I love coming to Malabo, and I stay at the Tropicana when I do. The rooms are basic, but they are impeccably clean and have what you need.
The Hilton is obviously gorgeous with its pool and flashy interior, but I can't help but find it impersonal, the food disappointing, and everything is just terribly over priced. It's also way too far away from the rest of the life of the city. My advice: Stay at the Tropicana and go sit b the Hilton pool on a sunny day!
The manager, Angela is, true to her name, an Angel. We had a mix-up with our payment and she was really flexible on when we paid, with what currency, etc even though we were already checking out. It was nice to feel the trust at an establishment like that. As we were two women traveling for work on our own Angela made sure to tell us how to safely choose taxis. She offered to take us in her own car if we ever felt uncomfortable with the transportation options. She felt like a long lost Aunt!
I'm a mediocre Spanish speaker, but the reception staff and I would always greet in Spanish and were happy to toss in some English words if I were confused about something.
The air conditioning units do vary in strength, but once you figure out the tricks (in my room I just had to leave them on extra long to cool everything off). I loved having a fridge in the room to keep water and food cool.
The restaurant food was pretty good! They make an effort with what ingredients are available on the day and the service is always good. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and the food is tasty and mostly in the range of 7,000 Cefas ($14). Which is kind of expensive, though typical of Malabo. The portion sizes are quite big though, so one can always share. Breakfast is buffet style and is nothing fancy, but they always have eggs, bread, cheeses, muffins, juice, coffee, and tea.
The Wifi system makes you log in again every time you lose or reinitiate the connection, so that is a little annoying. And the wifi does not reach the rooms - only works in the lobby. But we manage! And there is a new Chinese internet cafe steps from the hotel door so you can always get something important done online for $2 an hour if it's something urgent.
I give it a Very Good as far a Malabo hotels go!
