“Nice park area for your kids; the theater inside is well architected and has good acoustics”
Reviewed 15 May 2013

I suppose there are two parts to talk about: the theater itself is well made before the post-Soviet architecture "Stalin cakes" found elsewhere (such as NDK). Acoustics - perfect. Attention to detail on the walls, seats - perfect. You'd have as good a performance here as anywhere, with perhaps "Hall of Bulgaria" being the only better acoustic hall in Bulgaria.

However MOST people visit this area to bring their KIDS to the park. Walk around in the summer when the fountains are active and see the water spray, the statues, the (excellent) street musicians. This is close to Serdica metro, behind the Sheraton and once next to the former US Embassy (now Cervantes center for Spanish culture). Keep walking and you're near parliament and the President's house; a little farther still, and you're at the Opera House where MOST of the shows are moved to. This theater has more historical interest; it was built much earlier, but most of the shows I see there are OUTSIDE. Oh, and LOTS of movies are made in the nearby streets during the summer. Sofia has the delightful look of a Budapest without the Soviet destruction or dirty smoke, so it gets plenty of movies that wanted that "East Europe" turn of the 1900s look. (In as much as the rest of Europe was destroyed in the 1940s, but Sofia was "nearly" untouched). Ah well, that's my impression...

“Gorgeous”
Reviewed 28 April 2013

This theater is amazing. From the architecture to the artwork this is a top notch national theater. The best aspect of this theater is the facade the faces the central park in front of the old palace. Very beautiful and a place to sit with friends and have some great wine at one of the side cafes. Beautiful building, tons of culture, and great setting within the city.

“The center of culture in Sofia.”
Reviewed 22 April 2013

The national theater is situated in the middle of the city and is one of the best decorated structures in it. Just in front of it is a small but lively park completed with fountains, children's playground, cafes and a bench to sit down. This is the place where the old come to play chess and the young just have fun.
