We went to see the City Hall/Library--having read the "Cellist of Sarajevo" it was a place I really wanted to see. It had been reopened and then closed with no explanation. Even with that, and even with the pouring rain and the raging river, near flood-stage, I was very moved to see the library. We even ended up being interviewed by a TV reporter doing a story on the closure of the library and how important it is to the city that the Library be open. I hope it is open again by now. It is a symbol of how Sarajevo persevered through a very difficult war--and how one musician inspired people all over the world.

Dear all,
This time I wish to bring to your attention this extraordinary beautiful historical and cultural site in Sarajevo. It is a City Hall built up during Austro-Hungarian rule of Bosnia in 19th century and used as a city hall. Later on, in its history the purpose of the building was changed and transformed into a National and University library. It is one of the landmark of Sarajevo. Unfortunately, during the war 1992-95 it was set on fire when more than a million cataloging units were burned down and the building itself was almost totally destroyed. Nowdays, after lots of effort, hard work and funds were invested by local community as well as a generous assistance of the EU and the government of Austria, this amazing monument is back to life. It will be opened for the public in May, but in particular on 28th June, special events will be organized on the occasion of 100th anniversary of the Sarajevo assassination which is considered to be one of the excuses to start the WWI. Everyone is welcome to Sarajevo in June to come and magnify the significance of this important event for the history of Europe and the world.
