Without a shadow of doubt this hotel is a Zagreb Landmark. When you come out of the station you cannot miss it; a beautiful and majestic building. It is in a quiet location and yet is only a short walk 10 minutes at the most to the lively nightlife areas of central Zagreb’s old and new towns. Right by the hotel and you would not notice it but between the Hotel and the railway stations is an underground shopping center.

If you like marble you will love this place. I understand it dates from the 1920s and it must have had a small fortune spent to bring it up to date. It is well presented and yet still offers that old world charm.

The rooms are well equipped and to a high standard with plenty of space and great bathrooms. A really good shower and a marvelous bath in which you can soak all your troubles away. House keeping is very good and the rooms were very clean. Only question I have about the rooms is that they have old style TV’s then again I never turned it on so who cares. It was quite cold outside touching -6c yet the room was well heated without being over hot.

The WiFi was free and very good; could do VOIP so free phone calls home. Other hotels could learn a lesson here.

Check in and out was very professional. Instead of a big front counter you are greeted by a lovely smile and sat down at a private desk. She could answer all my questions and made me feel very welcomed.

It is easy to see why this hotel is ranked number 1 in Zagreb. Not a lot else to say apart from I will be back and thank you for a great stay.

Having stayed at a number of other hotels in Zagreb I would say the Esplanade is certainly the best in town. it is more expensive but if you stay 4 nights or more there is a good discount on offer. The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and well equipped, very clean and excellent service. Breakfast is excellent but the main dining room for dinner is a place to entertain but not for a simple dinner. The Bistro is adequate enough for an evening meal but being located centrally it is easy to find another place to eat, and certainly more cheaply. Reception staff speak excellent English and are most helpful. This is a quality hotel and a great experience, sadly such places are disappearing in most of Europe.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the back of the hotel - sometimes it can be noisy with the trains in the ea...

Just came back from 3 nights in Zagreb. Snowing pretty hard when we arrived so Day one was a white out, but 2 days is enough to see the city anyway.
The hotel is pretty much I believe the best hotel in Zagreb, and is will located by the railway station. No noise whatsoever from the station, and the room was excellent, as the bathroom was luxurious with L'Occitane soaps and bubble bath, shampoo, much to the delight of Mrs Maz who nicked it. Well you have to really don't you!
OK, the Televisions aren't flat panel, but adequate. You don't actually stay in a hotel for the telly anyway, so I can't understand why so many other reviewers are making such a fuss. There is no CAT5 cabling at the hotel, and the management are waiting for that to happen (which is an enormous job) before installing new TV's. But they had movies, CNN, BBC etc. so that was ok.
The hotel bar is pretty good, and the two restaurants are very good. In fact, the food in Zagreb generally was very good, as is the local wine. There were a number of conferences going on in the hotel at the time, which didn't bother us.
One odd thing though is that outside the hotel when our car arrived it was deserted, and we had to struggle in with our own bags etc. OK, not a big thing, but generally with 5 star hotels there's usually a concierge waiting outside helping customers. When we came and went over the next few days it was the same. A little strange if you ask me!
Anyway, I doubt I'll go back to Zagreb... I've now ticked it off my list. But if I were to go back, it would be back to the Esplanade.

Recently spent 5 nites at the Hotel Zagreb while on business in Zagreb. I have also stayed at the Palace. The Esplanade is the nicer hotel, but is priced accordingly. It is not as magnificent as the photos imply, but it is certainly "the" hotel in Zagreb, and the movers and shakers will be there hosting events, conferences, parties, etc. The hotel is comfortably sized, has two well regarded restaurants (although I was not overwhelmed with the food at Le Bistro), with nice rooms. Nothing over the top, but all quite acceptable. The only downside is that it is located a bit away from the center of town (still only a 15 minute walk) - while quite close to the train station.

A truly amazing hotel – a living tribute to art deco and art noveau, whilst maintaining a high level of service and comfort.

The hotel is a short walk from Zagreb Glavni kolodvor (Central) railway station – not just a co-incidence, given that the hotel was built in 1925 as a way-station for passengers on the Orient Express. The foyer is truly spectacular, with art deco wall clocks displaying world times just like in those old films I watched as a lad on weekend television. We expected Hercule Poirot to come waddling in through the front door at any moment.

Check-in is done at individual desks with staff, rather than at a long counter – a nice human touch.

The rooms are lavishly appointed, again with enough authentic art deco to make the eyes water. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite the size of a small cottage, with a separate large bathroom, bath that was almost deep enough for a diving board, and separate loo.

Breakfast on the terrace, whilst a bit pricey, is an experience not to be missed. Certainly this tells you that you are in Europe. We also had dinner in the hotel restaurant, again distracted by art deco left and right.

No need to stick to the hotel all the time, though. The hotel is in a convenient location to central Zagreb, with many choices for restaurants and cafes handy.

There is an underground shopping mall nearby, with a supermarket, cafes, pharmacy, and assorted other shops. Generally there is no problem communicating in English, at least at a basic level – indeed, I found English more widespread in Croatia than in nearby Italy.

There is a tramline out the front of the hotel, although central Zagreb is small enough to walk about easily.

Housekeeping is rigourously spotless, and the gentleman who delivered breakfast (silver service trolley as standard) was always friendly and professional.

Wi fi is available to the room, and is included in the tariff.

Nothing was too much trouble. When a hotel staffer discovered that I was about to set off to the hotel from which we had fled to here (I had forgotten to return the key), he offered to drop the key in himself on his way home at no charge to us. Sure enough, the key was duly delivered. Truly amazing courtesy.

My wife and I cannot speak highly enough of this hotel. We travel considerably due to my wife’s work, and I can truly say that this hotel wins hands down in our travel experience.

We stayed in this hotel for a week over the holidays, and I struggle to find fault. The hotel itself is in grand Deco-style and is beautifully renovated, so there is a lot of glamour. We had a deluxe room which was very spacious and had an enormous beautiful bathroom with a large separate bathtub and across the room (the bathroom was large!) was a shower with a large rain shower head. There were marble finishes, plush towels and bathrobes and L'Occitane products. The bedroom had two tall windows facing the park and a pretty fountain. We were on the 5th floor and had no trouble with noise, even with the windows open. We did find the heating tricky: at first the room was too warm, but the staff adjusted it immediately (and offered us another room but we did not want to move) and also mentioned that the fifth floor can be warmer than the lower floors.
The restaurants were very very good. The breakfast buffet is comprehensive and what you will find in many 5-star hotels these days. However, we were delighted that you can also order from a menu at no extra charge. This meant we could have eggs to order, local breakfast specialties, good coffees.
Breakfast is served in Zinfandels restaurant, which is in a beautiful airy room with windows on the park and fountain. We had dinner there twice and the food was exceptional, as well as the service. There are interesting wines by the glass, creative elegantly-presented specials, and pleasant knowledgeable staff. The sommelier was especially good: helpful, knowledgeable and nice. The bistro downstairs was also very very good, and had a cheerful ambiance with sparkly lights and good service. It was the perfect spot for a light (or huge!) lunch or snack after a day out.
We found the location convenient: it is five minutes walk from the train station (you see the hotel across the park, grand and elegant, as you exit the station) and you are a few minutes walk from museums, major shopping streets, and good restaurants, all in the lower town.
The concierge magically found excellent seats to sold-out performances, and made last-minute reservations for other events with no trouble and no extra charges. When we checked out we were surprised and happy to see no unforeseen additional charges for anything during our stay.
Also, the housekeeping staff brought extra hangers immediately, and cleaned and completely re-stocked daily. There is turn-down service with cookies each day.
The hotel is rather quiet over the holidays, but filled up for several days during New Year, and there were large elegant parties in the hotel, and musical entertainment in the restaurant and bar.
There is a spa and gym/health club, but we did not use it. We had a look and it seemed nice and in line with the standards elsewhere in the hotel.
Very highly recommended for old-fashioned glamour and service, excellent food, and good location.

Room Tip: Our room was a deluxe, which may be worth the extra money as the bathroom was great. The 5th floor...

I've stayed in this hotel for 1 night, printed out the voucher of free room upgrade @tripadvisor, and was upgraded to a better room. The hotel is really very nice, room was very spacious, shower/bathroom as well. We took a taxi to the airport, asked at the hotel for them to call, it cost us 27e. would definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: Print the voucher from the tripadvisor :)
