“Simple, comfortable and clean”
Reviewed 13 February 2009

The hotel is in one of the best areas of Montevideo: Pocitos. It is very nice to walk around the neighborhood and the Rambla (the avenue along the River Plate).

PROS - location (far from downtown, but in a nice neighborhood and taxis are cheap); very clean; room is dated but very well maintained (it has modern air-con and renewed bathroom); good pc's for internet access.

CONS - breakfast could be more tasty and have more options.

Considering the price (about 65 US dollars for a double room), this hotel is a reasonable option.

Don't expect much, but I garantee you will feel safe and comfortable.

Pros: Great location a block from the beach - my 7th floor room had a terrific view of the ocean (beach side rooms cost a little more - $70US). For the price I had two rooms, a bathroom and a connecting corridor to myself - not sure if that is usual, I suspect not, it seemed like a family setup. Safe, affluent neighbourhood. Clean. Free internet access - there are two computers set up in the foyer for guests to use. Restaurants scattered about the neighbourhood. I didn't use the hotel restaurant.

Cons: Staff were polite and helpful but otherwise disinterested. Several kilometres from the old city, but its a pleasant walk if you have the time or taxis are cheap enough.

A friend of a friend who lives in Montevideo recommended this place for my friend and I, as we were trying to watch our money, but also wanted to be in a safe neighborhood by the beach. It was pleasant enough with the feeling of a Days Inn or something. Our room was quite small, but tidy. The bathroom was also tidy. The deco was dated, but acceptable because it was clean. We didn't eat at the restaurant so I don't know how it is, but in the area there were some diners to eat at, but nothing fancy. It seems like all the decent restaurants and stuff are in Carrasco...

stayed here 2 nights in early November. Location in Pocitos is perfect. We had a 7th floor room looking out over the water. The AC worked altho there was a cool breeze off the water and we left windows open, which was important, since the room smelled heavily of tobacco when we first arrived . We found the place to be impersonal and the staff unhelpful. Just a few blocks further "inland" there is a great area with fabulous restaurants, but no one directed us there. The next morning in frustration we walked to the Sheraton - very helpful concierge spent time orienting us and gave us tons of brochures, maps, "what's happening in Montevideo" type info. That day was much more pleasant - great food, wonderful tango at a place called Joven Tango. If I were returning to Montevideo I would probably try one of the other properties listed above this. It was not a language problem, mi esposa is fluent in Spanish, the staff just seemed clueless and uninterested.

This is lovely little hotel. The staff are very friendly and very helpful. Its not luxury but was clean. The breakfast was limited but ok. Pocitos is a nice area. The Ramblas is beautiful but on closer inspection the beach is very dirty, shame because i love to swim in the sea. Taxi's are cheap but you can catch a local bus into town right outside the hotel which is easy and fun. This hotel is a bargain for the price and I would def recommend it to friends.

I've stayed at the Ermitage several times over the last few years and I have always enjoyed it. The price listed on Tripadvisor is not current - right now it's ~$65/night.

The rooms are comfortable, but some are smaller than others. Beds and linens have always been clean and comfortable. The best part of the room is the bathroom. The shower is amazing!! The tv are old and small and I don't think there are fridges in the rooms. There is free wireless wifi within the hotel. Breakfast (media-lunas, coffee, ham, cheese, yogurt, etc) is included and there are bakeries close by if you prefer something else.

The neighborhood is a safe and friendly upper-middle class area. There are lots of nearby restaurants, shopping, and cyber-cafes. The hotel is directly between the two best shopping malls in Montevideo - Montevideo Shopping and Punta Carretas Shopping. Both are assessable by bus.

Overall, I think that the Ermitage is the best place to stay in Montevideo, especially considering the price and location. And Pocitos is an amazing neighborhood!

  • Liked — The location was amazing for the price. The rooms are comfortable and comfortable.
  • Disliked — It's not a place for young people to come in late at night and make a lot of noise. Most of the peole are elderly and the front desk gets mad if you come in late at night and rowdy.

GREAT PLACE TO STAY! The "Pocitos" location in the city is excellent, and you get a great feel of how the locals live as you are surrounded by apartments, small houses, restaurants, bakerys, etc. All within easy walking distance. Two blocks up hill is La Otra - GREAT food!

This hotel isn't what I would call a high end fancy place. It is an older place, but the rooms are clean and the bathrooms quite nice. Request a room at the front overlooking the Plaza. You might get a little traffic noise, but the view is more than worth it. You see the Plaza, the Rambla, the beach, and the ocean!

I found the staff SUPER helpful. I barely speak Spanish, but it didn't matter to them. Handwritten directions, send a maid to your room to get clothes for iron (Yes, no irons in the room... a fact my wife found very frustrating... but its Uruguay.) Next door is a small laundry who will wash your clothes, iron them, etc for next to nothing. I found it so cheap it was almost embarrassing to pay them.

We stayed there off and on for 10 days during late April and early May of 2007. The hotel was good enough, but the location again, is excellent. Taxis are plentiful and safe, internet cafe half a block away in case the free internet in the hotel lobby was being used, the 20 mile Rambla on the beach is 1/2 a block away.

OH, and that area of Montevideo called Pocitos is very safe! People eat very late in Uruguay, and my wife and I would find ourselves walking the streets sometimes as late as 1:00 am. Again, no danger, and very safe... however we are in our mid 30's so that might have a little to do with it. But this is a downtown, residential type of area so there is security guards/doormen all around the entrances to apartments/condos.... which I believe contributes to the safety.

If you want a 5-star hotel this isn't your place, but if you are looking for a hotel that just makes a 3-star, then I highly recommend the Ermitage Hotel. It was off season and we paid about $53 USD per night, including tax. Well worth it!!

  • Liked — the location
  • Disliked — Would like to have nicer blankets on the bed, but that is a pet peeve with most hotels i go to.
