee. Full restaurant staff to clear the tables, pour more coffee, chat with you, if you like and in general..attend to all your dining needs. One waiter even went to the trouble of printing out 2 bus touring maps for us.

Check out was in Uruguayan pesos or in USD...your choice at a very fair rate. You also have the option of leaving a (small) general tip for all the staff, added to your bill (as on cruise ships). And we were able to leave our luggage for many hours checked behind the desk while we went sightseeing and shopping, and left in a taxi for a late Buquebus to Buenos Aires, only 2 hours away..direct.

Room Tip: Choose front-facing (water view) rooms if possible.

A good choice for the 3 days we spent in Montevideo. We were unsure whether to book old town or coast and went for the seaside location Punto Carratas. This was a wise choice in January as town is pretty deserted after 5pm-we did find a lovely restaurant in town, on the bus route-Los Lenos.

The hotel overlooks the sea, and we could see from our bedroom (side view). We paid £85/night for a room which was spacious, had a bath and a very comfortable bed. Staff very helpful and friendly and the breakfast was very good with plenty of choice. Welcome drink-also included. The executive rooms looked a good option as they had the full sea view and an exclusive use sun terrace.

From our hotel the nicer beach was about 10 minutes walk (although it was possible to sit on the grass opposite the hotel-others did). Punta Carretas shopping centre 2 blocks from the hotel. We used the bus from outside Punta Carretas- number 117 or 121 cost $21 pesos to the old town (Ciudad Viejo)-about 39 minutes.

Room Tip: If you can afford/find a deal-upgrade to executive for true boutique hotel feel.

Excellent location, water front. Very clean, friendly and competent staff, excellent breakfast. One little problem, the laundry pricws are in US$ and it is not mentioned. We had a big surprise with the bill. Montevideo was a pleasant city to visit. It seems to be safe along the river.

Excellent English language skills made check in a breeze. Very friendly and helpful check in staff. Room was oerlooking the Rambla and River Plate - great view. Room was comfortable, clean and cosy. Housekeeping was very good. Breakfast was surprisingly good, which is not a strong point of South American hotels in general, with very attentive staff.

Location is great - nice mall and supermarket around the corner, the Rambla river front on your door step, which is great for watching Montevideo pass by. Some really nice restaurants within easy walking distance too. To get into the old town, you're on the main road so plenty of taxis can be flagged down. The rates are all clearly displayed in the cab and its pretty cheap and quick to get into town. All the taxi drivers I found knew exactly where the hotel was, so must be well known.

Overall, I much preferred staying in Punta Carretas at the Cala di Volpe rather than in the old town - it felt very safe, was clean and everyone was very friendly. Sure, the Sheraton might be THE PLACE to go, but this place is just round the corner, on the river front and MUCH better value.

As a note - I accidentally left three shirts in the room on check out. I emailed two days later saying I was passing through Montevideo in a few days and could I pick them up. I got a prompt response saying the shirts had been found and would be waiting for me at the hotel. The night porter, despite limited English was a star, finding my lost shirts at 9pm at night when I managed to drop by on my way home.

Definitely recommended.

located near one of the biggest shopping centers in montevideo city... on the rambla,it has unobstructed views of the river plate, the sea, as they call it... very professional staff, courteous and helpfull... rooms are modern and nice... has a bar for after-six downwind and chatting...breakfast is very good... estensive use for executive or business meetings... prices are allright, even in this new ¨very expensive montevideo city¨... uruguayan peso is very strong, and your dollars or euros won´t go too far these days... a pity...
