Description: The Restaurant Hadjidraganovite Izbi that means "Hadjidraganov's Cellars" offers Bulgarian national cuisine on fire, on a hot plate and in an oven. Situated in the center of Sofia restaurant exposes unique atmosphere of an old cellar - all hand-maded. A band of one of the best Bulgarian folklore musicians is playing folklore music in the nights! Legend of Hadjidraganov's Cellars! "In 1866 a century ago Hadji Dragan, a trader of wool and silk lived in Sofia and four great houses built. Each with a style from different region of Bulgaria (Melnik, Koprivshtitza, Zheravna, Bansko). Now it's a famous restaurant "Hadjidraganov's Houses". In his famous cellars there was wine from vineyards all over the country. Only few were people entered into the Hadjidraganov's Cellars. While entering inside, silence, a smell of old barrels and a coolness met the special guests. Barrels ordered in long lines could be seen in twilight of kerosene lamps. Selected bottles lay in straw in wine racks." Now the Restaurant Hadjidraganov's Cellars welcomes you with it's traditional bulgarian food cooked on fire, hot plate and in an oven. You can choose a wine from different regions all over Bulgaria.

“rustic & charming”
Reviewed 17 June 2013

With many different rooms & levels this restaurant is full of fascinating surprises. The service is polite & efficient & the food tasty. The portions were ample & I'm glad we didn't order too much. A salad & meat skewer with beans was enough for the two of us. The meat was chicken, pork &lamb. It was beautifully presented & cooked nicely - tender & moist. The beer arrived with the top off & was a bit flat but definitely cold. The bottled water wasn't chilled but I didn't ask that it should be. All in all an interesting experience & from what we could see of other diners' meals, one that was popular.

“A Dragon's Lair?”
Reviewed 17 June 2013

Well, a dragon's lair is what I expected from the name, but alas, not quite. As a restaurant it is charming, the food is excellent, prices reasonable. It is not too touristy - yes, there are tourists, but there are locals too. The music seems authentic - played on accordion, a form of flute and a side drum. The walls and ceiling are festooned with all manner of dragonish paraphenalia, including chains that hang from the ceiling (for what purpose?), stuffed deer heads + antlers, various pots and pans, etc. The waiters didn't have much sense of humour, alas, so the dragonish jokes didn't work. Rather strangely, there are pointed notes in the menu to the effect that minimal service is included for free, but if you want extra service you should expect to pay for it. Quite what that service might be is left to the imagination. However, when we requested the bill, we were asked much additional service fee we would like to pay! Not having received (or requested) such services, we found that rather odd. In the end, we paid the bill separately - and left some coins on the table.

“Total disappointment!”
Reviewed 2 June 2013

The restaurant was a recommenation of the hotel staff and after reading all the (mostly positive) reviwes here on tripadvisor we though maybe we were in the wrong restaurant - but no: Address and photos definitely match - just not the descriptions!

On one night we wanted to have dinner around 8 p.m. and they were still wiping the floor and no guest was there so we decided to come back another day. No wiping then but the food was really a disappointment: The meat was extremely dry, side dished were a joke (the grilled potatoes were lukewarm at best), the beer was served warm (honestly!! don't they have a fridge??), the servings were small, service was below average (the "appetizer" bread was served after the main meals ...) and so on.

We came with four people (all around 30 years old and we are definitely no gourmets, just ordinary travelers) and we all unanimously agreed that the place was not worth a visit. We visited another restaurant (same price class, also bulgarian food) so we were able to make a good comparison between an excellent and a (at best) mediocre restaurant in the middle of Sofia.

“Good food and service”
Reviewed 30 May 2013

The summer garden is quite pleasant, the food was good, and the service nice! We had what the waiter recommended: mixed appetizer plate nod grilled meat. All was good: grilled meat was very tender.
