Reviewed 29 August 2013

My Partner and I spent a very relaxing week here in August. We had a great time and were treated extremely well by all the staff who I would now consider close friends.
The privacy of your own stand alone Bure and the use of the home made this holiday a wonderful experience. The pool was beautiful, well maintained and sparkling also in a sheltered position.
The wonderful girls who looked after us, Julie and Maraia, were always happy and welcoming not to forget wonderful cooks as well, nothing was too much!!
I had a very enjoyable horse ride on the beach, thanks to Thomas and meeting all his family was a pleasure.
We met some fantastic people while we were there and loved our evenings laughing around the gorgeous outdoor fire place!!
I have no hesitation to endorse and encourage anybody who is over the huge resort scene to try this beautiful private piece of paradise.
I have another week up my sleeve, I cant wait to go back soon!!

The Bures are designed to have a luxury feel double, showers as a little luxury. We want guests to know they are not at home that they are experiencing something a little special

We used a voucher and felt we got a real bargain! De Vos was beautiful and the staff were lovely and friendly. Its not a big resort so is perfect for couples like us who wanted to do our own thing and have some space but the staff were always there to answer questions and help with booking activities etc. We were happy to use public transport and got buses and minvans to and from Singatoka from right outside the resort. We also got the bus to the airport no hassle. Its the perfect place to relax and do things on Fiji time! We would definitely return.

I am of 2 minds about this place. WE drove a rental car from Nadi but despite google maps and directions it was hard to find, especially in the dark and rain but somehow we managed. If you are going here be advised to get explicit directions. Upon check in, Julie and the crew were lovely. Their sincere "Bula" felt warm and welcoming. We were hungry after a long day and stressful drive and Julie prepared a lovely plate of fish. We had a nice room, with king bed and small but functional kitchen. The lighting is poor throughout the bure, however. This was not pleasant. The room was not terribly clean when we checked in but was much better on subsequent days. Perhaps the regular cleaning people were not there for our arrival. The bathroom was adequate with an open shower and small sink and toilet. Again, poor lighting so difficult to see well enough to put on makeup! Maybe vacations should be make up free but I like to have a choice. There was no door on the bathroom so although it was separate from the rest of the room you never felt like you had privacy, if needed. The kitchen supplies were basic. When we asked for an additional fry pan, it was provided. But the pots and pans were not clean and required a thorough scrubbing. The heat pump provided air con (again we had to ask for the remote since the air con was not turned on when we arrived; the remote never did work so we turned the thing on and off manually) but for our needs it was insufficient. We asked for, and were provided with, a fan to help the side of the bed that was shielded from the air con mounted in the centre of the living area. For the entire time that we were there, there was no key available for our bure. So we had to rely on someone to come to open it up for us. We felt a little guilty getting back late on a couple of nights after taking a boat to one of the islands. The pool looked inviting but once in it we realized that it was murky. It didn't look clean. Be advised that swimming or snorkeling on this bit of beach is not pleasant. There is a lot of brush in the water and you have to go out quite a distance to get away from this. We didn't bother and instead took 2 days of boat visits to islands for snorkeling and swimming. When I looked up De Vos prior to booking, there was a "deal" for $500 AUD per night. We did not pay anywhere near that but had we paid this much I would have been very disappointed. This is, at best, a 3 star accommodation. The people are pleasant but the beach is not inviting, the pool was not clean and the room was only adequate. The bed was ok but not superb, as you might expect at a 4 or 5 star accommodation. It is not a resort that would keep children happy. But we were not with children and we had a car. So it was a good base for exploring Fiji. Would I return? Probably not. There are other places on the Coral coast that offer a more established beach and some have direct access to a coral reef for snorkeling right from your door step. If, however, you want to be away from the more commercial operations, then DeVos is a good bet, assuming you don't overpay for the place.

Room Tip: there was a lot of street noise from our bure that had a small kitchen. Those towards the sea are pr...

We were scheduled to stay for a week, arrived late on the first day, Napo (the head cook) and Ryan (the owner's son) stayed up late to welcome us, that was rather warm i would say.

The following days, Julie (the manager) welcomed and assisted us with all the needs and inquiries. Thomasi (the property manager) was a fun and a helpful guy, he runs a horse riding trip and spearfishing trip from time to time so just ask. A lovely little indian lady named Gheeta (she's a house keeper, i am sorry both me and my wife forgot your name, was it Gheeta?), she's very polite and kind to talk to. Last but not least, the cat (forgot the name... i am sorry), came into our room every morning asking for milk, so we fed it for the whole 2 and a half weeks of stay, pretty sure there was the bond between human and cat there somewhere.

The room was very nice, 2 headed shower room was very enjoyable though we both felt that the 2 beds were a bit wasted, the room we had was i think initially designed to host a family instead of just a couple. The foods were nice, love Napo's omelet, although it's not as good looking as the professional ones but i love them very much. Too bad they don't have a built in kitchen or at least a microwave for us to cook our own food, my wife is a mean cook and the seafood there were dead cheap, that was a small regret we both thought will have to change on the next trip to Fiji. Room can be serviced everyday but who needs a new towel every single day so we set it to a two day basis. Pool was clean, took a swim there. Didn't spend much time on the living room watching DVDs though.

We had some issues with my wife's visa upon departure on the seventh day, turned out we had to stay for another 3 weeks just to get her visa renewed and we chose to stay back at the very same place. Julie offered us the same room with a rather attractive price. Annemarie (hope i spell the owner's name right) was a lovely lady, she greeted us and offered to help with the visa issues.

We ended up staying at DeVos for 28 days (close to a month), spent the first 2 and a half weeks at DeVos Private Residence at Maui Bay, and the last week and a half at DeVos At The Park, a newly established hotel at Suva, due to the shorter commute time between the place we stay and the NZ immigration office.

Both me and my wife loved the place, not saying it's any better than a highly ranked hotel like Warwick, Hideaway closed by, but it's another five stars experience that we think we both enjoyed very much and would like to visit some other time. It's less like a "Sir and Madam" but a more like a "Hei, how's your day today" experience, relaxing in a quiet sunset, listening to the buzzing of insects and enjoying the sweet taste of a freshly chopped coconut juice (they don't have fresh coconut there, but i think it's just because we didn't ask), a lovely trip i would say.

Would definitely recommend it, try to bring some insect repellents, otherwise keep asking for mosquitoes coil is just stupid. Can also try out DeVos at the park at Suva if a more hectic and busy city life style is what you guys are after.

Many thanks to AnneMarie, Ryan, Julie, Thomasi, Napo, Gheeta, Lenny (i believed i spelled the name right, from DeVos at the park), thanks a lot.

“An alternate home!”
Reviewed June 6, 2013 We were scheduled to stay for a week, arrived late on the first day,

Bula,

Thanks for your wonderful review and detailed account of your stay. You made friends with the staff and we are pleased they made your stay welcoming. It certainly is what we intend to do.
The cat by the way is called Baxter strange name for a female but named by a little girl who thought it suited so who are we to argue. Baxter it is.

Napo certainly enjoyed your stay and appreciated cooking for you

The Bures are designed to have two beds for couples, a luxury feel not necessarily for a family I suppose that may seem a bit of a waste for a long stay but 5 -7 day couple enjoy the spaciousness and extra bed , double showers as a little luxury. They want to know they are not at home that they are experiencing something special

We do have a self contained unit that you can cook yourself but initially you came for a holiday most people that come on holiday some say they would like the experience cooking then relax and change their mind in your case staying so long we should of thought to ask you if you would like to cook a bit remiss of us.

Glad you enjoyed your stay and it is not a Warwick or Hideaway as you say it quiet serene a different experience to a busy resort but still with the facilities-the pool is always a bonus so large for so few no fight over sun chairs.
for a long stay , as you say Suva is little more hectic and different our heart went out to your wife with her visa problems so more than happy to help

So thanks again

I would definitely NOT recommend this "hotel". We stayed for four nights and seriously thought about going to a different resort after the first night. The room itself was nice, although a little grubby. On our first night we were extremely annoyed to find we had no hot water, and my fiancee was outside in the dark helping to change the gas - not a good first impression! The beach outside was very average and rocky. The communal area felt as though we were living in someones house and invading their space a little. We were only allowed to book a couple of the tours with them, and ended up going down the road to another resort to book a tour, as De Vos would not let us book with them - it was like they had deals with certain tour companies and we felt pressured to do the tours they wanted us to do. They had credit card facilities but they asked for cash when we paid for anything which really annoyed us. The food provided was very average and expensive. No alcohol is available. We didn't like the location, as it was very far away from the touristy areas (around 2 and a half hours) to Nadi - and the road trip is a little scary! The "Wifi" barely worked and yet we were still charged for it. A nice touch was them providing us with a breakfast tray when we were heading out early on tours. Also loved the huge double showers in our bathroom. This was not enough to override a pretty rubbish experience at De Vos.

Thanks for taking the time to write this reveiw this was obvoiusly not the place for you all the guests at same time have written to us wonderful reviews so to address your points so we make sure we are catering for the right guest

It woud be nice to now why you initally thought this was not the place for you and most peoples response on arrival is this is much beter than expected and the photos do no justice but theres no details to answer this.Apart from your comments beach and surrounding area so one presumes the acutally hotel residence was ok for you. Your husband helping change the gas bottle that took 2 minutes he had no reason to help the staff change this they have no problem they do this all the time but thought he was just being friendly

It appearss the Coral Coast is just not your cup of tea which is fine it is not everyones but is however hugely popular with anyone intererested in snorkelling diving or water sports
The Coral rock in areas is a must for coral reef for all the fish and sea life and snorkelling thats what makes it so famous Coral Coast there are many areas of sandy beach I will post more photos
We have no preference on tour bookings and all brochures offered everwhere are exaclty the same everywhere. We have what everyone has if you ask we tell our opinion on feedback from other guests bu thats allThe phone is available and anyone can make your own bookings not sure what this means
We advertise we do not have a liqur licence but it is in process
The trip to Nadi is 90 minutes and yes we agree all roads in Fiji ittle scary thats why we always recommend a transfer and nothing else not to drive yourself for that very reason
The Coral Coast was just not for you
We apprecaite your comments as they clarify for others that may have the same requirements in a holiday the Coast is great for snorkelling, fishing ,water sports, sea life and great country sides, a friendly local people A grade roads in Fiji a definite no
So thanks you again

We have just come back from here for our honeymoon. From the moment we arrived we were greeted by the lovely staff. Nothing was too much trouble and my husband and I absolutely loved it. The rooms were made up every day, the dinners were amazing.Sioni and the the girls were great entertainment. We felt extremely welcome, so much so, my new husband would like to buy the property. On our last night we were set up on the step leading to the beach for our dinner, everything was just perfect and romantic. We had the buree at the front and had the perfect view to the beach. The water was amazing and being up close to the reef sharks and the fish were a delight to see. We were made to feel as though we were the only 2 people there. We walked to the next resort, and didn't find it a scratch on what we were receiving from De Vos.There is not one thing we could complain about, our holiday was perfect. My husband and I came home the most relaxed we have been ever been.Thank you very much for making our honeymoon a very memorable one. Looking forward to returning. Tracey and Rick.

I have recently returned from my third visit to de Vos. This time travelling with a friend as opposed to travelling solo.

The same warm welcome was given to me as previously. There had been some staff changes, but those remaining remembered me and greeted me like an old friend...such is the warmth of the Fijian nature.

The staff were more than obliging, and always happy to help with any request we made.
Our room, by the pool, was most clean and comfortable built with high vaulted ceilings in the Fijian manner.
The many floor to ceiling windows had most attractive wooden louvres which provided both a maximum of light when opened, and complete privacy when closed.

As well as the inside bathroom with its double-headed shower, we also had a private outside bathroom containing a large bath and a hand basin, particularly beautiful, as during our stay it was covered in Bougainvilia which was in bloom.

We were using vouchers for our stay, and although the meals ranged from fairly basic to absolutely magnificient, we found that throughout our stay we were treated like queens.

Many special thanks to Raiza for her constant attention and smiling good humour. Also to Soane for the magical memories of his guitar and sweet singing around the outside fireplace at night.

I would like to take this opportunity to praise the services if Immy's Taxi and Vans, the preferred driver of de Vos. Immy's fleet of cars are beautifuly maintained, sparkling clean and attractive both inside and out. Immy himself is unswervingly smart and courteous. As are his drivers.

I have been holidaying constantly in Fiji since my first visit in 1977, and I have run the gauntlet of dodgy taxidrivers and their even dodgier cars. I have travelled on coaches with the aisles stuffed with baggage that wouldnt fit in the baggage compartments. Not much evidence of Health and Safety regulations there! I happily trust Immy's vehicles and the competence of himself and his drivers as my life and safety are paramount to me.

Thankyou again de Vos for a wonderful stay, and I look forward with anticipation for the next visit.

Room Tip: The room behind the pool also has sea views and is very private
