You should absolutely visit this museum during your stay in Sarajevo. When I was walking towards the building I at first thought it was closed or under repair, but I was wrong. There was a temporary exhibition about Football in Bosnia on the ground floor which didn't catch my interest too much so I went to the first floor where you can find the real jewels of this museum: an impressive exhibition about Bosnia/Sarajevo during WWI and one about the time during the Sarajevo siege. I've probably learned more about the dark past of Sarajevo during my visit than I could've learned by just reading a book. Very lively exhibitions with many exhibits and informative texts, showing history out of an unexpectedly neutral and objective perspective. I didn't have any time to visit the Tunnel Museum, but the visit of the Sarajevo History Museum was certainly very satisfying.

From outside it looks destroyed. From the empty entrance hall it seems inhabited. From the first floor expositions looks like its missing investors for someone with really good ideas. In the second floor you forget all the but's and find a wonderful WWI photo/material exposition and a stunning and tear provoking exposition about the siege of Sarajevo. Congratulations for what you've been doing with all financial difficulties. I recommend to anyone going to Sarajevo.

Well worth a visit, this museum tells you about the history of Sarajevo through three exhibitions, one dedicated to WWI and the other two concerning the siege of Sarajevo. The personal touches make it come to life and, despite its small size, it is gives a very interesting insight into both periods of history. The collection of photos downstairs showing areas of Sarajevo during and after the war was particularly interesting as we had explored the town a little so were able to recognise some places already.

Despite the closure of the National Museum of BiH, there are still many very good museums to visit in Sarajevo, and the Historical Museum is the best of them. Somewhat small and not exactly heated (so if you visit in the winter, it will be chilly), the museum contains two main exhibits upstairs, as well as one photo exhibit downstairs. All exhibits are captioned in both English and BCS. It's never crowded, so you can walk through at your own pace and spend as little (or as much) time as you wish. The upstairs exhibits include one permanent (or at least very long-term) display of artifacts related to the Siege of Sarajevo-- this is an incredible collection ranging from canned goods and MREs to uniforms to cigarettes traded as currency to schoolbooks used by children attending makeshift war schools. The Siege of Sarajevo collection alone is worth visiting for. There is also a nice illustration of the ICTY at the Hague. The other room upstairs houses more temporary exhibits-- the last time I was there, there was this really cool "Day in the Life" photo exhibit depicting people living their daily lives around the world on one given day. Downstairs, there is a small but exceptional photo exhibit showing landmarks around Sarajevo (e.g. the Holiday Inn, Marijin Dvor, etc.) photographed during the war and then after reconstruction. Really cool to see. Finally, there is now a small gift shop. If you are visiting Sarajevo for any length of time, the Historical Museum is a must-see.
