Owner description: Wonderful bookshop with a vast selection of English books, quirky gifts and a lovely place to browse - cool, stylish and right in the middle of Sofia - open 7 days 10:00 to 22:00....

The idea of the book shop is a great idea and I enjoyed visiting the shop. However, it would be great to see a wider range of books in English and, if possible, for there to be more books about Bulgaria in English .

Anyone who is pissed off with Amazon should support the local indie bookshop.
Elephant Books on Shishman Street in Sofia is a real find.
And a rarity in Sofia, smiling, friendly people...

Being in Sofia for a few months, a bookworm and English speaking, I was very keen to find a good English bookshop as soon as we arrived at the Radisson Blu. I went to two bookshops near the hotel, in an underground metro passage and in a gallery near an old style cafe but the selection of books in English was very limited. I thought the British Council would have a library and went there, on Doctors garden but was very disappointed when a receptionist told me that there was no library for a long time and didn't know if there was an English bookshop in Sofia, that was not very helpful, especially when I realised after by accident that there was a very good one and that it was the Elephant Bookstore, just behind the hotel where I was staying. One afternoon, walking in this narrow street, I happened to see a little window display with some books and some beautiful and very British tea pots. I stopped, entered in the shop and had the marvellous surprise to stumble in a wonderful bookshop full of very interesting and inexpensive books of any type, novels, biographies, history and my own favorite, traveling books. Since that day I go there often and buy each time two or three books, it became one of my favorite bookshop in the World, with Calignani in Paris and Kinokunyia in Dubai.

In keeping with an apparent tradition of independent Elephant Bookstores around the world, there's a brand new in Sofia. While there has been one in the town of Yablanitsa, for most of us (me and my friends live in Sofia), it is the first opportunity we have of checking it out. And we are very pleasantly surprised indeed. Not only is it at a nice location - the Tea House at Georgi Benkovski Str. 11, but also has an up-to-date website. Although situated in one small room, it is surprisingly well-stocked by making good use of the extremely high ceiling. But most important of all, its prices are very Bulgarian friendly, generally ranging from 1 to 4 euros...
