“Great fun for young families”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2013 via mobile

We just returned from our stay at hideaway with our extended family, including 6 kids aged 1 to 10. It was perfect for a large group: the 18 of us were in adjoining frangipani bures. Kids club was good fun, although we only used it during the dinner hour, and the nannies (who looked after the two kids too small for Kids club) are lovely, meaning we could eat our dinner without chaos! The facilities are lovely but what made the stay special was the staff, who were exceptional. The only things worthy of comment related to the no show transfer on the morning of our arrival and the cost of wifi - but these were extremely minor and had little to no bearing on our enjoyment at hideaways.

Hideaway! Just Beautiful. We got the all inclusive deal which saved us a lot of money as all meals were paid for! Which allowed us to make use of the half price cocktails :).
The staff are so much fun! Dan greeted us on the first night
And we had a bit of a chat about Kava. Male and his happy hour games - much love! Phillip and his never been kissed cocktail - to die for :) Phil was one of the first staff members we got chatting to when we arrived. Voli - she was beautiful! Calling me every nice name under the sun, all the staff always said "bula" despite it being hot and rainy a couple of days, the weather didn't ruin our holiday because everyone was so upbeat.
For the people who say there were no choices to eat - ARE YOU SERIOUS??? We had a different menu for lunch and dinner daily, there was the al a carte menu which allowed us to have a lobster for about $30 AUS due to our package allowing us 50% - just try to get that anywhere else!!!! There's also pizza and Mongolian! Not to mention a car rental place across the road for those who commented on being "trapped" we paid $100 for a day which is pricey but at the same time you can drive it anywhere you want! Or pay $3 and catch the local bus into town! You meet the locals and it's a pretty good price! We felt far from trapped and really wanted to stay longer :(...
On our last day while waiting for our bus we met Timothy at the front who said next time we go we can go to his village for authentic Fijian food :) everyone is so welcoming and despite there being kids at the resort I still loved it and it had its peaceful times :) vinaka hideaway! We love you and WILL be back xox

I actually asked my wife whether she wanted me to call the cab back & book in somewhere else. The resort is tired. Thankfully she said no. We arrived in pouring rain & had had a delayed flight - so its fair to say we weren't in the best of moods. The grounds are fantastic, proximity to the water un-rivalled, accommodation was nice, the view brilliant. We had an oceanview bure.
What makes this resort hard to review is that despite the aged condition of many of the facilities, it is full of repeat customers. Obviously repeat customers for a reason.
We were a couple celebrating a wedding anniversary & whilst the management made us feel special, Its not a romantic retreat. In my mind its ideally suited for groups & young families. A good percentage of the guests seemed to be Australian & on an all inclusive package. Food options were plentiful, fare would be similar to 'club' food.
It wasn't for us - but I can see the appeal for others

I am writing this review from The Bedarra Beach Inn after fleeing The Fiji Hideaway Resort after just 36 hours into our 7 night all inclusive package. We forfeited everything we paid upfront in a quick decision to cut our loses and save our holiday – it was the best decision we made.

As a UK/Australian citizen I would describe Hideaway as…

For Brits, a Butlin’s Holiday Camp.

For Aussies, like being trapped in your very own episode of Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

And just like those institutions the whole place is stuck in a 1970/80’s timewarp. It’s rundown, tired and very, very sad. It made us feel depressed that this place is being peddled as a Fiji paradise. And once you’re at Hideaway there is simply, errrr, nowhere to hide. It’s close to nothing and you’re left with just the very miserable restaurant, disheartening bar and non-inviting swimming pool. I need Prozac just thinking about it.

Like the resort itself, the food leaves a bad taste in the mouth – literally. It was like playing ‘Menu Russian Roulette’ – which barrel of the chamber had the ‘squits’ bullet that would send you shooting for the bathroom? My partner was shot on day 2.

As for the entertainment, I can’t see any place for racist/xenophobic stereotypes in 2013, which you have to endure at loud volume whilst you eat your ‘Deer Hunter’ dinner. It genuinely was like watching Hey Hey, which has no place in this day and age either.

I don’t blame the staff for our experience – they were friendly and helpful like all Fijians. When I said I was checking out they offered an upgrade and asked if there was anything they could do. There wasn’t. Hideaway just wasn’t right for us in anyway, shape or form. Any request for a refund (partial or otherwise) was declined by the resort and our travel agents, My Fiji.

We rarely stay in 4/5* accommodation. The Bedarra Beach Inn is 3* (and we have stayed here before) and is a world away in every respect from The Hideaway. My Fiji need to be more honest when flogging you holidays like this. I also think their reps should visit this place more often to see how rundown it is.

They have a saying at The Hideaway which is “Welcome Home”. If you decide to book this place that’s all you’ll be wanting…to be “Welcomed Home”.

We arrived very late in the evening during a downpour to be greeted warmly by the local hotel staff. As the restaurant was about to close, we were told "don't worry, we'll take your bags to your bure, you go through and have dinner". A special mention goes to Tepola who took our orders quickly, got us two glasses of red wine immediately and genuinely welcomed us. By the time we finished our room keys were ready, plus all our ancilliaries, and our bags were in our room.
The bure (number 58) was spacious and very clean, the bathroom was a bit tired, but nothing some re-grouting of the tiles wouldn't fix.
Next morning our breakfast was delicious and plentiful: to those people who have grumbled about the "sameyness" of the food, this genuinely baffled me - and I'm a fussy foodie!! There was everything to choose from: cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt, a full hot breakfast and the Egg Man going like a trojan cooking in extreme heat and humidity whilst smiling and cracking jokes.
Lunch - more of the same - okay, so service was a bit slow - but guys YOU'RE ON HOLIDAY - RELLLAAAAXXXXXXX.
Dinner - again, delicious: Naomi - what a star: anticipating our every food and beverage requirement and making us feel like long lost friends.
Unfortunately the weather was awful (no-one can control that), and I got sick on the 4th day - NOTHING to do with the food or the water. We asked to see a local doctor which the lady on the front desk arranged very quickly and our taxi driver (Raj) was polite, attentive and very pleasant. Due to my condition we regrettably had to cut our trip short, and our sincere thanks goes out to Teijeli????? who helped my hubby out arranging flights and also to George at My Fiji in Nadi, who not only got the cost of the amendment fee on the flights down, but personally greeted us at Nadi airport at 6:30am to physically handover our new E-Tickets.
We were very sad to have to leave so early, and had circumstances been different we would have enjoyed every moment.
I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone - couples, families, retirees, singles: there is something for everyone. Sure, it's not the Ritz, but I'd rather stay in a genuine indigenous place and experience the locals and their culture than be hermetically sealed in an air-conditioned suite far removed from the "real world" watching cable TV.

Room Tip: Choose the bures as far away from the road and right on the beach if you can.

The stay started with a "Bula - welcome home". And the staff will make you feel like this. The friendliness is honest and this makes you feel good. Besides the great location on the Coral Coast this is the greatest asset of this place. We enjoyed our stay in our Oceanview Bure (highly recommended due to the magical views when loom outside in the morning). The place is clean but wouldn't mind a refurbishment. However we enjoyed the private outdoor shower - when else can you shower below palm trees. The resort is a bit remote but that will give you nice private strolls along the beach. Reef shoes are highly recommended for a walk on the beach.
The taxi ride from the airport cost $120 and took app 90 min. An enjoyable drive as the taxi driver tells you a lot about the island. If you want to stay online - WiFi is available in the resort at $20 per day. We had a remote bure but no problems with the internet access.

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Fiji, we spent our first 6 nights at the hideaway and were so happy with our experience we are planning our next trip already. We took the all inclusive package and booked an ocean view bure, to our surprise and excitement we were upgraded to an ocean front bure which was amazing we had the reef on or doorstep and an outdoor shower/bath. We found the staff to be the best part of our stay so welcoming and all new us by name. We participated in the free activities and enjoyed them all, the staff were so helpful in making sure we knew what we were doing as a first time snorkeler I have discovered it is not as easy as it looks but by the end I had the hang of it thanks to the activities team.
I could write a book on how much fun we had and how enjoyable our stay was, and honestly it was the best part of our trip. I also recommend walking down the beach past the resort and checking out the horse ride to the waterfall.
As I said we cant wait to go back. Only thing missing from the resort is a swim up bar this would have made it 10 out of 10 (and rumor has it this maybe on the cards? Will find out when we return)
