South Seas Private Hotel
Reviewed 20 June 2014

Stayed there in 1994 and again in June 2014: excellent stay both times. Both times I stayed in the "deluxe" room with the double bed (this time with a rollaway bed added) and en suite bath. Good value, vintage charm.
The good:
- clean
- very close to the Fiji Museum in Thurston Park, Albert Park (to catch a local rugby game), and the newly re-opened Grand Pacific Hotel (to see how the other half travels)
- nice shared kitchen facilities
- nice shared lounge area with TV and collection of dozens of donated "swords" (google "fijian sword" for more info)
- several electrical outlets in the Deluxe room

The other:
- 25 to 30 minute walk to "downtown" (handicraft market by the harbor, floating restaurant area)
- quite a few ants in the bathroom
- Solar (If any) hot water (during neither stay did I have any)
- you have to buy your own soap (but you can keep it!)

Room Tip: Go Deluxe!

Set on a leafy back street one block above Albert Park, the long running South Seas Private Hotel is a peculiar establishment. Austere, sleepy, more like a no frills boarding school than a hotel, it appears frozen in time. It is! The reception is behind bars. But the wooden hotel is clean, functional and well managed. In the evening guests hang out in the TV lounge which has sofas and overhead fans. The communal kitchen is functional with modern appliances, including four guest fridges. Some rooms and dorms still lack power outlets. Guests wander about, looking for somewhere to plug in their devices. Forget about the internet. Upstairs rooms facing the street can get very, very hot by late afternoon. There are many rooms to choose from so have a look before you accept. The owners are obsessive about rules and regulations, down to the tea towels in the kitchen but the staff are kind and keep the hardwood floors shiny. Quiet garden in the back has the only en-suite room in the house. Rates are below those posted. Budget. Memorable place. Bit of a walk to downtown Suva when it's blazing hot or raining but taxis are cheap.

I stayed 3nights in a door, the hotel is good looking but the common bathroom is only one toilet and one shower upstairs (which are locking with great difficulty!) and 2 downstairs but because we were real few in the hotel it was fine. The real problem is there is no electrical plug in the room and just one bathroom is having one, the staff is not allowed to charge anything behind the desk so I was supposed to use one plug at the entrance staying four hours near it for my camera to charge... Really annoying!! Cheap and clean place to stay but except the minimum!

The building is amazingly well-maintained for its age, and everything was spotlessly clean. We enjoyed walking into town and to the museum from this convenient location, and our room (#38) was very quiet, well-ventilated, and had a nice view of trees and shrubs. The bed was a bit hard. The front office charges a refundable deposit for items like towels and cutlery. They were out of soap, so we had to go outside to buy our own. Other than that, we were happy with our stay, and would stay here again. Its a good value, and left us more money for dining out.

I was only in Suva for one week and had to stay within a tight budget. I opted for a private room which gave me separate toilet and bath. The room was clean, sheets were changed daily, there was no aircon but the overhead fan worked fine though it could be hot closer to the summer season.
The Staff are friendly and willing to assist.
This is an old Hotel, wooden, with lots of character. Down side the steps up to reception are challenging especially with luggage and its the only way in.
I would echo Jayne n 's comments Suva is a difficult town with a dark side you need to be wary of.
Women should not go out at night unless escorted and men need to also stay alert.

Room Tip: Get a private room $FJ64 against 55 for the dorm.

We headed over to Suva to see what the capital had to offer and booked into the South Seas Private Hotel as it was the cheapest place we could find. We booked a double room for a couple of nights with a shared bathroom. The room itself was clean and tidy enough, but felt a little bit sparse. It might have been the narrow corridor leading to our room, or perhaps the design of the room itself, but we felt a little bit like we'd booked into a converted cell in a prison!! The whole place also felt a little dated and in need of modernisation.

Having a kitchen/dining area was a bit of a bonus and we saved money each night by eating in. The kitchen/dining area isn't that big and the facilities aren't all that, but they were adequate enough to put together an evening meal.

Location wise its ok. Close to the museum and Albert Park, but a bit of a trek into the town centre and back.

If you're on a tight budget like we were, and just want somewhere clean and tidy, then I'd recommend staying here. Beyond that though there's not a lot going for this place.
