Spent two nights at the Hotel Palacio, Thursday and Friday. We stayed in room 58 on the 4th floor. Found it to be bit lacking in comfort and there was too much outside noise to get a good night sleep.

The bed was super thin and we could feel the wood frame. The linens are pretty old. The toilet is placed poorly in the bathroom, jammed up against the wall and is so close to the pedestal sink your knees poke under it.

On the plus side it's a super affordable place ($44 USD), has some lovely vintage features (beautiful elevator, vintage furniture), and all the staff are very nice. They don't speak english, but helped us with taxis. It's really clean and heated nicely, and the shower has good water pressure.

Key problem:
- Friday night we experienced extreme noise from 2am - 6am, there is a rowdy bar below the hotel where people are shouting until the wee hours. I had to put pillows over my head and sleep under the covers to try to drowned out the sound. Didn't help much.

Room Tip: Avoid room 58, try for floors 5 + 6 which have balconies.

My friend and I stayed here for three nights in late July 2011. We are seniors and budget travelers. Hotel Palacio is in a great location . . . half a block from the Plaza Independensia and the pedestrian-only street Sarandi, in the old city.

The hotel has an open elevator with wrought iron doors. We had room 45 on the 2nd floor. We had twin beds, TV, ceiling fan, wardrobe, desk, two chairs, mini refrigerator. Our bathroom had a shower w/curtain, toilet, bidet, sink. The hotel is very clean . . . and we had free wi-fi in our room. There is no breakfast but there are places nearby.

The reception folks do not speak English but were able to help point us in the right directions with our limited Spanish. We paid approximately $60/night.

We thought this was an excellent hotel and would definitely stay here if we return to Montevideo.

Stayed here for one night on our second time in Montevideo. We had been recommended the hotel and thought we would stay in the centre as we had just one night before our bus to Paraguay rather than stay in Pocitos were we stayed at the nice Punto Berro hostel on our previous visit. It's a great old hotel with lovely owners. It made a nice change from the hostel scene. THey gave us a map and recommendations. We even paid in US $ on a credit card with no commission added!

We were renewing our visas, so booked 2 nights at Hotel Palacio, having experienced the horrors of Hotel Iberia on our last trip to MVD. We booked Room #66, on the top floor. All rooms on 5th & 6th floor have private balconies - SIZEABLE balconies, terraces, really.

We were immediately enchanted by the lovely wrought iron antique elevator in the lobby. How nice for getting in & out with baggage! The friendly & helpful staff were the icing on the cake. They provided us with a map of MVD & were happy to make recommendations for the best places to eat and/or shop - whether expensive or cheap.

What sets this hotel apart is the absolute, incredible cleanliness of the place! I was not able to find a speck of dust anywhere, from antique wardrobe to the marble-topped dresser & side tables... Finally, I did find a bit of a dust bunny clinging to the electric cord to the hot water heater in the bathroom (fitted with bidet as well as toilet & full HUMONGOUS cast iron tub & shower... The hot water is a bit "hinky," but you'll get the hang of it. Just turn the hot water on full, when hot, turn on the cold tap to add just enough cold to tame the hot water down a bit... You'll end up fooling with it for a few minutes (as I did), but that was the only negative thing I could find to say about this hotel.

Heating is provided by steam radiators & is more than sufficient, even with the doors to the terrace open in mid-winter, without being overpowering. The bedrooms can be a tad crowded, with huge wardrobe, double beds with 2 side tables, lamps, etc., writing desk with small fridge underneath, TV sits on the dresser top & 2 additional antique chairs for guests or whatever.

The bathroom matched the bedroom in size and, with the huge terrace thrown in, we felt as if we had an entire suite to ourselves - with NO street noise whatsoever - for only $45 per night.

The hotel has WiFi in every room, as well as a computer room with reading materials & DVD for guest use. They do not provide breakfast, but there is a cafe across the street or, if you feel like walking, cross Plaza de Independencia, go straight ahead 1 block & turn left. You will be in front of The Manchester, a lovely bistro serving excellent omelettes & freshly ground coffee, espresso & cappuccino... We had 2 meals there & were very well pleased both times. Prices are incredibly reasonable.

Rest assured, we look forward to our next trip to MVD, probably a livestock purchasing trip. Those deep soft, yet firm latex mattresses (similar to tempurpedic) and the fluffy fuzzy comforters (2 on the bed, with extras in the wardrobe), along with the incredible cleanliness were SO appealing.

Our terrace had excellent views of the architecture of the city, the buildings lit up at night, and the shipyard & Rio de la Plata. Everything you need, including the Direccion Nacional de Migration, are all within walking distance. I simply cannot think of any reason we would ever want to stay anywhere else in Montevideo!

Room Tip: 5th & 6th floors have private terraces; all rooms have balconies, but the top floors are more private.

Wasn't really sure what to expect from the outside - looked a bit sketchy. Also arrived at night when the streets were pretty empty so that felt kind of scary too, but the room was very clean and good-sized. We had a double, which had small beds (like someone mentioned) but for a 5'6" female, it was good enough for me (although it would have been nice if they were wider). Also, the bed frame is set up so that it can easily convert to a king size bed, so they always kind of have to be put together (otherwise you can fall off easily like my friend did when we pulled them apart). This didn't really bother us though. I don't really need much to be happy with a place - as long as the beds are comfortable and the room is clean. And for this price (800 pesos/night or about 40$, it was very worth it. Bathroom had really hot water as well and was big. Our room was on the 5th floor. Service was good as well - they were very nice and helpful. Free, fast wireless internet (1 computer downstairs for use)
